  1. Probably most teams in baseball could have afforded it. Only one offered it.
  2. Hughes, Nolasco, and Pelfrey were All-Stars compared to Berrios in 2016. Hindsight is such a cool deal.
  3. I would love to see where they said that. If I'm not mistaken, Addison Reed took a lesser offer to play in the Midwest. Also, I'm sure you have heard the expression, a team friendly deal.
  4. You cleverly skipped part of Pohlad's original quote. Just say no to myths!
  5. You're thinking inside the box. Going forward, the market is unlikely to change. This offseason was a preview of the future. Twins will have plenty of spending money for quite some time.
  6. For mid-market teams baseball is cyclical. All mid-markets teams must rebuild at some point in time. The marginal drafting position year after year will catch up with you. Surprisingly, another member said the same thing recently while terming it the competitive vs. the rebuild cycle.
  7. Did you know they were the first team in the history of baseball, to go from a 100 loss season, to the play-offs? Can't argue with success.
  8. That wasn't a modest contract, that was market value. All teams scoffed at it, except one. Money matters, as does location.
  9. It's impossible for them to do any better in drafting and development. Did you get a chance to review what the national experts said about our 2017 draft? Still, I can't help but think, our FO didn't get nearly the credit they deserve. As far as development, it was posted on this very board early last season, we had the 2nd youngest team in all of baseball, based on weighted playing time. The jaggerrnaut is clearly on the move.
  10. They were serious this year. Sounds like you're getting ready to jump.
  11. You do not need a mythical ace. Give me a 5 man balanced rotation with additional depth anytime. Don't even pretend you can predict what will happen in a short series.
  12. Right now we are a better team than we have been in years. I could care less how we get rotation help. Plenty of time and plenty of starting pitching still available.
  13. Napoli is a win now move. There has been some talk on the board, which I don't agree with, that we are pointing to 2019 or beyond. Signing Napoli is a clear sign we are looking to ring the bell this season. I wonder if there will be a more valuable 24th-25th man in The Show this season. He needs to hit somewhat over the Mendoza Line and give us 25-30 bombs. If he still owns a glove, he may be the emergency catcher, that gives Garver an opportunity to be used differently.
  14. Napoli gives us another bomber. At crunch time make them deal with a proven vet who can go yard. I like a one year deal.
  15. So why were members screaming to pay off Mauer and Hughes? A few weeks back this board was flooded with members stating all GM's didn't even consider the back end of a long term contract. That has certainly been proven to be wrong. Just say no to myths!
  16. He was a starter in high school and his freshman year in college. Every thing I read about him going into the draft was, teams were going to look at him as a starter. A lefty throwing 96-98, with what was once called the best slider in the organization, and several times I've read he has a 4 pitch mix. It was a no-brainer to draft him and also to see if he could transition to a starter. His last year in college he pitched 70 innings, so they knew going in it was a 2 and probably a 3 year project to get him up a starter innings. Injuries are part of the game, and no one knew his first 3 years he would pitch only about 100 innings.
  17. No. A bad contract is a bad contract, no matter how you spin it.
  18. One of the top 4, plus a one year, make good starter. If he is 100% healthy, I like Hector Santiago.
  19. I can guarantee it will be significantly more than nothing. The new regime has proven to be masters at rebounding. They did it at the trade deadline when they picked up 4 arms, after they blinked by trading the pig with lipstick to the Yankees. When Marte could not pass his physical, they picked up 2 players BA had in the top 100 going into the 2017 draft, then used 2018 money for a top prospect made available by Atlanta doing the naughty. If we don't sign Darvish, I certainly hope membership waits for the fat lady to sing, before considering jumping off the ledge.
  20. I read that also, but the fact is he has pitched 45 innings in the past 2 years. I'm comfortable with my guess.
  21. You are hardly qualified to speak for the millions of loyal and knowledgeable Twins fans out there. On any fan board you are always going to find fan members, who feel if you don't win the final game, you have failed. Just as you will find members where the train is not exactly on the track.
  22. I would guess the ship has sailed on both Jay and May being starters. Romero appears to be our best chance for a top of the rotation guy, until we get down to our teenagers. I would be very, very patient with him.
  23. We have already won 2 of the past 3 years. Let me provide some foresight. When we are staring at our computers after the 2021 season, we will have won 6 of the past 7 years. Few, if any, mid-market teams will be able to say that.
