  1. He might even be DFA'd before the end of the season if Crisp comes back relatively quickly. I don't really see why the Twins wouldn't trade him.
  2. Part of me thinks this is just something that they are saying to try to strengthen the return they will get for him. I have a hard time thinking a GM would go into a negotiation and tell the other team that there is a 0% chance of an extension. Seems like you would be giving up all of your leverage.
  3. I'm pretty sure they don't need to sign another crappy FA pitcher next year to use that excuse. They already have Pelfrey. This is a tough comparison, but it is definitely a good discussion point. I have a feeling a lot of these issues about call up times will be done shortly. May is definitely on his way up, and Meyer shortly after. I know we've said this before, but you could see some reasoning why they haven't been up yet, even if you didn't agree with the reasoning.
  4. Welcome to the Twin Cities and welcome to Twins Daily!
  5. In the conservatory?
  6. What's ever happened to that random funny stuff thread. That would probably be a good place for this clip.
  7. I'm thinking that it is going to be Suzuki. There's no way he'll get through in August and it looks like the Cards and O's are already interested: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/07/cards-os-among-clubs-with-interest-in-kurt-suzuki.html If there's already a rumor that they're interested, I'm betting that there are probably talks already underway.
  8. Sorry about the elbow. But forwarding a clip like this to you is what a good teammate should do. To be fair, I was playing softball last night and had the worst throw of my life... and I've made some terrible throws in my time. So, I know that feeling.
  9. I've heard methadone sort of works for that.
  10. Haha. This is amazing. Especially that throw.
  11. I agree that Close is not completely without blame in the situation, but it's important to note the timeline of events in this case. The Astros didn't offer the $5M in a formal offer until hours before the signing deadline. The only formal offer they had made previously was the 40% of the slot value to ensure they got a draft pick. At the same time they restarted negotiations with a 21st round HS pick, Mac Marshall. So, if your Aiken and Close, and you hear that the Astros want to sign Marshall for $1.5M, and they make an informal offer that reduces your bonus by the same amount, and they tell you that it is due to a medical concern that may or may not be an actual issue, wouldn't you be a little angry about the situation too? As for the original question, I believe that both picks are protected this year. The only way that the Astros could lose those picks is if the league decides that the Astros broke the rules, or that they had made an official offer to Nix. If they decide a formal offer is made and Nix signs it, the Astros would be over the cap, I thought that I read both first round picks would forfeited, but I could have misread that,
  12. Sure, but it didn't mean giving up a starting SS with nobody to replace him to get Pryor. We have plenty of guys who can DH.
  13. Morales just finished up a 12 game hitting streak. That could possibly the best performance that anyone will get out of him this year. I guess they thought they should make a deal while they had a chance.
  14. The formal offer was clearly made to ensure that they received draft pick compensation. They knew that there was absolutely no way that Aiken was going to accept that offer. To me, that just shows that they were no longer negotiating in good faith, and that is probably how Aiken/Close felt as well.
  15. I agree with your post for the most part. But (this forum seems to go through this every time Forbes releases estimated values of team), something that needs to be clarified is that revenues are not equal to profits. So, it's not like they have $196M floating around and are fighting with Aiken over a fraction of that. That number doesn't take into account any of their expenses. Did the Astros make a profit last year? I don't know, but it seems pretty likely. This article really just highlights how bad planning/preparation and failure to examine the other negotiating party's position has put Houston in a really bad position not just for this year, but for the near future as well.
  16. This was a great article and a great share. This situation would probably make a great case study for a negotiations class (probably a more advanced one). But it was an interesting situation and this article does a great job of breaking down the situation of both the players involved and the Astros.
  17. This isn't that surprising, especially after last night's disaster. I loved to see him out on the mound the first time around, but he just didn't look like the same guy on second time with the team.
  18. The radio just played one of those Kwik Trip commercials with the creepy butcher. I know, I know. I have said it before, but that creeps the S**T out of me.
  19. Santana is having a game.
  20. I guess that is better than just looking like a plain bad hitter all the time.
  21. That's a costume? I kind of always assumed it was a real bear.
  22. I tried this theory out once. Turns out you need a shirt, pants and shoes as well for this to be true.
  23. I can deal with a tie for now.
