    Not by my definition, but he's possibly the best pitcher on this team's staff. A staff ace, if you will. That's dependent on which Joe Ryan shows up though; Pre-covid or post-covid. Getting a full season of pre-covid Ryan probably gives him that title. All that said, a healthy Mahle is a definite boost to the rotation.

    Yeah, I agree with that. That's part of the deal though if you're going after that top tier guys. I don't like it either, but in a sense I'm kinda at the point where I'd rather risk that for once.

    I agree with pretty much everything in this article, but after watching this FO shop the bargain bin on pitching for their entire tenure, I wouldn't mind a change of pace and go after a high priced FA just to see what happens!

    I'm much less concerned about backup at third than I am at SS. It's a deeper position in the organization while also being a less demanding position. It also has an obvious starter, unlike SS. I guess what I'm saying, is that I'm not too worried about the backup at 3B because I'm okay with the options there.

    You're right! Now I'm curious. If you have two guys manning first base at the same time, is that like two base runners on the same base? Is one of them out? Is that a double negative, resulting in an extra out for the offense? I'M SO CONFUSED!!!!

    I had heard rumors of these types of things going on. Seems like the FO took innovation a bit too far in the training staff department...

    Lee or Lewis? Yes. There's not a wrong answer to this question. And frankly, it doesn't matter. They're both fantastic prospects with potentially elite talent.

    Pretty sure I found it. In order to claim it, I require a $20 finders fee.

    Considering how rare it is for a catcher to win a batting title in the first place, I'd bet that we have seen the last of it. That said, I wouldn't be surprised to see it. I just don't expect it. And I'm in the group that thinks that fewer and fewer catchers will even qualify for batting titles as time passes. This conversation definitely makes me miss the likes of Mauer and Posey a lot more though. Those guys were fun to watch around the plate.

    This squad isn't built for the stolen base, so that they came in last in MLB is not surprising. And I would expect that trend to continue unless they reshape active roster construction considerably. Buxton and Gordon are only going to steal so many bases. I don't see larger bases making a dramatic change to this team's game to game strategy. All that said, I'd absolutely love to see it. I miss that aspect of the game a lot! And a baserunning threat complicates the shift. Less so now with the restrictions, but it can still be a problem for defenses.

    A welfare check should be scheduled should one of these teams actually advance to the World Series.

    If I can get good defensive play, "not a liability at the plate" is enough for me. I don't see that as settling either. Too much ineptitude at the plate on this team that "not a liability at the plate" is still an upgrade.

    No idea if he's worth anything on the trade market, but he can't remain on this roster for next year. It's time to move on whether they can deal him or not.

    Kirilloff definitely needs to be, which I tried to elude to. Polanco seems to be to fading towards the twilight of his career, which is why I don't want him near SS.

    I'm not necessarily opposed to a stopgap, but they have to be something more than serviceable. The problem is that I don't know who that would be. A long term solution would be nice since this team hasn't had a legit, long term solution for too long. I'm still hoping that Martin can figure things out and help out at CF. That's obviously also not without risk. Ideally, right now anyway, I think I'd move Urshela over to SS. Miranda to 3B. Kirilloff to 1B. At least there are more options for 1B than the left side of the infield. Leave Polanco at 2B.

    This is how I'd approach it as well. After those four, I have little interest in any of the other options. Not signing someone has it's risks though. We have no idea where Lewis is on his recovery and we don't know what he'll have when he does come back. I know Urshela can play some SS, so I can live with that in the short term more than I can tolerate Polanco there.

    This seems like a pretty good summation for not just the past week, but the bulk of the second half.

    We're talking two different things. I'm referring to expectations relative to the start of the season not generally speaking over the long term.

    I've maintained all season long that I don't believe that the FO planned to be as competitive as they were. I think they were trying to avoid bottoming out and build for 2023 by getting the prospects big league time and allow the next batch of minor league players to be on the cusp. That's one area where the putridity of the division actually hurt them. It allowed an average team (at best) to lead a division for most of the season and it raised expectations.

    I don't think anything happens to the FO. They were charged with rebuilding the entire organization and the Polhad's have always been patient owners, so I don't see the FO going anywhere. I hope that there are adjustments to the medical staff and procedures, but not much beyond that. Their first draft classes are just now making their way to the big leagues, so I do think that a full evaluation can start to be made now. Now that they are able to implement their full plan from the ground up, results will be expected.
