  1. I think I'd use your own argument to argue that the farm system doesn't do a great job of developing players. Their purpose is to prepare players for the major leagues. Continually having guys come up and struggling is the hallmark of a team that doesn't prepare them well enough. It is not the big league team's staffs responsibility to develop these guys. That's the farm systems job. The majors are a completely different beast and struggles are to be expected, but struggles and failure are very different things.
  2. I've always wondered that too. I would think teams in an extremely tight division around the All-Star break would be much more apt to make deals earlier for the very reasons you mentioned. I would think the opposite would be true of a team like the Twins that have a few guys in AAA that are MLB ready but don't have a spot on the 25 man roster. I know service time plays into that a bit, but if a bottom feeding team can unload a valuable veteran earlier giving them extra time to evaluate their in-house prospects, why would this not be attractive to them? I would also be interested in seeing such a breakdown if it exists.
  3. I'm just going to forget that his comment was even made.
  4. Not necessarily at his age. Might cost a bit more for shorter terms. Potential to be traded all over again. I agree with your point though. He wouldn't be high on my list either.
  5. Key words...if I could attach a giant neon sign to this, I would.
  6. Being interesting doesn't have to be about success. For me, it's interesting in that they've been so ridiculously inept at it for so long. Then it gets more interesting when compared to other teams in the division because it gets even worse.
  7. Disappointed so far...far too early to write him off. Anyone doing that is crazy.
  8. It think it's two-fold. Development is definitely an issue, but I think drafting is an issue as well. True talent will still emerge at some point, whether it be with this franchise or with another. There haven't been a lot of Twins drafted pitching prospects that leave this franchise and have decent careers afterwards with other teams.
  9. There certainly are things to be optimistic about. The top position players are already hitting the bigs, I worry about this FO's ability to fill in the rotation holes with quality pitchers in that gap between when the position players take off and when the pitching prospects start trickling into the majors. If the team is able to keep a core group of position players together long enough and the pitching prospects pan out, we could see an extended run of good baseball here. The Rays were able to do that with elite pitching and average, star-barren lineups. It would be great to see this team have a similar approach, but with more star power in the lineup.
  10. This. This so much. Pick a direction and run with it. Not somewhere between two directions and waffling back and forth. The engine is redlining, but the gears aren't engaged, thus you're not going anywhere. If they wanted to make a playoff push last year, fine. Commit and make a couple of moves to seriously improve the roster. If that isn't in your comfort zone, sit tight and maybe unload a veteran or two to improve the roster.
  11. As someone that didn't really want them to do anything, I didn't really get bent out of shape when they did. I understood the why. I DID get irritated that they didn't do more. If you're going to commit to making a run, you need to be fully committed. That didn't happen, IMO. That bothered me much more than the fact that they were doing anything at all. That goes back to my "stuck in neutral" comment earlier in this thread. That lone move just came off as half-a**ed and that bothers me infinitely more. One of the bigger knocks lately for me on TR is that he appears willing to simply appease the fan base instead of making solid moves to build a winner. Make sound baseball moves. Build a real winner and that will appease the fan base. That's what the fan base wants. People see through the half hearted stuff.
  12. That was a painful, yet very worthwhile read. Some of the early season issues have or are currently working themselves out for a variety of reasons, most of which have little to do with what the FO has done. They've had their hand forced more than they've done the forcing. Thanks for the write-up.
  13. I believe that's why he gave you numbers from August 2nd to the end of the season compared to his career numbers. At least that is how I interpreted it.
  14. I always enjoyed Perkin's use of Johnny Cash's God's Gonna Cut You Down.
  15. While very good, that's not even the best use of a Metallica song for entrance music. That distinction belongs to a certain closer that went by the moniker "The Sandman."
  16. If I remember correctly, Capps at the time had very similar numbers to Jon Rauch. I remember saying to myself that they just traded for a guy they already had.
  17. I don't really disagree with anything you say. I think you laid it out pretty nicely as well. I don't see the money being the issue so much because it hasn't hampered the team for signing other players. I think that it comes into play more with the leash they're given though. They're salaries seemed to dictate that they'd get more slack to the detriment of the team. Now, they're performing so poorly that their salary becomes a hindrance in trade discussions. I never liked the Pelfrey re-signing at all. Regarding Hunter, he took time away from a guy like Arcia who should have been playing more than he was. I realize his injury and atrocious AAA play make this mostly moot, but you can't see that happening during the offseason. I agree, I doubt we miss Hu at all.
  18. This is where I was last year. With that in mind, adding a reliever that doesn't help you become a legitimate contender made no sense. I was hoping they'd be sneaky good this year, and then make that type of deal. I do understand why they did it for the reasons you stated, but I didn't feel that they were in a serious position to really make a deal of that sort worthwhile.
  19. I think most people that were okay with it also expected more to be done. I was in the boat that didn't want them to do anything because I felt last year was a mirage. They needed to stay the course for the future rather than detour for the short term. Stick with the long term plan (ha!), don't budge because you've somehow managed to find yourself within shouting distance of a playoff spot. In the end, TR did what he's been doing for years. He was stuck in neutral. Not advancing enough to be worthwhile, yet not really going backwards. In the end, I wonder how many of those that were okay with the deal were okay with it when they realized that's all that was done. At that end, what was the point of the move at all?
  20. I think the inverse of this is true as well. TR has also committed to players he shouldn't. Extending Suzuki, Hughes, and Pelfrey would be the primary examples. As much as I loved having Torii around again from a fans perspective, it made little baseball sense.
  21. Or over said right fielder.
  22. Agreed. I think he's wasted to a degree in the bullpen. I didn't like the move to the pen when it happened (even though I understand the why), I didn't like when he was sent back there at the beginning of the season, and I don't like it that it appears they aren't stretching him out now in AAA. I think he's more valuable as a starter on this team.
  23. Exactly. The Span trade needed to be done. The only reason I was bothered by it is because I liked Span. Otherwise, I thought it was a good move made with good baseball reasoning. It's the same reasoning that I have for trading Dozier now. In order to get this team back on track, trades of popular players has to be on the table because those are the guys that have value.
  24. I agree with your assessment. i thought the article was lazy and piling onto the heaps of negativity surrounding this franchise. There are enough legitimate reasons to pile on this franchise, we don't need to start making stuff up too. I've never really missed Revere. Even with May in the bullpen, I still look at that deal as at worst a win/win for both teams involved. The Span deal is a bit more bothersome because I really like Span and they've not been able to replace him in the field or at leadoff since. I liked the deal at the time, and I think it still can be a good one. There's only so much that can be done about a guy being injured as much as Meyer has.
  25. I think most that want Dozier traded would like to see it for reasons that aren't knocking Dozier at all, myself included. The very reasons you state are what makes him valuable on the trade market. He could bring a decent to nice return, which would help rebuild this team faster. There also happens to be a top prospect in waiting that the organization has pegged at 2B. Those are the same reasons that Span and Revere were traded, it just didn't work out with Hicks. The returns on those deals is still up for debate as well. IMO, those deals were good at the time and either still are or can be. The other factor in this is that the team has squandered Polanco's options. They don't know what he can do at the major league level. This scenario has shades of Arcia, which a great many posters don't want to see repeated, again myself included. In order for a team in the situation the Twins are in, trading valuable veterans to bring in young talent and free up space for their in-house prospects is what needs to be done in order to revitalize things. I'm of the opinion that Dozier won't be a primary piece when this team becomes a legitimate competitor again, so why not use him to better the franchise now and in the future?
