  1. I know a lot of people have been down on Plouffe due to his low average, but I've liked his approach at the plate this season and think he will do better, especially if he gets more opportunities. I feel pretty much the opposite about Valencia. He had an excellent 2010, but even his other minor league numbers lack promise and his PA look terrible most of the time.
  2. At least there's been some solid contact. That's different from last week.
  3. Question: If Weaver has a no-no going in the 8th, does he rush into the clubhouse again to take a whiz?
  4. Ok, so once again, the entirety of the Twins bench will consist of Drew Butera? Can we please drop a pitcher?
  5. I agree that Carroll hitting in front of Span is a nice combo. I'd prefer to see Mauer at the #2 with someone else at the #3 but option are limited. Gardy always likes a MI hitting 2nd but skills and not position should dictate that.
  6. No reason not to try him. Let a pitcher go.
  7. It's pretty awful to think that the Twins may avoid a sweep only due to one of the most bone-headed plays I've seen in a long time.
  8. Agreed. In terms of days off this year, I think the organization's poor communication last season along with some members of the media disdain have boxed him in with the fan base.
  9. Playing him anywhere else greatly devalues him, though there is a tipping point where maximizing his at-bats, in terms of his career, does become more valuable.
  10. ...and this includes Gardy since last summer. I really hope I'm wrong but, as I said, I think Seth is right and that we should probably be happy if he posts an OPS in the high .600s
  11. It could be argued that he struggled in AAA recently, though. I agree with Seth that expectation and perception are way too high for Dozier.
  12. http://goo.gl/HeSC9 It appears that as Riverbrian intuits, the impact a catcher can have is on pitch selection, and thus influence things like groundball ratio. The article notes that this skill is independent of how good of a defensive catcher a player is. The article does point out that catcher ERA is not a reliable tool.
  13. Very true, but there were/are other options to having such a short bench even if you don't want to DL him. Mauer's injury further complicated it by forcing them to call up Butera. Maybe the point is they're valuing a 13th pitcher right and sacrificing depth everywhere else for it.
  14. I didn't mean that Morneau was a marginal player, but not DLing him was a move on the margins. If he plays this weekend, probably not a big deal. If not, they it's another poor move by the Twins - a team carrying 13 pitchers and an extremely short bench.
  15. Interestingly, the Twins Rule 5 pick, Terry Doyle, returned to his old team, has incredibly similar numbers to Scott Diamond at AAA. Diamond does have a better ERA (1.3 Difference) while Doyle has better K/9 (2.4 diff). For walks, they're both under 2/9. My point here is that, had they felt Doyle was worth the pick I would have preferred they give him a longer look. He could have been kept in the pen for a bit and could have added some possible depth, even if he is the same pitcher as Diamond.
  16. Was anyone else surprised that Morneau didn't play tonight? I wasn't, and it doesn't seem like they're sure on when he'll return. With an already short bench thanks mostly to 13 pitchers, it won't be much longer until refusing to place Morneau on the DL will be another questionable roster move. Maybe it's simply due to the fact that I'm get so much information about the Twins, but I've been extremely disappointed with their judgement at the margins this season, both in terms of management and talent evaluation (use of relatively poor information even more than inability to find players). I know some would argue those margins (last couple of active roster spots) don't matter, but I think that we're seeing just how important depth is.
  17. Had Valencia been on the bag, Carrol's diving stop would have been an out.
  18. Sadly the Twins don't have someone they can sit on the bench and play all OF positions. As mentioned I don't think they want Revere or Benson doing that right now because it would hurt their development.
  19. I think Clete is on the team to be that 4th outfielder, allowing Revere to hit everyday in AAA. I also think the reason Willingham is in left is due to Morneau DHing. At least, I hope that's the reason. Willingham can't be that much worse in RF than he has been in left. I've got to believe that moving him to right and putting someone else in left would net the twins more runs saved, especially if it were someone like Revere.
  20. Phil Mackey tweeted that his sinker's downward movement this season has been comparable to Carmona and close to Tim Hudson, so whatever he's been doing has made it darn tough to hit.
  21. Dozier probably needs more time in AAA. He's not exactly tearing the cover off the ball, especially after his fast start.
  22. Just saw this from Joe Christensen via twitter, about as sardonic as I've seen him: #Twins offense flailing away against Jerome Williams in an attempt to take Liriano out of the headlines. #Angels lead 4-0 (bot 5th).
  23. To be DFA'd you'd have to clear waivers first. The reason he needs to clear waivers is that he is out of minor league options. So, if he clears waivers he can then be assigned wherever. I'm not sure about the 40 man roster spot. I think if he's got a ML contract I don't think he can be removed 40 man can he?
  24. I don't think its an issue of one move, but that it's the most recent in a group where it seems odd, creating questions about personnel judgement and overall roster decisions. They judged Burrough's worthy enough to make the team out of spring training but 30 AB later he's DFA. Especially highlighted here is the 13 man pitching staff.
  25. That's Spring Training numbers for ya....
