  1. Clete Thomas+ is maybe not a player any organization needs to keep around at the MLB level. A great guy to stash at AAA if you can get him through waivers.
  2. If Byron Buxton debuts this September then I'm flying all Seattle area Twins fans to Target Field in my private jetliner to watch him debut.* *I don't have a private jet
  3. "Jared Burton has an RSI value that's top 5 in the league, goes out there, spins it real well, but just doesn't get the results he deserves" - Rick Anderson, probably.
  4. Not sure if this is a bug or not, but on the old Roster and Payroll page, when it showed up as an excell document (more or less) I was able to see team salary totals at the bottom. That's not there anymore, just individual player stuff. Is that gone forever? Mostly I'm just lazy when it comes to adding up future salary commitments.
  5. "•Santana becomes a cross between Greg Gagne and Zoilo Versalles at Short" Hopefully more Gagne than Z, unless we're talking about his MVP season.
  6. I think a lot of the fans who don't appreciate Joe Mauer would like him more if he pulled more pranks and had alcoholic tendencies. I don't, however, think that he would be loved by a big majority of the fan base the way he is now (or how I percieve him to be). And that's not Joe Mauer.
  7. If you asked any Twins fan who they wanted at bat with the team trailing by a run, bottom of the ninth, 2 outs, man on second, you'd be hard pressed to give me a good argument for anyone not named Joe Mauer. Joe Mauer is going to return to Joe Mauer form. Hopefully we don't have to suffer through another season of fans booing Joe Mauer.
  8. MORE TWINS AND LOSSES! I don't expect the Twins to finish higher than 4th in the division, and I think they'll end up having a strong grasp on that #5 slot when all is said and done, but I still think this season is a success. Not as successful as I was hoping, but I like where things are going... I just wish they would have gotten going that direction sooner and with a little more agression.
  9. Great stuff here. I definitely don't think it's a smart move to question Joe Mauer's toughness. He's missed some time with injury, but up until bi-lateral leg weakness attacked in 2011, he had been remarkably healthy for a catcher, espcailly one who tore up his knee during his rookie season. I think people look for more from him because of his contract, and maybe rightfully so, but those dollars are spent. Imagine what those same fans would have been saying if Joe Mauer had left and gone elsewhere. I'm glad Joe is still with the ballclub, glad they ponied up the dollar bills, and I'm more than happy to get whatever return he produces on the field going forward, even if that includes more stints on the DL.
  10. When do you think Sano, and then Buxton will join the big league club? I agree that Joe Mauer will return to Joe Mauer with some regression for age.
  11. Sean Doolittle of the Oakland A's did a guest piece for ESPN and made up some Sabermetric stats for Oakland, including in his list were BDP (Beard Dependent pitching), WPA/3+C (win probablitly added with three plus catchers in the lineup) and frFSR (right field fan scouting report) along with others, You can check the article for the full list. What sort of tongue in cheek stats would the Twins have? LAR (Legs above replacement) If you have bi-lateral leg weakness, that's an automatic -2.0 on the LAR scale. HAH+ (Heart and Hustle plus) Adjusted to 100 for league average, above is better, below is worse. Gardy uses this stat to make his lineup. No heart, no hustle, no playing time. 2BB2 (Play second, bat second) The number one stat used to determine lineup construction on a day in, day out basis. _____________________________ Follow me, @BaseballPirate, on Twitter. 12. Good stuff. What type of stats would the Twins use? LAR - Legs above replacement. If you have bi-lateral leg weakness, that's an automatic -2.0 on the LAR scale. HAH+ Heart and Hustle plus, adjusted to 100 for league average, above is better, below is worse. Gardy uses this stat to make his lineup. No heart, no hustle, no playing time.
  13. I was just going to ask a question about this topic, concerning Buxton's promotion and AFL guys. Thanks Seth. I'm also curious to see how Levi Michael does at AA, hopefully he'll be on an MiLB.tv game or two before the season is out.
