  1. That would mean a #2 would cost the Twins somewhere between $30-55 million, depending on the length of the deal. Knowing that Willingham for 3 years @ $21 million is the largest FA contract the Twins have even given out.....do we really think the Twins will ante up for that type of contract? I would say the answer is definitely NO. I think they will do what they always do. Sign a couple of semi-washed veterans on the cheap and cross their fingers. And we all know what the end result will be....
  2. The Genius of Bill Smith. That extension made no sense at the time, and, obviously, looks even worse now. No other organization in baseball would have overvalued Blackey the way the Twins did. Where are all the Blackey apologists now?
  3. I don't think we should have been all that surprised to be 11-25.
  4. Where to start...? 1. Poor draft choices 2. The talent drain due to Bill Smith getting fleeced on every deal he made. 3. Overall organization philosophy is flawed...ie, pitch to contact..etc 4. Overvaluing their current and past players 5. Underachieving FO and scouting department...consistently missing on player evaluations 6. Inability to develop prospects To name a few...
  5. I don't think enough has been made about just how badly Bill Smith got worked in that negotiation. Mauer was never going to go anywhere else...he could never handle the pressures of a big market. No chance. It's called a Hometown Premium... It's his right to get the best deal possible for himself, but it's also his legacy. He makes 24% of the teams payroll, and he just doesn't produce very much. Hindsight is 20/20 but, he just isn't worth anything close to 23 mil per year. How could anyone possibly disagree with that? He's the poster boy for an organization that has made countless blunders, big and small, in recent years....and he's the face of a franchise that will probably lose 90-110 games in the next several years. Is that his legacy? I'll gladly eat all my words if he can put MVP type numbers going forward. Afterall, he IS getting paid like one...
  6. Good luck with that....
  7. I'm certainly not a fan of Capps, but he has pitch well to this point. I'm hoping he continues to pitch well enough to attract interest from other teams. Although I highly doubt other teams will overvalue him the way the Twins have....
  8. That is one sorry lineup
  9. More than 3,000 AB's over 9 seasons in the minors with a career line of .260/.316/.440..... is nothing to be excited about.
  10. Don't get your hopes up.
  11. That's an interesting perspective. I would much rather have the 'tell like it is' approach, as opossed to being spoon fed mindless positivity that we got here so often. It's frustrating to talk Twins with some friends who want to hear that things will turn around and the Twins will be competetive again in no time. Not wanting to hear that the Twins have little talent, very few good prospects, and that management has made countless blunders both large and small, that have all contibuted to where they are now. Even the Twins themselves have been somewhat full of themselves and pretty quick to pat themselves on the back for all of their success. A self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts...
  12. He's the anti-Kirby Pucket, and you know it. There's a reason he's called Clueless Joe. It's been pretty well documented, in the papers, on the radio, etc... that those qualities are not part of his offering. He's the quiet, nice boy next door. Lesser players were left to explain the teams struggles last year. Joe was nowhere to be found, and couldn't figure out what all the fuss was about. Yep, someone else would have paid Mauer, and the Twins(in hindsight) would be better off. The thing is, knowing how he is, and how he handles the press...there is no way he could hack it NY, or Boston, or Chicago, or Philly. Think what they would have done to him if he was in NY last year....
  13. You need to get your mind around just how overpaid he really is. He's transitioning away from playing catcher. A high average, no power first baseman or DH isn't worth 23 mil per year. Not even close. His numbers in 2010 were good, but not elite. He's being paid like an elite player, but he doesn't produce like one. If the Yanks or Boston or one of the other big market clubs makes this deal, it's easier for them to absorb the contract if it doesn't work out. The fact that it's the Twins that signed this deal(24% of their payroll), compounds just how bad this contract really is. He's untradeable He playing less and less catcher His power isn't developing, it's diminishing To a lesser degree, he has practically zero leadership qualities. There is only 1 way for the Twins to get value from this contract...and that's for Mauer to produce like 09, and continue to play catcher as long as possible. Does anyone really think that's going to happen?
  14. You gotta love that Hometown Premium!
  15. Apparantely, Slama doesn't quite fit the cute little cookie mold that all Twins players need to fit.
  16. We don't have to wait a couple of years to call this one of the worst contracts ever.
  17. Come on Seth. He was never a top flight prospect to begin with, so we shouldn't be surprised by his struggles. The guys has no range and does only 1 thing well....hit left handed pitching. He's not a Major League starting third baseman. He was overhyped from the start, just like Parmelee, Revere, Hendricks, etc....Hopefully Dozier breaks the mold and outperforms.
  18. We shouldn't be surprised by his struggles. His minor league track record was never anything to be excited about. Unfortunately, he's just an ordinary middle of the road prospect who probably won't hit well enough to play first base in the Majors. I hope I'm wrong...
  19. If Parmalee is our 1B of the future..that's not a comforting thought.
  20. Agreed. That is one stupid comment....and I'm not a Ryan fan.
  21. Valencia?? In order to aqcuire talent, you have to give up talent. Valencia doesn't qualify.
  22. The mega-million man is the Anti-Savior.
  23. Ha. That is such a worthless point. That team was destined to lose 99 games, with or without Cuddy. There were holes all over the field...obviously. He seemed to be the one guy who believed in accountability.
  24. My guess is he will struggle in the field and struggle at the plate, like most any rookie would. He's far from a sure thing.
