  1. An unknown from AA is not depth. Predicting that Hicks would succeed and that both would be healthy was a very high risk proposition and certainly far less likely than the reverse, that both would be relatively healthy and Hicks would perform as an adequate ML CF. Arcia can't play CF regularly.
  2. Can't tell if this is serious, Badsmerf.... When Morneau was struggling, he was opening up early (credit: Parker's video analysis), making it nearly impossible to hit the outside pitch. I feel like I've seen him doing the same thing recently on the ABs I've seen, though I haven't broken it down in slow motion or seen every AB he's taken.
  3. I think that Twins fans are ready and deserving of a more intellectually stimulating broadcast. *They are not the broadcasters we need, nor the broadcasters we deserve right now.
  4. Right -- having people who play CF is not the same thing as having a CF. I think the Twins should have been looking for a second option like Mastro, mostly because if Hicks didn't/doesn't work out, you really don't have anyone behind him and you don't want Hicks or Benson getting ABs everyday without hurting the team as much as possible. Who is our current backup CF even?
  5. Major league level veteran hitter!
  6. At some point, teams will need to see if Hicks can actually hit like Bonds before they keep pitching around him like Bonds, right?
  7. Yeah, I didn't catch it on at-bat, but the side angle looked like it came right at the knees at the front of the zone and then dropped.
  8. Hicks is looking better, but that pitch was too close to let go.
  9. Had both these in the Arcia HR.
  10. Just an update on Hicks vs. The Weather. Hicks tied this one up, but the weather answered back within just 24 hours to regain a 4-3 lead. Hicks might get two games tomorrow to make up the difference. This is edge of the seat kind of stuff.
  11. While I think this article is a bit premature and never thought we should have moved Hicks up, for him to be hitting close to .200 by the end of two weeks, he would need to hit around .500. I'd settle for him putting up decent numbers (like he put up in AA) to keep the experiment going.
  12. Absolutely agree, and that was my point -- Plouffe will never be a Hardy type.
  13. Most teams in the league would be happy with a Hardy-type. He's a far better SS than people give him credit for and he can hit.
  14. The Twins have more postponed games than Hicks has hits.
  15. You mean like say, a struggling CF who you just called up from AA and looks overmatched, a 4th OF type CF who just went on the DL, and nothing else in the cupboard?
  16. Found this via Twitter and Hardball Talk's Craig Calceterra. The Embarrassing History of Pete Abraham & JBJ | Fire Brand of the American League While it centers around one writer's coverage of a player it actually is an amazing mirror to the story of a player here in Minnesota. You could almost interchange the Twins' player and it would read the same.
  17. If Batman were into baseball he'd be....Bill James...
  18. Okay, but I think the rest of the post still stands and it is why you are getting a lot of blowback on this thread. It would literally take less than a minute to look up the stats that have been discussed here (as others have pointed out).
  19. You would be dead wrong. You've been watching and following the Twins philosophy too much. Seriously, you need to be able and willing to look at SOME stats when you are trying to defend your points otherwise you lose credibility. 52 qualified starters had K rates over 7. 108 relievers had more than 7 k/9 rates.
  20. Yeah but he takes he takes a big bat to a bunch of them, hitting 33 percent of the time and probably brains 40ish zombies with it before going down.
  21. Actually moved down twice in one day. Wasn't it after last game when he said he didn't want to hurt his confidence by moving him down and now they want him to feel more comfrtable...these messages are so confusing! Really, though, it's great to see that it seems to mean Mauer is locked into the #2 spot in the order with all this upheaval in the lineup today.
  22. It's clear at this point, imo, that his anointing was poor evaluation by the Twins. Additionally, it kept them from filling CF with at least a stop gap this season, for which they are likely scrambling for now. Sure, they can give it to Maestro, but they still need someone to play a decent backup unless they are going to try Benson or Clete Thomas. I know Nick tweeted something about him now knowing what he needs to learn when he gets sent back down, but I think that's a really optimistic view and I really think it's nearly impossible to justify his spot on the major league team right now and the initial handing of the starting spot. I didn't even think he'd be this bad, and I even allowed myself to hope a bit after spring training (even though I don't put stock in it myself). What frustrates me even more is the patience they've had with Hicks while Hendriks gets sent back down even those he's had moments where he's been pretty good. It doesn't fit for me. I do think they had to give Hicks some time once he's been up, but much more of this....I just think the different handling of the two situations is odd.
  23. You might be referring to a more reactionary crowd (the same group that might now also be saying Hicks is not major league material) Most critical thinkers are going to take it on a case-by-case basis, while overall the Twins do move players slower through their organization than other teams. On the players in the last couple of years, those brought up on Spring Training numbers and with, at most short stints in Double AA, I've thought they were too quick.
  24. Since Terry Ryan, in terms of evaluation, they have moved players up too quickly and have certainly misrepresented players readiness and skillset tto the public. I think for Hick's sake more than anything else, if he doesn't show signs of life, you have to send him down.
  25. It's one thing if he was crushing AAA and then called up and struggled. It's another thing to have a good (yes, that's really all it was) year in AA and make the jump and then struggle. It might indicate it's not just an "adjustment" period -- there were signs in AA that this could happen (I pointed out his strikeout rate we we first discussed this way back when). It could be a sign they moved him up too fast. I'm not saying they send him down today, but if he shows no improvement, I don't think you can keep him up another series after this. If he shows a little improvement, well, then you decide as you go. How much time for you?
