  1. Right but if you're paying for projection and not past performance, and just using the past performance as a data point, Bumgarner's most recent year and the direction he's trending doesn't really make it appear that he's a step up from the percieved lesser pitchers.
  2. I'll take Mussolini on the mound over the namby-pamby high contact guy Crash was describing.
  3. I know the mystery team is a bunch of malarkey, but didn't the Twins turn out to be the Mystery team for Ohtani and Darvish? Maybe Boras gives out a "Mystery Team" punch card and after five times volunteering for the gig you get a 5% discount on your next 1st round draft pick?
  4. As long as it's not the White Sox.
  5. Maybe the Twins and Brewers can go in together on Cole. Negotiate some kind of shared custody thing and someone can shuttle him back and forth between Minneapolis and Milwaukee. If he's a good boy maybe once a month he gets to stop at the Wisconsin Dells?
  6. I'm kind of at the point where signing Bumgarner or Ryu would mostly be about showing good faith to the team and to the fans, which in itself might be worth it I suppose. Ryu looks talented but obviously there are injury scares but at this point I don't know that Bumgarner looks like much of a bet to be an upgrade from some of the lesser free agents. Bumgarner is clearly a big name still, but I don't know that these guys are really in a different pitching tier than Nolasco/Santana/Lynn were at the time of their signings. This crop will surely cost more, but as far as talent and prior years' production, they all seem to be in about the same class.
  7. Sure, not like Drysdale because he was a notorious head hunter. I'm not sure regularly intentionally beaning guys is really a qualification for the HOF though.
  8. I'd like to know if Falvey specifically mentioned those names, or if Park mentioned these guys and Falvey agreed they were possibilities. I wonder because I don't like that Graterol isn't included in that list.
  9. The left side of the Twins infield. If I'm paying good money, I want starting pitchers who can get outs all on their own. Which is why I'm starting to lean toward signing Rich Hill. Please everybody, don't kill me, I have a family!
  10. I heard GM tears are the first ingredient in World Series trophy polish.
  11. Zero. They went up to the 11th highest payroll when they extended him and we’re back to 24th two years later.
  12. Yeah, maybe if they give up Luis Severino too. Otherwise I’d rather just be satisfied to enjoy watching the Yankees pay the luxury tax for a bad pitcher.
  13. I would now offer Cole $245,000,000.99. It's really interesting though that Strasburg got the exact amount that was leaked the Yankees were willing to pay Cole. Surely it's just a coincidence that both pitchers have the same agent. It's almost as if someone wanted to tell the Yankees, "Ha, ha good one! Oh wait, you're serious?!?"
  14. Good to see Gardy beat the White Sox again.
  15. Yeah, so Cole will be getting 300M+? Unless the Dodgers are suddenly open to big money long term deals, I'd guess the Angels and Yankees will be the only likely pursuers, unless Philly just says screw it, money ain't a thang. My prediction will be that the Angels get him for 300M and we'll hear that the Yankees offered more, after which we will all hear them complain about how Cole just used them and we should all show pity.
  16. *****Moderator Note***** Please stay on topic, the article presented three specific free agent scenarios. Unsolicited economic lessons only serve to steer conversation away from this interesting case study.
  17. I'm not really high on any of the pitchers available, I guess I like Ryu a bit more than Bumgarner, but getting either would just feel like more of a moral victory to me. I might like option #2 actually, as I do want starters who can miss bats and both Hill and Smyly have a history of doing so. Aside from having a big name, I don't know that I'd buy into much if any performance upgrade from Bumgarner over Hill, at least in 2020. Of course that bat-missing caveat would make me want to stay away from Kintzler, can we swap him out for Betances instead? Oh, burying the lede clearly, Donaldson sure would be fun!
  18. It seems to me that performance incentives were something the Players Union opposed. I could be wrong, but I remember that discussion from quite some time ago. But that recollection would have been from the time when players got paid based more on what they had done in the past as opposed to what they were projected to do in the future. So yeah, I could see 36-year-old Greg Maddox and Bernie Williams wanting to keep the pay scales status quo.
  19. I'd like Strasburg, but since we've heard a plenty of rumors about Wheeler, Cole, Bumgarner and now Ryu, yet we haven't heard squat about Strasburg kind of makes me think him going back to Washington is all but a lock, but his side is waiting for Cole to sign so he can get his fair payday.
  20. IL stints for a starting pitcher don't bother me too much if you have enough starting pitching depth. I'm not sure the Twins have that at the moment, though I'm guessing by June lots of fans will be looking for any excuse to find starts for Graterol and/or Duran. Anyway, if it's only a three year deal it seems like a reasonable gamble. Ryu did get extended a qualifying offer last year and he did accept it. If could have been a situation where he gambled on himself and is eager to test free agency, but as others have noted, he may just be willing to sacrifice the security of a longer term deal to stay in an area he prefers. I'd guess if his preference is LA and he's willing to pull a repeat of last year, both the Angels and Dodgers would have no problem extending a 1 year deal to his liking.
  21. As much as I don’t like it, the player and agent would be doing themselves a disservice if they actually said no.
  22. It’s not about a good ending, it’s about a good beginning.
  23. Hendricks is actually the guy I have the least interest in. His inability to miss bats makes him the least likely to lead a championship rotation.
  24. With this team’s infield defense I would t be surprised if the team isn’t considering Keuchel at all.
  25. I guess that would depend on if you were thinking of early 30’s Maddox who was still elite or late 30’s Maddox who no longer was. I kind of forgot Pavano got turned into a bit of a punchline at the end, I didn’t mean to use him as a dig though. Until his final year he was solidly useful, just not the kind of difference maker the team needed.
