  1. Stop it. Just stop it. The big guy is a 3B. How the hell do you expect him to work hard enough to nail down that traditional power position with adequate MLB fielding acumen if you keep jerking him around? Let him concentrate on the one position he's been prepping for years, and stop messing around. FFS.
  2. He sounds like a solid young man, with his feet on the ground, and a good head on his shoulders. It's great to see a kid from a non-baseball country succeed. That said, it's a good thing he's over here, 'cuz the USA sevens rugby side is about to blast his South Africa side in the Dubai Sevens this weekend, so there's that. Heh....
  3. Me likey, if the price is right, for all the reasons above. Or Span-ola. Both still have a lot of useful tools, are great guys, and were great Twins. But I also see we brought back Joe Benson on a minor-league flyer. Hmm.... that might preclude the other two.
  4. Heh... I love it! And every game an exciting 11-8 slugfest!
  5. Burdi's 8th inning was all the more impressive- 1-2-3 inning, 2 K's 7 pitches, 7 strikes! Ho----ly Cow! I'd like to see what the gun had to say on those pitches, too. I hope he can keep it up, and get up with the big club this year!
  6. They need to go out and find whatever octogenerian worked with the young Randy Johnson, and wheel him down to Ft. Meyers this spring.
  7. Ahhh, yeah.... me too! Hey! I didn't see you there!! Yes, it was a great trip down memory lane, this article- big thanks to Parker. It's kind of bittersweet this stuff all happened in the pre-digital age. I don't know where I might have photos of that night anymore-- but on the other hand, there are a few select memories for which I'm glad there was no camera around!
  8. Padres thought they were contenders THIS year- and so did the Mariners, White Sox, Nats....
  9. Geez. 3 posts in a row. (Make it 4...) Can you tell I miss baseball already?
  10. He is a Cali boy- might welcome a return home.
  11. In that alternate universe, where Spock wears the goatee, we could trade 2nd-half Dozier, and keep 1st-half Dozier. That would be swell. And logical.
  12. Absolutely positively yes. Another long-term mistake, I think, on the Twinks part. I never understood why they didn't at least try that, since at the time, Poof was nowhere near competent at 3B. I dig that Poof is a great guy, and a solid teamate. But I agree with an earlier poster, that he's just not solid enough to block an uber-prospect like Sano.
  13. Hee Haw!! Good one, Jimbo- I can almost hear the creaking!
  14. I dunno, National League and all-- But... veteran club, tons of ex-Twins, who knows? It would not surprise me. Little Nicky, bench coach, keepin' the young'un in line, and battlin' his tail off... could be a good thing!
  15. Just off to work- bloody day games-- I wanted to repost this from late, late last night, in yesterday's thread, with thanks to one and all-- There. That's over with. On a final note, I want to thank the Twinkies for giving me a reason to spew vitriol in OCTOBER for a change. None of us expected this, and it was one wild ride. It was really special through this late summer, to care about what happened day to day. You have to admit, looking at the roster as it is, it's hard not to think, 'what the h... are they doing in the race?' I'm not banking on another good run next year, but I am much more hopeful, and looking forward to the coming of spring. Thanks, too, to all the TD folk out here- I discovered this site last year, I think, and started as a regular "user" (ohh, my veins...) this spring. The people I've come across and conversed with really helped make me feel at home, in a place so far away from there. I'm already anticipating the banter around the hot stove. Thanks, all. Let's get 'em tomorrow.
  16. I concur, Dr. We had all of these young flamethrowers with the hope that at least one, maybe even 2 of them would get to the big club by the end of the year. Sadly, nearly all of 'em flamed out. (I was drooling at the possibility of Burdi stalking out of the pen in July and August, then he just disappeared.) That's why we had to suffer through with Barbarosa and Dunse and Thompson for as long as he did, and live with the Fien roller-coaster, yikes.
  17. Me too. It was being talked up, but didn't happen. I have to think there was some kind of personal stuff going on there, but what an addition he would have been for the stretch drive. I know a lot of people rip on Zuke, but my gawsh, where would the Twinks be without him this year? He was just too worn down to be the everyday guy. I was shocked how many days I was really expecting him to have a rest that he was once again in the lineup- day games after night games, multiple days in a row, even after extra-inning affairs. That is one heck of a demanding position for a younger guy to hold up all year, and the Twinks shot themselves in the foot not getting AJ or somebody of that ilk to at least spell Zuke on a regular basis.
  18. Right on there. I loved how old-school he was- get it, and throw it. Games under 2 hours. I hated him with the Sox, but wished we could see him in a Twins uni at some point. I remember reading a couple different times the club had a shot at acquiring him, and I crossed my fingers hard. Wasn't to be, but I've enjoyed watching the guy pitch (except against us), and wish him well. And, if he's never going to be a Twin, I'm glad he's gone!!
  19. There. That's over with. On a final note, I want to thank the Twinkies for giving me a reason to spew vitriol in OCTOBER for a change. None of us expected this, and it was one wild ride. 20. Sorry, all this happened in the middle of the night for me, and I had all of that misery to greet me Sunday morning. Almost enough to drive me back to church. I just finished ripping on Mauer, now it's Poof's turn. Yes, he's tons better at 3B than in the past. He's more than just competent over there, but the same issues just keep popping up- his positioning and readiness. That was a tough liner, with some wicked slice on it. But if you're not standing straight up like a statue of a pudgy Herman Munster as the pitch comes, in, you can move with it. Fer cryin' out loud, I played old man baseball in LA in the 00's, and I made that play time and again. Even slow as molasses as I am, if you're positioned, and ready to move, you've got a leg up, and at least give yourself a chance. Poof has come a long way, and made some great plays, but some of them needn't have been great in the first place if he's got his head in the game.
  21. That play is only partly on Mr. Portly, chugging off the mound in slo-mo. It's mostly on Mauer, for not giving him an inside target. That is just 1B play 101. The target he gave (or didn't bother to give) was right in the runner's path. I know he had to scramble to get over there, but you have to give that pitcher an INSIDE TARGET!!! It's exactly the same as when a catcher has to throw a dropped 3rd strike over there. You have to set up inside-- if the pitch gets away outside, you set up outside. Not directly in the path of the F-ing baserunner. Even if you're scrambling, you have to want and anticipate the throw there. FFS- this crap should be locked down in February and March. PFP, as Bert is so fond of saying.
  22. Cripe. I had to go edu-ficate young minds, and missed the rally. But, so glad I could come back to a nice-----
  23. That response doesn't seem very moderate...
  24. He thinks so, too, it seems. Herculean swings with weak groundouts and Ks...
