  1. In the same way that sacrificing a few wins this year for the sake of player development could mean more wins in the future, sacrificing a few butts this year could mean more butts in the future.
  2. Concur, but the W-L record is of minor concern. If they happen to win more games than expected this year, fine. But they should not trade a prospect, ANY prospect, to improve this year's record.
  3. I disagree with the premise of the opening post. The blueprint this year is to continue rebuilding this team for 2016 and beyond. What would make things interesting in the final months of this season has nothing to do with the team's win-loss record. It would be seeing continuing improvement by our best young prospects.
  4. His defense is reason enough to bring him up. He's a top-tier outfielder; he's got range, he's got hands and he's got a cannon. All he has to do is hit .250 or so and he's an asset to the team. I'd love to see him do well enough to hold down right field next year. Arcia can play left, which is where the weakest defensive player on a major league team plays. What's his name, the guy who's in Chattanooga right now, can play center. That could be a big-time outfield.
  5. The primary goal for this season should be to prepare the coming wave of young players to contend in 2016 and beyond. Roster changes should be made with extreme caution. This team should not trade a prospect for an established player unless it's a total knock-your-socks-off offer.
  6. My prediction is similar to Rosterman's: If Hughes is DL'ed Milone will be back in the rotation without ever really leaving and Stauffer stays until Hughes is activated. Stauffer will be gone on Saturday if Hughes is not DL'ed. And Thielbar will go down when Duensing is activated. Milone doesn't really deserve to come out of the rotation but he is probably better suited for the pen than Nolasco even though I think there should be at least one lefty in the rotation. And don't get too hung up on Milone's radar gun readings. Look at Jamie Moyer. He pitched in the majors at age 49.
  7. Total speculation on your part, but I think you could be right.
  8. I think you'll see Nolasco activated soon, either taking Stauffer's place in the pen or Hughes' spot in the rotation if he winds up being DL'ed.
  9. And this is what makes the draft so much more of a crapshoot in MLB compared with the other three major North American sports. Players are draft-eligible at a much lower level of readiness so there will be more early-round misses and more late-round hits. It's also why the draft has so many rounds and why MLB teams have to have large developmental systems. Can you picture NFL franchises having six minor league teams?
  10. I respectfully disagree. Ten games of very good is no more indicative than ten games of very bad. I'd say it would take at least a couple months of consistent raking for me to push for a call-up to the big team.
  11. This is a very interesting bit of information, but please, everybody, keep in mind that these players are the top fifteen out of about 380 major league position players. This is the elite of the elite, not a representative sample, even if you want to consider the best players. It would be more reasonable to consider at least 50 or so at the top of the WAR list.
  12. Buxton (and Sano) should not even be mentioned for call-ups. They are both only 21 years old and coming off a 2014 of little or no baseball because of injuries. They need AT LEAST a few months in AA. Getting back on topic, I'd love to see Hicks do well enough in the minors to earn a call-up. If he can just hit .250 or so his defense and cannon arm make him a net plus either in center or right. Dream lineup for opening day 2017 if everything goes well: Buxton-8, Santana-6, Sano-5, Vargas-DH, Arcia-7, Pinto-2, Mauer-3, Dozier-4, Hicks-9. Bench: Suzuki, Escobar, Rosario and ?.
  13. As I posted on the thread about Souhan's column, there will be no room in the outfield for Santana when Buxton, Rosario, Arcia (and, if we're really lucky, Hicks) are all on the 25-man. He is the SS of the near future and he needs to play there regularly in order to develop his skills. Very few people expected him to play consistently good defensive at this stage, and it's just not a worrisome matter now as long as there is improvement over the course of this season.
  14. OK, here's the deal. The goal for the Twins organization for the 2015 season should be (and I believe Ryan and Molitor concur with this) to prepare their up-and-comers as well as possible to contend in 2016 and beyond. That means playing Santana at SS because it's unlikely that he'll have a spot in the outfield when Buxton and Rosario (and, if we're really lucky, Hicks) make the big club for good. That means having Meyer and May pitch every 5 days and not go to the major league bullpen. That means giving Arcia days off against tough lefties until he becomes more consistent the rest of the time. The win-loss record of the 2015 major league team isn't really very important and I don't worry one bit about the play of the current outfield because Hunter, Schafer and Robinson will all be gone in a couple years anyway.
  15. Major league teams put their worst fielder in left. I'm still hoping Hicks can pick up his game this year so that in 2016 he can play right, Bux can play center and we can put Arcia in left.
