  1. Living in the Cities then, after years of following from the plains of ND, I was so incredibly excited that year, and really gassed at that particular trade. Even in the dark days of 82, and the tease of 84, you could see it coming with that group of kids, and then veteran pieces added, like Gladden, Reardon, and the return of Bert- it was a great mix. I remember the ads posted on the Strib news boxes- pic of Kirby with a caption "How the West is Won" I thought, walking around town, 'damn straight, here we come.' That was a magical year.

  3. They're going to be good. That Keuchel is a hell of a pitcher. I only hope that the day comes soon, though when this look will be remembered as fondly as this look...

  5. Great stuff, Matt. What was your out-pitch in those days?
  6. Captions on photos, especially when discussing unfamiliar players, would be a good idea. Great to credit the photog, that's not done enough, but who are those 2 guys?
  7. There were a lot of great memories on the field, but maybe it was my one and only close encounter- up in the warehouse district after a win- I think he hit one that night- and Kirby at the next table scarfing plate after plate of wings. I gave him a fist bump with his non-wing hand, in my Summit-fueled haze. "You want one man?" he said. "Naw, Kirby," says I, "sluggers get all the wings, I'm just a banjo hitter." He laughed that laugh, and I'd had my moment.
  8. Heh... I'm not telling. Making a killing in Vegas, tho! (snickers, knowingly)
  9. I'm just posting here to show that checking in to TD, on a random February day, during the Stupor Bowl, is more interesting than watching 3+ hours of ads.
  10. I always liked the guy. Glad he's met with some success in Cleveland. But--- I still get a chuckle remembering this one--- ;-) http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/jeff-manship-jersey-plagued-spelling-mihsap-055022148.html
  11. Me too. Hopefully, he's also 'battling his tail off.' I've been wondering all winter so far what he's been up to- winter ball, or what. I've lost so much sleep over this... That is good news, not only on the skills front, but especially on the attitude front. I'm really pulling for him. I want opposing pitchers to sh*t themselves coming to Tar-zhay Field, and facing a murderous row of young sluggers.
  12. I'm just diggin' how you used Pelf as a verb...
  13. Well, at least we got another BB Barbarosa (B. Boshers) to replace the cat from last year. (B. Boyer). Whoopee.
  14. OK, among TD faithful, I may be in the minority, but I actually like having Milone as a #5. The season is a long grind, and you have to manage each game with that in mind. Having a slow-balling lefty one game, and a hard-throwing sinkerballer the next messes with the overall timing of the opposition. One game at a time, yeh, he's not so impressive. But IMHO, he benefits the rest of the rotation around him. '3 Nights in August,' a dissection of Tony LaRussa's Cards a few years ago, pointed this kind of thinking out eloquently. You need a change-of-pace guy like Milone through the long slog of the season. Yes, TM would probably not start a potential playoff game, but his presence over the long haul is important. I've got a Cheshire grin right now, thinking of how Berrios fastball would look to hitters the day after a Milone start...
  15. Like a bunch of other folks, I just don't understand this either. Plouffe is nothing more than adequate at 3rd, and Park is simply going to have to DH. So why not get Poof into the OF, where he's already had experience, and not move your prize kid to an unfamiliar position at the same time he's still trying to learn to hit ML pitching? WTF, why make him do 2 tough tasks at the same time?
  16. True. Shouldn't be surprised, it's par for the course. But dang it, I wanna be surprised for a change! It's even Xmas time, come on, TR! I'm not one of the 'fire TR' ranks, but I often question the judgement of the FO. And if we go into another spring, like last year, with a bunch of castoffs and "who's he?" dudes in the pen, I'm gonna be foaming at the mouth along with the rest. The BIGGEST, most glaring weakness of the team all year long, not addressed at the winter meetings. FFS.
  17. I'm hoping he can pick it up. Gee, it would be good to have a one-stop update on who's doing what in winter ball. Seen a video of the big kid hitting a mammoth HR, but wonder how he's doing overall. Is Arcia playing this winter?
  18. I heard earlier rumblings here about pursuing Tony Sipp- I like that idea a lot. We've got good help coming up from the farm, too, it's just a question of when some of 'em will be ripe enough to be picked. Jeepers, those boys down in AZ looked durn good this fall, didn't they? I swear, though, we simply can't get to spring again with that list of pedestrians and suspects like we had in the pen last year. That was a disgrace, and the most glaring weakness in the team all year.
  19. Heh... as it that's where they were soon working after some time with the Twins?
  20. He sounds like a solid young man, with his feet on the ground, and a good head on his shoulders. It's great to see a kid from a non-baseball country succeed. That said, it's a good thing he's over here, 'cuz the USA sevens rugby side is about to blast his South Africa side in the Dubai Sevens this weekend, so there's that. Heh....
  21. Burdi's 8th inning was all the more impressive- 1-2-3 inning, 2 K's 7 pitches, 7 strikes! Ho----ly Cow! I'd like to see what the gun had to say on those pitches, too. I hope he can keep it up, and get up with the big club this year!
  22. Ahhh, yeah.... me too! Hey! I didn't see you there!! Yes, it was a great trip down memory lane, this article- big thanks to Parker. It's kind of bittersweet this stuff all happened in the pre-digital age. I don't know where I might have photos of that night anymore-- but on the other hand, there are a few select memories for which I'm glad there was no camera around!
  23. Wow, thanks for the great report- It's nice to get some light shed on this area, and get to know some names to look out for in the future.
