Trade Deadline: GM For A Day
nicksaviking replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
So the Pirates almost (or maybe still will) traded Tyler Anderson to the Phillies for two A ball players, though they put up good numbers. Seems like he'd be a reasonable comp to Pineda. I'm not saying the Twins should jump in and swap out Anderson for Pineda, but I'd guess this is a similar return we should be expecting. That's probably what I'd want to. Pineda couldn't bring back any intriguing pitching in AAA like Cruz did; they might be able to get another Smetlzer/Ober/Jax/Sands type, but we already have enough of those on the 40-man. If the Twins are going to get any more ready-to-roll prospects, I'd want them to be the higher upside guys that the bigger name trade chips might bring back.- 66 replies

Trade Candidate Profile: Max Kepler
nicksaviking replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Everybody thinks they want a glove first player at the key positions. But after a month the whole state is calling for Andrelton Simmons, Pedro Florimon, Carlos Gomez, Rich Becker, Nick Punto, Aaron Hicks, Jason Castro, Drew Butera, Pat Mears and Jeff Reboulet's* heads. *I've been waiting awhile to find a good time to make a good Jeff Reboulet referrence. -
I really need to know what Buxton’s camp countered with before choosing sides. In any case, I don’t think this situation is set in stone yet as I don’t see any team giving the Twins a deal based on his potential at this time. I’d guess he won’t be moved until this off-season at the earliest. Though, one “star” player probably makes ownership see dollar signs more than a team full of decent players. One way or another, if push comes to shove, I’m not convinced the current group in charge will be the ones making the call when the Buxton resolution is concluded.

Was I complaining? It was an observation. Did you not read the first paragraph where I asked for them to be inserted into the rotation ASAP?

Sad to see Cruz go. I'm interested in the two pitchers though. I'd stick them in the rotation ahead of Ober, Jax and Sand right now. Or at least as soon as the Olympics are over. The Twins need to start finding some power arms for the rotation ASAP. I little odd that the Twins are the sellers and they're the team taking on two guys requiring 40-man-spots though.

I really don't know enough about Megill, but Duffey, as a starter, still only had two pitches, a curveball and a poor fastball which topped out at about 90MPH. Looking at it a bit removed from those years now, Ryan and Molitor were absolutely insane giving Duffey 36 starts. MeGill looks to throw quite a bit harder and has a FB/Slider/Change. He's clearly more starter-ready.

Maybe the Twins Have a Spending Problem?
nicksaviking replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sure, but the leverage means nothing if the player calls your bluff, and calling the team's bluff gets the player to free agency where they can wield that leverage you refer to. There's no rule that the Twins have to follow the arbitrary pay structures. What Buxton and Berrios are asking for pretty much sounds exactly what the players union has been calling out the owners for, for decades. Young players are NOT getting their fair share. The new CBA is coming up, I absolutely could easily see the union pressuring B&B to take a hard stance while the owners are pushing the Twins to keep the status quo. I mean, other clubs with young stars soon to find themselves in the same spot want more Ronald Acuna action, not precedent breaking moves in the players favor. The Twins should absolutely not be beholden to the other organizations since those teams will be the one's benefiting while the Twins are left (once again) holding the bag. But covert collusion is nothing new to MLB baseball owners.- 60 replies

Maybe the Twins Have a Spending Problem?
nicksaviking replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My point was the Twins are doing fine developing offensive players in a timely fashion. They are not developing pitchers in a timely fashion. In fact, they are not developing starters in any fashion.- 60 replies

Well the problem there is quite obvious once you notice it. You listed 10 players but only 1 is a pitcher.- 60 replies

Maybe the Twins Have a Spending Problem?
nicksaviking replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins signed Donaldson. They tried to sign Wheeler and Darvish. Makes no sense that they can't pay Berrios and Buxton. I'm failing to understand why you can offer big money deals to players who didn't play for the Twins last year, but when it comes to your own players of the same caliber, you need to stick to your guns and insist on getting a still-in-arbitration discount. If I didn't know any better, I might suspect they are dealing with these players in a way so as not to upset the rest of the league by letting the players set a precedent for how teams need to deal with arbitration-eligible star players.- 60 replies