  14. Goodwill is a great place to go to find gently used things at affordable prices, and DFA'd guys can be useful, but you shouldn't try to build your team with one.(however, you probably could furnish a house shopping exclusively at Goodwill or other thirft store of your choice). I don't think bringing Chris Young onto this team makes them better this season, so what's the use? Let the guys on the roster get ABs and bring up more guys from AAA to be evaluated. Throw it all against the wall and see what sticks.
  15. Escobar is not good at defense. He's not bad, he's certaintly not flashy, but he's dependable to make average plays. I'll take that with his doubles production, even if this is just a flash in the pan. Let him and Santana slug it out for the job this September and into spring training. I love what Escboar brings, he's probably not a SS on a divison winning team, but the Twins don't have that, not this season, and not next season. If Santana continues to hit if/when Buxton arrives, then maybe there's a dilema. Or if Hicks shows he can hit, and not just walk, at the MLB level. I think its easy to find playing time for guys who are playing with on this team, plenty of guys who are "eh" offensively.
  16. My rebuttal. SS: Danny Santana 2B: Brian Dozier 1B: Joe Mauer DH: Kennys Vargas RF: Oswaldo Arcia C: Kurt Suzuki 3B: Trevor Plouffe (who moves to LF when Sano comes up) LF: Chicken Parm/Eduardo Nonsense CF: Aaron Hicks Bench: Pinto, the other between Parm/Nonsense, Eddie Escobar That could be an opening day lineup I could see. Aaron Hicks has always gotten on base at a good clip, and if he can continue to do that from both sides of the plate he can play RF/LF if/when Buxton arrives. Plenty of other guys who can/should be the "run producers."
  17. Lots of good questions in the comments tonight. I'm looking forward to downloading so I can listen tomorrow. One of these days I'm going to catch the live show so I can troll you two with questions again.
  18. Cody, taking a look at some of the guys in the minor leagues, and their current status on (or off) the 40-man roster, who are some names that I should be hoping to see up with the big league ball club before the season is over, as September call ups or otherwise?
  19. The Twins are moving in the right direction, yes. Future success, however, could still be a couple years away. The team may flirt with .500 next season, but unless Gibson becomes more consistent, Nolasco finds his form, and at least one of Alex Meyer or Trevor May reach their potential (and stop walking so many guys) 2015 isn't going to be a roaring success. Yes, it should be better to watch than this season, just as this season was better than last, but I think there's still a lot of work to be done. Sano and Buxton are still big question marks. The talent is there, just have to wait for it to show up. Like aging a fine wine, all we can do is wait.
  20. Joe Mauer puts ketchup on his eggs
  21. My cynicism aside, great article. Always neat to hear the stories behind the guys down in the minors, the coaches have stories to tell just as much as the players.
  22. Also, since this blog was about Joe Mauer aka pizza, maybe this is the appropriate time to ask about M & M's, not Mauer and Morneau, but the candy coated chocolates that melt in your mouth AND in your hand. Do you guys ever wish that the different color M&M's were different flavors? You know, like skittles, but flavors that taste good with chocolate?
  23. Another former player comes back into the fold. How very Twinsian.
  24. ... a bunch of my old blog posts just show up as an empty box with a tiny red x. Any ideas?
  25. I'm not a racing fan, but my fiance grew up in a racing family, and I've learned a thing or two. People have already pointed out that it was a dirt track, and it's hard enough to steer a car on dirt, but it's also important to note that he was driving a sprint car; sprint cars have a huge freaking wing on the top that make it very difficult to see to the right of the car, especially following closely behind another driver. If you watch the video, you can see Stewart is tailing the car in front of him who swerves at the last second to avoid the Ward who is WALKING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TRACK (against the rules, for obvious reasons), Stewart, who was behind the guy who swerved, would have had even less time to see and avoid Ward. Even if Stweart pushed Ward's car into the wall on a previous lap, as many speculate he did, that's not something you take care of on the track. i don't know a whole heck of a lot about racing, but even I know that's something you take care of in the pitt.
