  1. As the great and wise Ron Swanson once said: "Don't half-a** two things. Whole-a** one thing."
  2. More like foul tip off the protective cup.
  3. Like I said, I completely disagree with you on the trade. Ryan shouldn't be making decisions at the deadline out of desperation. The bullpen he assembled predictably couldn't get the job done, so he reacted and overpaid. He could have been more proactive and done a better job assembling a bullpen and then would not have been in that situation in the first place. He's just compounding bad decisions by making more bad decisions. To me this is just another instance of TR buying high or selling low.
  4. I guess we disagree then. 1.) As a rule I don't like trading for relief help at the deadline, especially one that has thoroughly ML average numbers. Average relievers are about as close to a commodity as there is in baseball. Only the elite bullpen arms are really only truly valuable on their own. Even then a bullpen is sort of a "sum of its parts" unit. Trading for relief help at the deadline is always done as a desperation move and as such the buying team will always have to overpay on general mediocrity. Did we all forget the lessons we learned from Matt Capps? 2.) We were/are still rebuilding. We should be acquiring young talent, not trading it away. 3.) I liked Hu as a very underrated sleeper of a prospect. I always thought he had #3 potential. 4.) It's the Rays. I can't imagine they didn't take advantage of Terry Ryan's ineptitude.
  5. I got a laugh out of it. Puckett is my favorite player of all time, but even I admit he was getting a little tubby at the tail end of his career.
  6. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/are-these-the-best-young-hitters-in-baseball-history/ There is plenty wrong with this team, but that's not it. Guess again.

  8. If 20 players are underperforming at once, that cannot possibly be a mere coincidence.
  9. Speaking of Kevin Jepsen, Chih-Wei Hu, made 4 starts for the Rays AA affiliate- he put up a 0.44 ERA, 1.88 FIP, 11.51 K/9, and a 2.66 BB/9. He was recently promoted to AAA. Since the trade, Kevin Jepsen has given us 40 mediocre innings to a 4.17 xFIP and K/9 just over 7.
  10. Look at his HR/FB rate. He's had quite a bit of luck there. But it's not like he never hit in the minors. He put up above average numbers in AA and AAA. Pretty good for a catcher, which to me always made his Drew Butera-ish hitting line perplexing. Drew Butera hit like Drew Butera in the minors. Herrmann didn't.
  11. Certainly plausible. But given how the youngsters have been handled this that is doubtful.
  12. We won't know that until he gets a chance to prove himself.
  13. Ryan is the manager's boss... So...
  14. I don't think you should draft targeting certain positions like happens in the NFL. It takes years for most of these players to reach the majors, if at all. The MLB draft is obviously more nuanced than just take the player available, but that's generally what's done. However, in instances like the Twins having 0 catching in the system, taking a few catchers early wouldn't hurt.
  15. Is it though? To me I view it as the athletic equivalent of fraud. You are materially misrepresenting yourself to gain an unfair competitive advantage. Take PED's to their logical conclusion. Would it be morally wrong for say pitchers to (when technologically available) surgically modify their arms- bionic arms if you will?
  16. I think that'd be a nightmare to try to enforce. They should either be banned 100% or allowed 100%.
  17. He probably should have signed. But I think we dodged a bullet. I never liked that pick.
  18. I like the idea of taking a college hitter at 15, which seems to be the strength of this class and then go with upside high school guys with the next four picks. At #15 I really like Will Craig. He checks all the boxes with the bat for me: contact, power, and plate discipline (top 5 hitter in all 3 triple slash categories in a solid conference, plus he walks more than he strikes out). Only problem is that he seems to not have a defensive position and seems like a bit of a DH plodder.
  19. I doubt the Twins would ever draft an offense first catcher.
  20. Scoscia is the longest tenured manager in baseball- he's been managing the Angels since 2000, and significantly predates Dipoto. So congrats on finding the one example in baseball history that happened under the most extreme circumstances that don't apply to us. You're red herring is awful tasty though!
  21. I think the weather was the biggest factor last night. It was downright cold and damp, I doubt Berrios has had many starts in his minor league career in those type of conditions.
  22. I think Mauer is finally over his concussion issues. And what's gotten into Nunez? He was pretty good last year with the bat as a part time player too.
  23. I've really hated how he had turned into a pumpkin up until last night. I love watching his fiery emotion on the mound. His fastball velo was back up to where it was when he was successful.
  24. Arcia has come up with some clutch hits this year, for sure. But He's whiffed at over 40% of his PA's so far this year, and has a career K% over 30 and in just under 900 PA's has managed only 0.2 fWAR. He still seems to give away half of his plate appearances by chasing fastballs up out of his swing zone (which, by the way is a huge red flag, and an easy exploitable hole in his swing.) Sure, he's young and can hit the ball a mile, but unless he makes a major change to his approach or gets rid of the gigantic hitch at the beginning of his swing, I think he is what he is at this point- A poor defensive corner outfielder, with lots of raw power, but poor plate discipline, contact issues, and significant platoon splits- A left handed Delmon Young or Avasail Garcia, if you will. Now as far as Nolasco goes, he's overperformed this year, but I think this performance is closer to what I expected when he was signed. He's always had strong peripherals, but underperformed them (an anti-Nick Blackburn). But that doesn't explain underperforming by 1.4 runs per 9 over his contract so far (ERA as a Twins of 5.34 vs. 3.91 xFIP and 3.97 SIERRA).
  25. Def looked like vintage Casey Fien last night.
