  1. To risky for me too. Although Butch Wynegar was starting at 19 for the Twins and hit .260. If there were some way to project this kid to hit .260 in 4 years this scenario might be worth the risk. I am not sold on Kohl Stewert either. His videos show him all over the place. Control looks to be an issue. Shipley or Stanek would be much better picks. I guess we can always hope that Houston or Colorado try this scenario and one of the Big 3 drops to us.
  2. Thought Dozier would break out this year. Major disappointment. But so are Parmelee, Hicks, Plouffe. Doesn't help that Willingham and Doumit aren't hitting like last year. So many holes in this team.
  3. Rhett Bollinger thought he had options left. I'll take Walters or Gibson over Worley. He reminded me of Nick Blackburn. No out pitch, no K's, poor control. It had to be done.
  4. Rob Radlosky, now that's a name I remember. He gave up 7 HR's in 8 innings pitched.
  5. Seth is right. It's WHIP. Examples: Peavey Lifetime WHIP 1.175- worst WHIP of 1.423 resulted in 6W 7L 4.52 ERA, Verlander Lifetime WHIP 1.174-worst WHIP of 1.403 resulted in 11W 17L 4.84, C Lee Lifetime WHIP 1.207-worst WHIP 1.521 resulted in 5W 8L 6.29 ERA.
  6. Johan Santanas-good Nick Blackburns-bad is what this tells me.
  7. In this draft you have 4 great arms in Appel, Manaea, Grey and Stanek. Were pretty deep in quality bats that are up and coming. With our history of Gibson and Wimmers both needing a year after surgery I'd like to deepin the pool with one of the above college pitchers. Can you imagine a rotation of Meyer, May, Gibson, Diamond and one of the above a couple of years down the line if they all stayed healthy? I think you can get a pretty good catching prospect in Round 2. Besides Josmil Pinto is looking like a great prospect at catch.
  8. Jeremy, what is your take on MLBTR's report the Twins are negotiating with Reese McGuire, HS-C, out of Washington? You list Okey and Collins as the top two catchers. Why are the Twins focusing on this young man with so many good Pitchers on the board and the two catchers you see with a higher upside? We got burned pretty bad by the last kid we drafted #1 from Washington.
  9. Great take Nick. This is something I noticed also. Worley has to some degree been the victim of bad luck. A good pitch leads to a bloop or a roller ends up in the right spot between Plouffe and Floriman. It has happened a lot. That's why I haven't given up on Worley. His luck has to get better.
  10. Maybe your right Nick. But I am still running out of patience with Hendriks.
  11. Never been a Swarzak fan. But he did pitch well the first time out. To me he is one step better then say a Jeff Manship. But I will give him the benefit of the doubt and hope this is the year he breaks through. When he starts putting up Matt Guerrier numbers then I might change my tune a litte.
  12. I just don't see enough talent with the bat to be an everyday player. At least not with the great group of kids coming up behind him. He's pretty much been passed by Arcia already. He might get a look as a 4th outfielder at some point during the season if injuries hit. If I'm the Twins I hope he does well enough in AAA, that he might be looked at as a platoon option with Parmelee in right if Parmelee struggles against lefties. His chances of making it with the Twins are pretty slim at this point though.
  13. I really enjoy this type of writing. It's alot of fun to look back at the hits and misses. I have to agree with mike wants wins that in this area the Twins need to do better. I remember not many were impressed with the pick of Gutierrez, including me. It looked like a bust from the start. Alot of Twins fans were patient and waiting for him to breakout. Plus he had already had arm trouble. Seemed like to big a gamble for that slot in the draft. We have do better then that when we get a draft pick that high up. It's the only way we continue to be competitive. Hopefully we go for the best player again this year with the Number 4. Sure hoping Apel is available and Boros doesn't scare off the Twins management.
  14. I really see another year where the starting staff is in flux most of the season. We have 3 gimpy arms in Diamond, Pelfrey, and Worley. Our addition of Correria is to be an innings eater but his history would suggest he will be demoted to the bullpen at some point due to ineffectivess and Hendriks sent to AAA for more refinement. I haven't seen the improvement in Hendriks to warrant a spot in the rotation. Still no out pitch and very much suseptible to the long ball. A long look at Deduno, Hernandez, Walters and De Vries (a continued pleasand surprise) needs to be done yet this spring. My starters going North would be Worley, Pelfrey, Correria (only cuz I hafta), DeVries, Deduno. ( Diamond DL) The bullpen isn't that hard to figure out. Perkins-closer. Burton-setup Duensing-LH specialist. Fien should be in as a 7th inning guy. Pressley wins a spot, you can always return him to the Sox later if he falters, Wood-paying him, so he comes North. So the final spot goes to either Roenicke, Robertson, Hernandez, or Burnett. Right now I'd go with Hernandez. LH has done well this spring. Robertson is to inconsistent. Burnett goes back to AAA with his option and poor pitching. Roenicke you pass through wavers and hope for the best.
