  1. Definitely one of the more interesting prospects in the system, however, I don't believe there was a master plan to land him specifically. They could have taken him at #35 or #37 and signed him for right around slot. Any other team could have taken him in that range as well. To not take him at #37 and rather take Leach tells me while high on him, they couldn't have had him that high otherwise they don't risk losing him. I'm hoping they push him to Cedar Rapids for at least a good chunk of the season.
  2. Yeah the 2000's Twins didn't win in the post-season, but in my opinion this team does not have more talent than those teams. Look especially at 2006. Mauer starting his prime winning a batting title. Morneau was the AL MVP. Torii Hunter in CF in his prime. Michael Cuddyer in his prime in RF. CY Young winner Johan Santanna in the rotation. Solid vet in Brad Radke. For awhile they had the phenom in Francisco Liriano before he got hurt. Bullpen had Joe Nathan, Juan Rincon was rock-solid in the 8th. Had guys like Dennys Reyes and Matt Guerrier before that. A young Pat Neshek, Matt Garza and Glen Perkins just coming up. Man, it sucks they never got far in the post-season with all those guys.
  3. I have concerns on how Dozier will age, maybe just me but he seems to hit a lot that barely make it in the seats, he doesn't have the raw power and relies mostly on quick reflexes pulling the ball. I'm worried that once he starts to slip, he goes down in a hurry. That said, I'm a big fan of Dozier and don't want to see him leave. I think it would leave a huge hole in the lineup. Besides Dozier, opposing teams are probably only really worried about Sano in this lineup. A lot of decent hitters, but they don't have any other true middle of the order type threats. Some would say you just fill that hole with Gordon. I'm just not a fan of that. Gordon to me is just not an impact player. Replacing an impact player with an average player is not going to lead to anything good besides saving money. If they had an impact bat coming up at a different position, maybe. Unfortunately potential impact position players are in the low minors. Rooker is one of the only possibilities in the system that could come up in the next 2-3 years. With Dozier I would feel him out, see if he's reasonable. I wouldn't want to go more than 4 years. Not sure what that would be, maybe 4/$70M? If he's concerned more with a market-setting deal I would let him walk if it comes to it.
  4. Interesting article, with Rosario I'm probably a little more concerned with him cleaning up his route to the ball and his decision making in the OF. His defense is still ok overall and not really a problem as long as he continues to produce offensively. I found it most interesting that Grossman pretty much matched Kepler in sprint speed. I do wish they would stop putting Eddie in CF, I'm not a fan of him out there. I'm not so sure RF would be the answer either. He seems to get a little lost at times on fly balls and that could get ugly with the caroms off that wall. Maybe he takes over 2b for Dozier in 2019? (i'm not serious) Seems like forever ago they were trying to turn him into a second baseman.
  5. Well, now we know why Gordon had a rough 2nd half, obviously he was working on his new rap album! http://m.mlb.com/cutfour/2018/01/12/264649332/nick-gordon-dees-brother-and-top-prospect-in-the-twins-organization-launched-a-rap-album Maybe he can record new walk-up music for Mauer in spring training.
  6. I pay very little attention to ESPN anymore, all they seem to care about is politics and the NBA.
  7. Was just about a year ago an article came out with Kepler kind of defying a lot of current baseball logic with his approach to hitting. I wonder if that has anything to do with things? http://twinsdaily.com/_/minnesota-twins-news/minnesota-twins/max-kepler-looks-to-bonds-for-hitting-inspiration-r5406 I would definitely play him more against lefties, let him get the reps. With his swing there is no way he shouldn't hit them better. I often wondered if maybe it would help if he closed his stance a little more against lefties. Maybe that would help him hang in there a little better rather than flying open-just a guess-not an expert in mechanics by any means.
  8. I agree on the placing of Gonsalves above Romero, while the latter has a potentially higher ceiling the odds of it happening are not the best. Hope it happens, but probably a better chance he ends up in the bullpen that an ace starter at this point. Mauer really doesn't have much value, not a bad player at this point, but pretty low on the food chain for first baseman and no team in the league would take him at $23M with his current production. Not trying to knock Mauer, I'm grateful for the career he's had and all, just the reality of a guy at the end of his career with a big contract.
