  1. I like it, basically the Twins paid $500K for the option to get first dibs on him next year.
  2. It's just a swing and he's an elite athlete. He can change it if he wants to, and if that's what's needed to be a productive MLB player, I'm sure he will want to. After his 2018 season I can see why he wouldn't want to mess with what was working. But swing changes seem to be an off season adjustment, so I'd guess if Lewis and the team saw his 2019 decline as swing related, we'll see some changes this spring.
  3. Even when the Twins were losing 90-100 games they signed bigger free agents than Romo. Nolasco, Lynn, Santana, Reed, Pineda, Castro, Cruz/Gonsalaz/Schoop last year. This happens most years, the Twins don't sign guys until right around Christmas and no one's happy (me included). With Wheeler (and the pie-in-the-sky names) gone Ryu and Donaldson are the only two free agents I have more than a passing interest in, but there are a lot of guys aside from those two that are bigger "names" than Romo and I'm sure there will be some signed.
  4. I doubt his fear of lutefisk can possibly top my fear of lutefisk.
  5. Ryu is easily my 4th favorite free agent pitcher this year and it's a sharp decline after that. I'm a bit worried that he's just waiting for the Dodgers to make him an offer though. You'd have to think the Twins would have to blow their offer out of the water to get him. He did take their QO last year after all, if a two year deal from the Dodgers beats a three year deal from the Twins I think this board might burn down.
  6. I do too, but sinker aside, it's hard to see the justification for the soft tossing Devin Smeltzer over a guy with better velocity and stuff in Dobnak.
  7. I read them, I just don't think defensive speculation is based on much more than drawing a line in the sand at Average. Anyone below Average is said to move positions, even though by definition, half of the league is below average at their positions. Not a big deal, I just think that the positional prognosticating is perhaps the least accurate part of the evaluation, since unless the player is absolutely brutal, he will likely be playing where the team needs him most.
  8. Location does seem to be either more of an issue with this year's crop of FA, or else this year's crop of FA are just more open about sharing that. I kind of think the business analogy actually supports the reason why free agents are less receptive to coming here though. United Health, 3M, Thrivent, all of Minnesota's proud Fortune 500 companies are at the top of their industries; they're the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers and Phillies of their contemporaries. As far as status goes, the Twins are the TCF Bank, trying to lure top guys that the US Bank Yankees also want. That doesn't even take into account any kind of location adjustment.
  9. Avisail Garcia just got 2/20M from the Brewers. With Ozuna and Castellanos still unsigned, this should be pretty encouraging news for anyone who had a mind to flip Eddie Rosario.
  10. Interesting that they have Jeffers sticking at catcher but Lewis and Kirilloff moving. I love the rankings, FG in particular, but I don't like the positional projections because in the end it's rarely about where the player is best at but instead where the team needs them most.
  11. Atlanta is far from one of my favorite cities, but lots of ballplayers are from the south. Even if they don't care for Atlanta, they can identify with it. And it seems most of them do care for Atlanta. It was a different era for sure, but the Twins were always able to bring back the local guys. Molitor, Winfield, Morris, Steinbach. It's really a separate discussion, but it sure wouldn't hurt to invest more in local HS and U of M baseball.
  12. Agree on all points. Kuechel needs a good infield defense, but if he has one he probably has a high floor though low ceiling. Biggest problem is he isn't a front line starter but will likely get paid like one, which would likely hinder the Twins from actually trading for one. Teheran - agreed, but I'm actually more concerned that his FB is down 2 MPH from just two years ago. Everyone is betting on upside with Teheran but I don't see much of a path to improvement for a guy with an 89 MPH fastball. Spot on with Thames - Because of his splits he might be a guy still sitting around in February, I might be interested then if there hasn't been any offensive additions. Now that I think about it, Thames with Sano/Garver spending time at 1B vs lefties doesn't sound like the worst thing. Not better than Donaldson or one of the Cubs corner bats though.
  13. Are you suggesting that the number of years doesn't matter? If AZ was his preferred destination the Twins should have just offered 6 because it would have made no more difference on their end as offering 4?
  14. I hope they do trade, but they better aim higher than Kluber, who looked pretty terrible when he pitched last year.
  15. Depressing article, but a good one. They got to start working on trades though, my biggest issue is that Falvey said they were concentrating on free agents first. Why unless they didn’t have a good read on these free agents and what they wanted? I agree that both of those variables are big issues for the Twins, I’m more troubled that the organization seems to prefer the status quo to rocking the boat. Like every other professional league MLB absolutely needs a salary cap and salary floor. All the small market Midwest teams should pushing for this.
  16. I’m not going to argue that the team should have signed Cole, but the team has the resources to spend $324M over 9 years, they can and they will spend 4x that amount. The debate would only be about whether it’s wise to commit 25% of their payroll (by the end of the deal should be 20%ish due to inflation). It’s probably not a great idea, but I think it’s fair for some posters to ask for a different strategy than the quantity over quality free agent approach we’ve always seen.
  17. It's going to turn into a limited no trade clause where he gets to choose half the league to avoid, but considering the Twins are obviously chasing pitching, a contender and tried hard to get him when he was a free agent, Minnesota will probably the the first team on that list. Maybe the Cubs can convince him to go by dumping everyone around him and make it clear they are rebuilding. But I suppose if he just really likes Chicago, that may not matter either. Also, he'll have the leverage to pick where he goes even if the Cubs have to accept a lesser offer.
  18. Pfffft, Rich Hill, who said anything about Rich Hill? I said I wanted uh...Mitch...uh...ill, that's it I said I wanted Mitchell, Kevin Mitchell ever heard of him?! NL MVP!!
  19. Love this signing. And I like the Bumgarner and the Dodgers mutual interest rumor too. Because my guy is Rich Hill and Rich Hill said he's most interested in pitching for the Dodgers or Red Sox, so I hope those cities end up with no room left at the inn.
  20. Well I want some action, and if the rotation doesn't improve I'm not going to be happy, but I don't want to counter the Yankees adding a stud with 2nd level pitchers. This team has tried that most of the last decade.
  21. It seems like Dodger fans are even more angry than Twins fans. Well, anger per capita is probably equal, but there's way more Dodger fans, so their gross anger is certainly higher. I hope we beat them to the Bargaining stage though because I really want to start making some trades without the Dodgers bidding us up.
  22. Well I don't want MadBum at all, so does that mean I'm in the Bargaining or Acceptance stage?
  23. He's definitely the guy I like the best of the next tier. I'd really like the team to explore trades first though, because my willingness to pay Ryu would really hinge on the quality of pitcher the Twins are (or aren't) able to trade for. I mean, sure, I do 4/100M if desperate. Let's go see if desperation is actually required though. I’d hate to find out later that the price of getting a #1 starter was either giving Ryu an extra year or giving up Royce Lewis only it’s now too late to give Ryu that extra year.
  24. Why would they do this? They know the pizza guy will deliver right to the room right?
  25. My father spent some time in Korea for some educational cultural enrichment thing, I forget the details, but you can be sure I still got LG Twins cap! Not sure why it's pink though.