Buxton and Berrios Extensions Becoming Murky
nicksaviking replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If Berrios was a free agent, the Twins almost surely would offer $20M per year; they reportedly offered that to Darvish and Wheeler. If they want him, they need to take a deep breath, accept that they aren’t getting the still-in-arbitration deal nearly every other young pitcher takes, and get over it. This is Minnesota, we’ve got decades of experience to know that we don’t get off easy trying to keep our players. Accept it, live with it and deal with it. Or you know, dwell on it, be spiteful about the bad break and keep on not winning championships.- 32 replies

I'm sure we'll never know much more. This is probably not all that big of a deal, but even if it was, the team would downplay it. Maybe Donaldson was upset that Arraez wasn't paying attention, or maybe he was upset that Arraez wasn't trying to steal signs for him. I'm ready for a new manager, but in this case it seems like Watkins was the right guy for the job anyway. Part of the reason he was hired was that he is bilingual. I'd guess this situation was likely implicitly listed as one of his job duties long ago.

Week in Review: Short and Sour
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Whatever it is, I hope it's nowhere near Minnesota's radar. This team can replace the manager without doing a complete 180. Meintkiewicz seems like going backwards to the Gardy/Ryan kind of team building. -
Twins Prospect Retrospective: LHP Charlie Barnes
nicksaviking replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I'm glad the Twins are starting to bring up the prospects, and I'm thrilled for Barnes. However, I'm still twiddling my thumbs waiting for the guys who might miss a bunch of bats though. High contact pitchers and lots of sinkers don't really get my juices flowing too much.- 29 replies

The Twins (Still) Have a Velocity Problem
nicksaviking replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Right, but those pitchers are homegrown somewhere, just never in Minnesota for some reason. We need the homegrown top end starting pitchers. Not just because of the money, but because by the time they hit free agency, most of the top end starting pitchers have already peaked. -
Baddoo would have been behind Kirilloff, Larnach, Rooker and Celestino. His last stop before injury and COVID was Ft. Myers; even Aaron Whitefiled was in AA prior to the shut down. There's next to no chance he'd be anywhere outside of Wichita right now if Detroit hadn't selected him. Call me crazy, but I'm happy for him.

2021 MLB Draft Day 3 Thread
nicksaviking replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Nice quote! But I counted 34 HS players taken in rounds 3-10 and 51 taken on day 3. They may not have excited the Twins terribly much, but there were plenty available to draft, and you'd think most if not all of the guys taken prior to round 10 were signable. Surely many of the early drafted day 3 guys will be too. I kind of think with this being a crazy past year or so, the Twins likely just decided to do their scouting in the more accessible places. After the first two picks, the players chosen were almost exclusively from the big time programs and/or cities. The JUCO guy they picked in round 19 looks like the only one that would be considered "off the beaten path". -

nicksaviking replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Wow, and only one was a HS pitcher. Well, like the Twins, that's another club that is terrible at developing pitchers. Have to give them a hand for throwing everything at the wall to see what (if anything) will stick. Not that I wanted the Twins to do that. -

nicksaviking replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I could be mistaken, but don't they usually send even the seasoned college arms to the Rookie Leagues? Seems like a couple of guys who were known for their command, like Cole Sands, were sent to A ball. I'm trying to recall others, but it would be nice to see some of these guys move up. -

nicksaviking replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Which is fine, but doesn't exactly lead to a quick call up. If anyone was hoping for a fast rising college arm to debut in a couple of years, that's probably not happening if they aren't going to pitch again until next summer. Though considering Ober was drafted in 2017 and he's the first pitcher the current front office drafted and got to the majors, I suppose hoping for a 2-3 year turn time was probably already unreasonable. -
The Twins (Still) Have a Velocity Problem
nicksaviking replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
That's certainly true, but other teams are doing one of two things that the Twins seem unable to do. They are either taking their Jorge Alcalas and improving their command, or they are finding guys who have ++velocity but still have enough command to be a good pitcher. -
The Twins (Still) Have a Velocity Problem
nicksaviking replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Those pitchers are hard to find, but for some reason it's harder for the Twins; most other teams aren't year in and year out struggling with this. It seems pretty unlikely that there's no correlation between the fact that the Twins have only called up two usable starting pitchers in the last 15 years and the fact that the Twins also struggle to develop velocity. -

I might be missing the strategy, but I struggle to understand why you wouldn't grab that guy in round 11, maybe 12 if that's what a team intended to do. -

I'm kind of bummed they weren't saving some of their pool to try to grab another HS athlete.
