Is there a star for how many games in which a team flat out quits? I’d guess we’d be in the top ten.

So many things have changed about baseball but not rule #1: you can’t win without pitching. And the twins have none. Zero. Zilch.

Twins 2, White Sox 12: Twins Crushed in Game 1 vs Sox
Aggies7 replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Gray careening back to earth is really bad news for the twins. Right now, the only somewhat reliable guy in the rotation is Ryan, and he’s been inconsistent as a rookie usually is. This rotation would be underdogs against any team who could qualify for the playoffs in the American League. I think the twins are probably the 7th best team in the AL. The team was 27-16 (43 games) on May 24. They are now 22-26 in their last 48. More than half the season playing sub .500 ball- 25 replies

Week in Review: Pitching Plunge
Aggies7 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Been watching baseball long enough to know that if the offense finally got going, the starting pitching would struggle. Starters had an ERA over 7 on this road trip -
I think the twins are better than the Sox and guardians, but if either one of those teams goes on a run, they could easily overtake us. Cleveland went on a run and caught us before melting down. If someone reels off 7-8 wins in a row, they could easily take over first place.

Over the last 3 weeks, the twins have lost 7 games they had no business losing. 7. It’s hard not to be “negative” after a run like that.

Then they’ll have to play better than they have been. Under .500 since their hot start high water mark like you said. Haven’t exactly been playing the best teams in the league too. Ugh I can’t take 3 more playoff losses

I want to believe that this is the team that could break the playoff losing streak but I’m not seeing it. We’re down to zero SP’s I have confidence in. 4 of Gray’s last 5 starts have been 5 IP or less. The bullpen, we know how that is. Tonight was a microcosm of what the last month or two has been. No way this should have been a loss. 11 hits and 3 opponent errors combined with spectacular defense on our end, the alleged best starter on the mound. But terrible hitting with RISP and - a one inning inconceivable meltdown from the SP followed by a gopher ball from one of our recent bright spots in the pen. This should easily be a 10-12 game lead but the division is just god awful so we’ll probably win it in the end.

I’m not nearly as familiar with the minor league guys as some here. I would imagine if there’s nobody that can do better, that’s a pretty big indictment on our FO

I find it hard to believe that there isn’t anyone at AAA, heck even AA that could be tried out. What does St. Paul do for a bullpen? No one can come up and help? It gets to a point where it simply can’t get much worse than what we have currently.

I’m afraid we aren’t going to get the bullpen help we need. The expanded playoffs will allow more teams to think they have a shot to get in, thus less likely to sell. More teams competing for a limited number of arms, driving up the asking price. “Just get a couple back end bullpen guys” sounds awesome in theory. With more teams looking for help and fewer teams likely to sell, it’s going to take an awful lot to find as many guys as we need. If we just had like two competent guys not named duran, I don’t think it would be as dire. But it’s as bad as it can be in that bullpen.

But people have literally said here that managers are overrated and don’t contribute much to wins/losses. Seen it posted many a time. So I don’t think I’m that far off.

Yes I can see how leaving the starter in for the 6th inning ay 58 pitches is akin to bunting everyone the first time through the order ?

I’m obviously exaggerating for a bit of comedic effect, but it’s really not far off from what some people think. How many times have you read posts here that say managers are worth many wins, they don’t do much, etc etc? And now this total embracement of any move that the numbers agree with leads me to believe that maybe we SHOULD try a robot manager. Let’s honor bill veeck and be totally innovative and pioneering!

So the decision is entirely based on numbers, which is what I’m hearing here and what people have an issue with. There is no need for a manager then. The front office can program a robot to decide what they want from each individual player. The computer can make all the calls. I’m fine with that. Let’s be the first team to not have a human manager. How cool would that be? We could even dress him up like Rosey the Robot from the jetsons, but with a twins hat on. Even better, it could be the robot from lost in space, that way it’s arms can flail when a decision doesn’t work out. You’d just not be able to spray champagne on it in the event that we win a pennant. Attendance would skyrocket!

No, I didn’t have any issue with asking 2 innings from him. My point was that if 2 innings is the plan, you’d have to acknowledge that his numbers are not great when asked to get 2 innings. Just like bundy’s numbers aren’t great the third time through the order but bundy HAD to come out of the game despite how well he was pitching because his numbers aren’t good in that situation. and, as mentioned above, archer is going tonight. And lord knows he can’t pitch past the fifth inning (if he even gets you 5), so you’re about to toast the bullpen in 2 games. The bullpen had to get 15 outs last night, assume they’ll need to get 3-5 innings tonight. That’s a hefty amount

He hadn’t been asked to go 2 innings since way back in the Yankees series.. and overall his numbers when asked to go 2 are not great, so I don’t see it as a slam dunk decision.

Yes, yes we do. It took a play that has literally never happened in the entire history of baseball to bail out Rocco’s decision, or we probably don’t even get to the 10th
