  1. People in Minnesota have a tendency to rate the quality of an evaluator by whether or not he says nice things about our people, players, organizations, or programs. It's pretty funny and somewhat obviously reflects an inferiority complex. My biggest concern of the Vargas front Sunday was that he thought he hit the ball a lot farther than he did (it was only off the wall after a bounce or bounces). The carry at Target Field is quite different, and it's intimidated more than one player. It's also the reason why Vargas was almost thrown out. He didn't really run after hitting it. He jogged to first and then picked it up. I'm not sure they showed that on TV.
  2. This is non-news. He's not getting demoted in anything other than paperwork. He'll get "promoted" when it's his turn to start again, which will be after the rest of the rotation have made their starts after the all-star break. It sucks for him, though, wrt pay.
  3. You question Santana because of previous reports on his defense , but you let Nunez slide by on that, saying with work it can be acceptable? Huh?
  4. My hope when Arcia was rehabbing was that the Twins would see his strikeout rate was far too high even at AAA and keep him there with the mission that he needed to figure that part out prior to coming back to the Twins. That's still what I would do (demote him). Unfortunately, the Twins don't have any OFers to bring up, except Hicks, who also needs to figure things out at AAA. It's probably time to give Mauer an outfielder's glove and consider giving Vargas, already on the 40, a chance as DH and backup 1B for a while. Arcia and Hicks need to spend their time through July down on the farm with specific goals in mind. Arcia can obviously destroy pitching there, but apparently he can't not strikeout a lot there. Fix that and come back.
  5. LOL. Now we're cherry-picking statistical practices. This method and any others you find convenient, by the way, are the reason people ignore good statistical analysis. I've read on and see that you've backtracked a bit. The reality is that you could have a reason for potentially ignoring any games. Which of the hypothesized reasons might actually be valid are probably unknown. Personally, I would ignore all of our pitchers' stats against Miguel Cabrera and Mike Trout, since the rest of the league is not represented by them. Jared Burton was awful early on, then settled into plain bad. The awful parts are very much in line with the rest of Burton's year. I mean, you can't load the bases and give up grand slams every outing, so doing so isn't so much an "outlier" as it is pretty much the maximum damage a reliever can incur, and the one's most likely to have this happen are those relievers with Burton-like stats (sure, exclude the worst when determining this).
  6. Older players rarely matter at all. Who are the 17 yr olds holding their own?
  7. Bravo. I thought I was the only one who thought the Twins decision-making has basically been clownish the whole Ryan era, in spite of an award or two and the respect he seems to command. And Gardenhire is maybe worse...another Ryan failure. There's some good early minors' scouting in the the history of Ryan's tenure, but that's really the highlight. A few good moves (Nathan/Liriano, Meyer, and maybe Stewart) pale in comparison to the bad ones and maybe more so, the ones that weren't made when the team had the nucleus to win it all.
  8. Good piece, Nick, well said. Twins mgmt on and off field is clownish. That's my take, but people need "foot in the door" articles, I suppose, more than my "door in the face" comments. But somehow Twins fans need to see just how poor the decision-making is at Target Field. I want to disagree with one word you use, and while it might sound nitpicky, I personally think it's a big deal. You say about Kubel/Parmelee: In fairness, that move didn't work out too badly, as Parmelee slipped through waivers. I want to point out that "in fairness" this is the sentence that doesn't fit. Fairness is not the same as hindsight, and in fact it may just be the opposite. Ryan/Antony did not know or probably believe that Parmelee would make it through waivers, and Parmelee was probably a miss by more than a few teams. Judging actions in hindsight is, hopefully obviously, flawed and leads to more and expanded poor decision-making. In fairness the article you write is right on. In hindsight the Twins got lucky with Parmelee.* *This commenter believes Parmelee is likely never a big enough deal to warrant (in hindsight) this strong of reaction, but at this point, there's still a chance he could be an important part of this team 2-3 years from now...when it matters. Not so for Kubel, whose 2014 numbers thus far are rather mediocre, btw.