  9. Just reading they were interested in Rodney made me cringe. I've always appreciated him being the other teams closer when the Twins were down in the 9th. Always thought they had a pretty good chance of coming back against him. I just have a feeling this is going to be a train wreck waiting to happen with him as a closer. I guess unless they get some starting pitching it probably won't matter.
  10. I doubt he'll be successful in MLB but stranger things have happened. I wouldn't DFA him as he does have some value as a relatively competent guy you can call up to make an emergency start or two and give you a chance in those games.
  11. Levine should travel over to Japan and Jerry Maguire him. Show up at his doorstep and respond with "I'm not letting you get rid of me, how about that!"
  12. Unless he can reach at least 92 in spring training or has miraculously developed good secondary pitches out of thin air I'd release him. I don't believe he can be effective without his fastball velocity because he's pretty much a 1-trick pony. His secondary pitches have only been effective if hitters are worried about his fastball/cutter. It's too bad, but sometimes you just need to move on and give the opportunity to someone else.
  13. Hopefully they saw something about him they thought would work, still probably needs talented pitchers to make things work. I wouldn't expect miracles, A's bullpen didn't exactly light the world on fire last year. Maybe they'll hit with him like it looks like they did with Rowson last year.
  14. Looks like a good move so far. If it really was pretty much 1:1 offer with no significant 2nd piece that's just not good enough. By not taking the offer it strengthens their bargaining position in the future with opposing GMs by showing they're not going to be forced into making a poor move.
  15. Still waiting to see Buxton's golden arm I hear about. Great at running a ball down, but 3rd best arm in the starting OF (including Kepler-I don't count utility infielders in my starting line-up).
  16. I guess I missed it, why is Adrianza playing LF tonight? There's just no excuse for starting a light-hitting utility IF in a corner OF spot out of position in a meaningful game.
  17. Kind of sad to me that your AAA utility player is your starting DH in an important game in September and your idea of a pinch hitter is throwing out Adrianza. Not exactly a ringing endorsement of Vargas.
  18. I'm not sure if Kohl Stewart has made some adjustments or not, but looking at his last 8 starts he has 40 SO in his last 44 IP. While the other results have not been real great, it is encouraging to see the strikeouts moving up significantly. He's still only 22, from most reports, he still has the stuff. Hopefully he's finally figuring things out.
  19. I agree with giving Slegers a chance at this point. Now with Garcia gone and dropping rapidly out of the race, no point in wheeling Colon out there either. Personally I think Slegers is likely a AAA/AAAA starter that will fail, but he's earned at least a shot to prove otherwise.
  20. I didn't see him getting out of that inning without any damage, nice surprise.
  21. Sometimes you really wonder what Rosario has got going on in his head. That was sad.
  22. I think the Twins are more than a little short of just Garcia to carry them to a playoff spot. I wouldn't have an issue moving young guys like Ynoa as part of a package for somebody they could use beyond this year. They've been entertaining but I don't think this team is good enough to be trading away prospects for short-term rentals. Eduardo Escobar is batting clean-up tonight. That's not good.
  23. Maybe they're giving Gordon some time off? Seems like he's been struggling lately. Nice to see Stewart pitching well and racking up some strikeouts.
  24. I know a lot of people have the opposite opinion and I'm no expert but I'm still not thrilled with it. To me, if Lewis was #1 on their board, they don't get turned down by another player at basically the same bonus before selecting him. Just looking at the history of players selected at the top of the draft vs players selected at the bottom of the first round and below, it's not worth it to play games with that top pick. Hopefully they hit on one or more of those guys picked afterwards like they did on Berrios, but history shows there's a real good chance we'll never hear from them again beyond the minor league reports or as fringe major leaguers. I like Enlow at #76, but they could have just selected him at #35 or #37. I think they reached at both #35 and #37. I think Lewis is a good prospect, and I really hope he turns out great. With him I worry about the offensive side. So far he's started out ok, but he's also in the GCL. I just wouldn't take a guy that high based mostly of tools. I would never have taken Buxton back in '12 at #2 either.
  25. Agreed that Gonsalves could go up to Rochester after another solid start or two. Even though not optimal for the 40-man roster I'd like to see him start a few games at the end of this season to get him a taste of MLB to give him an opportunity to see what he's in for and give him the opportunity to see what he needs to work on in the offseason.