  15. Let's not forget the fragile health of Morneau, Maurer and Doumit. If one of them goes down, it would sure be nice to be able to insert Thome in the DH spot 4 or 5 times a week. Butera takes up the slack if any of these guys go down. So Floriman and Butera at the bottom of the order is pretty weak. Thome is a pretty good insurance policy.
  16. I can't help but be interested in bringing back Thome. I know he can't run anymore and you'd have to pinch run most of the time. But back in the old days the manager always had a pitcher ready to run for the older-slower guy. ( Remember Smokey Burgess anyone?) I can already see many times where the Twins have two on with two out, in the bottom of the 9th and Escobar or Floriman up to bat. I'd sure like to have a Thome option here. You just can't win to many games late when all you have to send up to pinch hit are Escobar or Butera. Maybe Colabello or Clement can fill that role. But when it comes to hitting in the clutch, I'd take my chances with Jim Thome.
  17. Jeff Clement should be thrilled to hear Gardy say that. PH-1B-Emergency Catcher with Long Ball Power.
  18. Glad you pointed out Matt Harrington Seth. He was offered 4 million once after being the number one overall pick, didn't sign. Changed to Boras as an agent and again refused a 1.2 million dollar offer from the Padres. His arm went bad. All those millions down the drain. I hope Mark Appel reads this story and the comments.
  19. In 1969 a friend and I went along with my father to the Playoff game with Baltimore at the Old Met. They allowed us to park our camper in the lot of the stadium. About an hour after the game we decided to walk back to the players entrance/exit and see if we could get some autographs. Didn't have any luck. So we started walking back to the camper and Rich Reese pulled up in his sports car and asked us if we needed a ride home. We told him that our camper was just down the way. But he did sign our program which I still have to this day. Along with Rich, earlier during batting practice I was able to get autographs from, Bob Allison, Bert Blylyven, Dick Woodson, and Sandy Koufax. He was an NBC announcer back then. Just thought alot of Rich for worrying about a couple of kids. He's my number 1 #1.
  20. I just hope Gibson can be a Kevin Tapani type pitcher. I think he will be. Also very excited at the prospect of a Meyer-May-Gibson-Worley-Hermsen rotation at some point. And then there is Wimmers, Berrios, Hendriks and the other young arms we drafted this year that could factor in the rotation. I just think the future is brighter then it has been in many many years for the Twins. I see this group, along with our young hitters that are not to far away bringing us a World Series around 2016 or 2017.
  21. I just don't like the race card thing. The Twins have always had a philosophy of signing the best "signable player". (ex: Ben Revere) They were a little slow getting established in Venezuela but have been catching up. Years ago the Senators-Twins had a great pipeline in Cuba until Castro shut that off. And some guys just won't play in Minnesota. In 1987 they traded for Don Baylor down the stretch. In 1991 they signed Chili Davis. Santana wanted to go to a bigger market. Plain and simple. But it was the Twins who gave him the shot to do the great things he did. And last but not least, sometimes a white guy is just the better player.
  22. I am ok with Plouffe at third. If he can hit .260, drive in 75 runs, pop 18-20 homers he's an asset. His fielding will get better. He's a former shortshop, so the transition to 3rd will come along. I hate wasting a roster spot on Escobar. He can't hit a lick. And you already have Floriman who will hit .220 to .230. Why don't the Twins pick up Tony Abreu just released by the Royals. He can play 2nd and 3rd. Great offensive numbers throughout his minor league career. And he is a switch hitter. He'd be a much better bench alternative to Escobar.
  23. I certainly would like the Twins to look at Sanchez. If healthy, a big if, he would really add to the Twins offense and cover a position of need. I like Ryan Sweeney too. Slightlly better then average bat and a decent enough fielder. Braden would be ok on a minor league contract. But two surgeries in the last two years make him a longshot at best.
  24. I am certainly looking forward to this years Prospect Handbook. But when Terry Ryan suggested that Deibinson Romero or Mark Sobolewski would push Trevor Plouffe I had to laugh. These guys are not even in Luke Hughes realm. They remind me at best of Larry Wolfe, Brent Gates and Terry Tiffee. If these are the players to push Plouffe, he has no worries about losing his job. If Terry Ryan is serious, he should take a long look at Freddie Sanchez. Otherwise the competition he intends to use as a push to Trevor is a joke.