  9. Sorry, didn't read all the comments. The shortstops mentioned are all flawed and likely very costly. Lowrie is the Todd Walker of shortstops: no range yet the current metrics don't kill him. Everything he does offensively he gives up on defense. If Florimon hadn't been picked up by the Twins, he'd be floating in AAA. There are a lot of actual major league shortstops that could cover until the Twins figure it out. Think of guys like Nick Punto (only not actually Nick Punto). They can be had cheaply, they're good on defense, and they hit better than Florimon. It could be a really long time until the Twins develop a real shortstop. Santana probably isn't it, and Niko Goodrum is also unlikely, though he's interesting. Polanco will be a 2B. It seems there have been numerous high school shortstops available in the draft that are succeeding. Should the Twins select Nick Gordon? I've been following N.C. State's Trea Turner all season, and I'm not a fan anymore.
  10. It's possible he could be a SS, but every remark I've read by evaluators is that his arm and range aren't there. His errors are a result of his relative inability to get in proper position to field the ball, often followed by a hurried throw from an arm that can't make up for his range deficiency. That's a paraphrasing of all I've read and heard. I think the Twins are trying to determine if he can make the proper improvements fielding the ball. If so, the throwing errors should decline. I haven't yet heard anybody say that it looks like he could stick.
  11. Sorry, Seth, if they're going to wait until June, they're going to wait until mid to late June. Super 2 isn't safely escaped from until the summer solstice!
  12. I always love it when people forget who is managing.
  13. Except in the bullpen he could pitch in low-leverage situations. Meanwhile the Twins are pitching Samuel Deduno 2-4 innings in games that are basically lost.
  14. The only reason the Twins should EVER bunt is 1. traditional bunting situation, and 2. Florimon is up, and pinch-hitting isn't an option (e.g. the stud hitter who would win the game for you is your back-up catcher). But, of course, bunting would even be stupid if Florimon were even a AAA light-hitter. He's not. His defense is okay, but it can be replaced. His bat can be replaced by me, and I can't even hitting a 90 mph batting cage ball.
  15. Yes, it's not like a guy can hit well over a 10-day stretch or that this particular guy is old for his league. ;-)
  16. First, Kubel did not turn down a major league offer to sign a minor league offer with the Twins. Show me one player who has done that, and I'll show the most absolute exception to the rule to ever exist. Second, when the Twins signed Kubel, I think I was the only one screaming then. What's happening now (if it does) was totally predictable. Kubel could do nothing but hurt the Twins. We'll have to see whether the management is simply the worst ever or merely just horrible. Enough hyperbole for everyone? :-)
  17. This is a depth the Twins haven't seen for quite a while. Unfortunately, it's very low-quality depth, but the first step is to have a choice, so that's progress. My biggest fears with this team are 1) Gardenhire has input into the decisions, 2) getting fooled by young hitters hitting in spring training, and 3) Chris Parmelee not getting a proper chance. I'm not suggesting Parmelee's anything, really, but I'm afraid this is the year where he would prove if he's a legit MLBer and the Twins won't give him a proper chance to show it. This is a lost year, and if the Twins have a player there, they need to keep/use him as an asset. The whole world knows who Jason Kubel is, and that is...a minor league contract. Keeping Kubel cannot lead to anything positive for the Twins.
  18. Trea Turner looks to stay at shortstop. I would be shocked if the Twins passed on him. Having trouble remembering the last top ten college middle infielder to succeed, though (or to even be top ten drafted).
  19. First, it's really, really sad when you're constantly cheering against your GM's rumored moves. Second, Bonnes, my friend, stop with the "money to burn" thing. All money matters. Just because there is money to spend doesn't mean it doesn't hurt you to spend it unwisely. There are future considerations with every dollar committed.
  20. Well, Terry Ryan, for one, would do something like this from the other side (unfortunately) and Bill Smith would have given up more. So maybe you need to correct your statement about GMs to exclude ours. Lucky us.
  21. Check out his stats versus teams other than the Twins. They're not good, as the Twins were 20% of his starts.
  22. Hrbek, but only because we really only got a 4.5 year good (great!) stretch from Morneau. Morneau should have been better than Hrbek, and I have only a little doubt he would have been. Morneau at his best was an average defensive 1B, Hrbek was the best in the game (with Mattingly and Hernandez). Hrbek played in more of a pitcher's era than Morneau's good years.
  23. Larsen is the one rookie-ball hitter I've noticed stats-wise. Not to be a downer, and perhaps this is obvious, but this type of guy, with all his production, is still extremely unlikely to be anything ever. I find that dis-spiriting.
