I'm a glass half-empty guy, so I thought a loss was inevitable after the Gregorius home run. All the momentum from the top of the 1st was gone and the Yankees pen was already deployed and mowing down batters. 3-2 fastball in that situation seemed like a mistake. 1st & 3rd and one out. I would have rather Santana thrown a slider and risked a walk to load the bases and faced Castro (a righty) than challenge the lefty with 25 HRs on the year and the short porch in right. I know Santana didn't have the slider working last night, but it would have played better against Castro, especially considering he chased one from Berrios out of the zone for a K later in the game.

We need an ace. We need an ace. We need an ace. We need an ace. If you're top 2 starters give up 7 runs and can only get the team 5 innings in the most important game of the year, than there's not much else the rest of the team can do to win.

Article: A Blueprint For The Bronx
JaleelWhite FanClub replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Do we know for sure Severino will be the starter? If I were the Yankees, I'd run out a lefty starter as LHP neutralizes the Twins lineup. Cases in point would be what Garcia and Sabathia did to the team last week. -
Article: MIN 4, KC 2: Comeback Complete
JaleelWhite FanClub replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Living in Omaha, I watched the game on Fox Sports KC via their team broadcast. Their crew thought Polanco may have bunted on his own. I thought they were right considering Polanco took a big rip on the first pitch of the AB right before he bunted.- 67 replies

I agree. The one caveat would be that the Twins would need to clinch a spot with a couple of games left. That way they could set up the rotation to have Santana start the WC game. I don't know if I'd trust anyone else in that spot. Also, the big fear would be to face a good lefty starter in the WC game (or even a WC #2 play-in game). Kepler and Castro would then become a non-factors while Rosario and Mauer would be neutralized. Polanco and/or Escobar would have to hit from their weaker right sides. A lot would fall on Sano, Buxton, and Dozier.

I'd love to see Moya promoted, but figure it'd be a waste to go to Rochester as the Red Wings will most likely miss the playoffs. With the Twins in the playoff hunt and having e a crowded bullpen already, it probably makes sense for him to stay in AA. Bonus would be he'll get playoff experience. I can't wait to see where he starts next year (knock-on-wood he stays healthy). Maybe he jumps straight to Minnesota.

It's great watching Polanco's surge. I know most of the spotlight has been taken away as Buxton's turnaround has happened at the same time. He can add so much potential for this team as a switch-hitter with speed and a decent glove at 3 infield positions. You had to know all the talk around Polanco's downfall early this summer was way too premature. I have to imagine the loss in his family he suffered took a toll. It seems that if any young player not named Buxton has a slump, to most fans, their careers are over (i.e. Rosario, Polanco, Berrios, etc.). Here's to hoping that Jorge fits in alongside Byron as a member of the Twins core for the years ahead.

I'm confused by this as well. This is the third or fourth article over the last week or so that has really downplayed Garver's potential. And the reader reaction has followed suit. As I recall, Garver's been looked at as the hopeful heir apparent to the Twins starting catcher spot for a few seasons now. His stats this year at AAA, I would think, would do nothing but excite a ton of people and prove all the hype he's received previously. But for some reason everyone is all-of-a-sudden saying "Meh, he's probably just a backup or platoon candidate with the Twins." Especially with the lack of high position player prospects, Garver should come with a ton of hype. I don't get it. Someone help me understand.

All would be forgotten if this time next year we're talking about Santana making a start for the Twins. Hey, a diehard Johan fan can always dream. Would be great to see him pitch anywhere again.

Article: Twins July Trade Candidates
JaleelWhite FanClub replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Garver = Granite? No way. Up until last year Granite wasn't on anyone's radar. He was (and basically still is) a light-hitting speedster with a good glove at best. Did he ever crack the TD Top 20 prospects before this season? He's obviously not a bad player, but also has never had the potential of Garver. Garver has been a steady performer since he was drafted, putting up good numbers with the bat, showing well in the AFL (twice), and improving defensively to the point defense-superstar Stuart Turner was made available and lost. Throw in the fact Garver doesn't have a Buxton-type guy blocking his spot on the big league roster, and yeah, the comparison with Granite has no merit. And no one is comparing Garver to Buxton in terms of pure talent or ceiling, but he's much closer to that level of prospect than to what Granite is.- 111 replies

That someone would be me! And yes, given the choice of Castro, Gimenez, and Garver, I would much rather see Garver starting at catcher tonight for the Twins than the other two.- 111 replies

Seth hit this earlier, but why couldn't Garver be a platoon with Mauer while playing catcher or OF on the days Mauer's at 1B?- 111 replies

