  1. How do you know he didn't try? I think he did, but those he wanted he just couldn't sign. I know, I know, I'm naive.
  2. I was disappointed to see Vargas get sent down. I was looking forward to a Twins lineup with Sano, Park, Vargas, Dozier and Plouffe lumber in it...
  3. I'm still hoping they trade Nolasco, for "cash considerations". That's trade talk for "We'll give him to you and pay half his salary" At least then the Twins would open up a roster spot, and reduce their payroll (at least a little).
  4. Your analysis includes luck. I don't believe in luck. Luck is the opiate of the unbeliever. if you believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you don't need luck. The rest of your analysis appears to be valid. And I think you are correct with 'C' - his results will improve if he stops using the split finger fastball. 'A' does not appear to be true – at least right now – even if you believe in luck (which I don't). If he were 'lucky' he would be on a team that doesn't have five better starting pitchers...
  5. Plus Nunez is doing well at the plate. Santana is not so much.
  6. Never say never. It would rarely happen. Nishioka walked out on the last year of his contract, leaving money on the Twins' table.
  7. This discussion is part of a larger discussion of the 40-man roster. If the Twins bring Abad and/or Sweeney (or Quentin, or one of the other non-roster invitees) north with them, they will need a roster spot for each one brought up. I really think Santana is in danger of losing his roster spot - by being put on waivers. He did not have a good year last year. He's not hitting - or fielding – particularly well this spring. He needs more AAA time. If they tried to pass him through waivers, he might make it, despite his versatility, especially if they wait until the last day of roster decisions to do it; other teams will have their own excess roster baggage to notice. Polanco would be my choice for his back-up spot – he can play either 2B or SS. That would make the bench Arcia, Polanco, Nunez and CA Ryan. I see Sweeney as the Twins' 'Plan B' for CF (behind Buxton, if Buxton needs more AAA time).
  8. * Spring Training stats are much more difficult to come by, so these stats are based on what Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press has reported on Twitter. Actually, spring training stats are on the Twins official website. Push Stats.
  9. I actually think the author, Mike Bates, has a valid point. If you consider spring training at all to this point, Sweeney has a .333 batting average and .500 OBP. Plus he can – and has - played center field (I don't know how well). He has played more right field. Just thinking out loud – I think the Twins might just bring him north to be a late-inning defensive replacement for Sano. He at least has some pop in his bat. I have nothing against Danny Santana, but if his spring training numbers don't improve at the plate, the Twins may put him through waivers. Sweeney and Arcia, would be left-handed options off the bench. But Arcia will also be on a short leash.
  10. No sarcasm there, is there? Seriously, the Twins do have three really good rookie candidates. I think Kepler will have to wait (for ROY consideration) until 2017. Too much competition for outfield playing time for him.
  11. Sano might be the one headed for some regression, but I hope I'm wrong. I think he needs more protection in the lineup than Plouffe. Park – if he hits well – would be a good choice. But so would Mauer. I actually like the Twins' lineup this year – underrated, balanced and yet potent.
  12. I reached your conclusion a long time ago. I don't believe in luck. Luck is the opiate of the unbeliever. If you believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you don't need luck. The Twins – as every team – will succeed or fail based on their health, abilities, coaching, strategies and wisdom in playing the game, And by God's grace. Much the same as in life.
  13. I agree. Molitor was quoted as saying that barring injury, or a real bad spring, Duffey will make the starting lineup. I see Santana getting the nod followed by Gibson, Hughes, Duffey and Milone. Berrios might get the nod over Milone. For me, Nolasco needs to be nearly perfect to break the starting five. May will be in the pen.
  14. I disagree. Mastro and Benson won't be here, because Buxton will. Santana and Arcia will get some time in the outfield, but primarily it will be Rosario in left, Buxton in center, and Sano in right. And yes, the Twins will be an exciting team this year, especially with Buxton, Sano, and Park.
  15. To me, it's amazing the Twins are so accomplished at raising up CF. Think about it: Ben Revere, Denard Span. Carlos Gomez, Aaron Hicks and Byron Buxton could all be playing major league center field some day this summer, for five different teams. Yes, Gomez came over from the Mets – but he was a minor leaguer at the time. They all emerged from the Twins' farm system.
  16. Sunday will be the 10th anniversary of the death of Kirby Puckett, one of the most beloved Twins of all time. I just thought it would be nice to offer some memories of Puckett as a Twin – from his infectious smile to his game-winning 1991 World Series Game 6 home run. What's your favorite memory of Kirby Puckett?
  17. Don't underestimate Rosario. I really think he could be a 20 homer guy!!!
  18. Ok, but I question how much 'cluster luck' is actually 'luck'. Is a manager's lineup worth nothing? Are coaches' encouragements, tips and helps valueless? Is a player's hard work meaningless? The lineup card could have some impact on offensive 'cluster luck'. Knowing where to put defenders on a field could have some impact on defensive 'cluster luck'. If my premise holds true, then Molitor had a really good year. And the Twins could over achieve again next year.
  19. Great read, Seth. I think you are right on, and I hope you're right and Duffey makes the rotation. Someone on the starting staff will falter in the first month allowing for Berrios to be brought up. I really like where the Twins have gone, even this offseason – getting Park, Murphy and Hicks, and just having confidence that their younger players will succeed. GO TWINS!!
  20. Two of the three projections have the Twins in last place in the AL Central, with losing records. Maybe I'm naive, but I just don't see that from this team. I expect the Twins to come in in second place behind the Royals, and into the playoffs. That is, unless: • They start Nolasco for more thsn a third of the season; or • They FAIL to start Duffey and Berrios for more than half the season; or • They trade for Mike Pelfrey and start him.
  21. I believe Rogers, Meyers and Burki will all make significant positive impacts on the Twins relief corps in 2016. Maybe not at the start of April, but one or two will be up by the start of June. The bullpen will be OK – perhaps middle of the league. But it should be good enough to reach the playoffs. I'm excited. Think about this for power: Vargas at 1B; Dozier at 2B, Escobar at SS; Plouffe at 3B; Rosario in LF, Kepler in CF, Sano in RF; Murphy at CA and Park at DH. Double-digit power threats from eight of nine positions, and 20+ homer threats from six positions. Granted, Buxton and Mauer are on the bench, but it could happen in 2016. (I know, I know, that's not what this thread is all about). But this power could make up for some of the shortcomings of the relief corps. Just a thought.
  22. So you would take Berrios over proven commodities (at least last year) like Milone and Duffey? I think Milone and Duffey should have every chance to prove themselves at the ML level, with what they did last year. I just hope Nolasco is not part of the mix, at this point. By May, it will be seen if one of our pitchers is injured and/or ineffective. Then Berrios will come up.
  23. I agree with your list, Cody, except for 1B. I believe Park will actually be a better defensive 1B than Mauer. Just based on reports I've heard about him – he won the equivalent of the gold glove award at 1B in the KBO from 2012-2014.
  24. I don't see Arcia in CF. He struggles in the corners. In response to REPETE, I don't see Plouffe getting traded before 2017. Santana and Arcia, barring injury, will both be with the squad in April. Both will be back-ups.