Article: Twins July Trade Candidates
JaleelWhite FanClub replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Move Gimenez like yesterday!!! The most important thing I read in the article was that by moving him, we'd give Garver two months in Minnesota. He's earned the promotion and getting the reps now would set him up to start 2018 with the big club. Mauer's done after next year. Castro would have two more years (but nothing says the Twins couldn't move him or shift him to the #2 role). Garver getting time split between C and 1B would be ideal going toward the future. To me, Garver, Gordon, and possibly Wade are the position players to fill in the spots next to Sano, Buxton, Kepler, Polanco (I still believe!) and Rosario (KEEP HIM!).- 111 replies

Article: Ode To Byron Buxton
JaleelWhite FanClub replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm hoping Buxton doesn't turn into the next "Mauer contract" as the most divisive issue amongst fans. Judging by the posts above, though, he's on his way there. Of course, if he hits at all, the point is mute. But I tend to agree with the posts above wondering about the point of writing this article. The tie in with the draft I get (though it's a little weak to think it deserved a whole article). His defense is amazing, but do we need a whole article basically calling him a "star" despite being the 5th worst qualified hitter in the majors. You can't call Buxton a "star" yet. And at this point can we really make statements like WHEN his hitting comes around rather than IF. Their is no guarantee he'll turn it around. -
The only conclusion I can take from last night is the Twins did not supplement the Sano, Kepler, Berrios, Buxton core with an elite pitcher. I think Twins fans will be more than justified, then, to expect Falvey and company to pursue a big-league ACE pitcher either this year or next year via free agency or trade to push the young core toward a championship. With Mauer's contract coming off the books after next year, money should not be an issue. Waiting and hoping for Gonsalves or Romero or Berrios to be a legit #1 won't cut it. If the FO wants to try to win a championship with the young core in Minnesota, it's time they find a true #1 starting pitcher already in the majors because they passed on the chance last night.

I can't believe all the negativity about last night. There was no Bryce Harper this year. Basically every player came with risk. Trashing the Twins for their picks without seeing any of the three play pro ball in addition to seeing the others the Twins "passed on" play is ludicrous. Everything I read about him makes me like Lewis. Finding elite up the middle talent is always tough. Like with any other HS pick, all there's to do at this point is hope for the best for him. I may be wrong, but I don't remember everyone being upset when the Twins took Gordon, another top HS shortstop (probably with a lower ceiling than Lewis). He's turned out all right. As for the Carlson pick, I agree with all the posters above that I don't give a darn about the Twins not picking a local guy. Really? We want the team to change their plan to accommodate picking a "feel good" story. What a lousy way to run a baseball team.

Throw me on the Wright bandwagon. I'd much rather see the #1 pick in the Twins top 5 on a track to get to MN in the next year or two rather than having Greene and potentially wait 5 years for him to get to the majors. I think the Twins should focus on 2018 or 2019 as the opportunity to compete for a title and Wright or any other top college arm would help with that cause.

I love Gordon at #1. Everybody had to see the offensive surge heading into the year considering his time in Arizona, his age, and how tough the FSL is on hitter stats. He's always hit for average, and now he's getting stronger and adding pop to his game. Any ideas where Gordon is/will be on national prospect lists? Especially if he can stick at SS, I gotta imagine he's a Top 10 guy.

Love the fact Wade has cracked the Top 10. A lower-round pick who has done nothing but produced in his time with the organization. It's been fun to follow he and Gordon tearing up AA. IMO, Garver falls in the same boat as Wade, but at a more prominent defensive position. I guess I just need to come to terms with the idea that Garver is the "Rodney Dangerfield" of TD rankings. He gets NO RESPECT.

Article: Backup Backstop Battle Royal?
JaleelWhite FanClub replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great article and what a nice problem for the Twins to have! The important thing I would think would be to promote either Murphy or Garver. Which one? I think if you're the Twins, you keep the one you see as the long-term starter in AAA to get the reps as the primary catcher (face LH and RH pitching). The other can be the platoon guy vs. lefties with Castro.- 40 replies

Article: The Joe Mauer Quagmire
JaleelWhite FanClub replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
That totally wasn't the point of the article. No one's placing sole blame on Mauer's shoulder for the team's losses. It's simply analyzing his struggles so far this year as I would expect be done to any other player.- 104 replies

This 25-man proves that Mauer is untouchable within this organization, no matter who's in charge. His backup at 1B is the backup catcher? Count me highly doubtful we'll see much of a platoon at first this season. Two more years ... Let's hope the Twins don't see a lot of lefties over the first week or so. I mean LH opposing pitchers as opposed to LH hitters, as our 13-man rotation can match the hell out of the numerous washed-up vets we've collected out in the bullpen.
