  1. Incredibly, the dropped pop up 10 feet in front of home plate was only #9 on ESPN's Top Ten Not Hot list.
  2. "Most exciting" was used twice. Sounds like a phrase that he's been directed to say. I do like "he's playing the living fire out of the game" much better than "battling his tail off".
  3. Anybody else read the hype that is being heaped on Darin Mastroianni? "Mastroianni’s been playing the living fire out of the game down there,'' Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "They told me he’s the most exciting player down there. Terry (Ryan) has been down there watching that team for a week or so. I talked to the manager down there, Gene Glynn. He told me this kid has been playing really well, swinging the bat really well. Probably the most exciting player they have on that baseball team right now, running bases, stealing bases. He can fly. We’ll see. We’ll see how he does.” "Most exciting player". Wow, sounds like Gardy is shilling for management trying to sell tickets.
  4. Clearly not. His fundamentals are wrong on both offense and defense. His judgment on the strike zone is terrible. He's an awful player but he thinks he's A-Rod. John, I liked your take on the transition from focusing on the team to focusing on individual players. The Twins need to work on developing their younger players and what better place than the major leagues with the best coaches in the system. They need to forget about contending for the playoffs and admit they are rebuilding. Maybe this recent spate of maneuvers shows that they finally get it.
  5. Valencia to AAA. Vikings get a new stadium. Pretty good day so far.
  6. Should the Twins 'move on' with Gardenhire? I don't know what this means. Does it mean "Should the Twins go forward with Gardenhire?" Or does it mean should the Twins "move on" to another manager other than Gardenhire? My answer is that the Twins should not fire Gardenhire.
  7. He's 5 for 28 since he joined Oakland. Maybe the Blue Jays closer, Francisco Cordero with his 9.54 ERA and 2.29 WHIP is just a lousy closer and has been demoted to other bullpen duties.
  8. He's 2 for 25 since then, so no, he's not going to build on it. Bench him already!
  9. Is on the DL for the next 3 weeks. YEAH! http://i45.tinypic.com/dq22e0.jpg
  10. http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Signs/ten-on-ten.gif
  11. Who do you consider to be trade pieces? That could build more value? The ones I can think of are Liriano, Span, Carroll, Casilla, Pavano, and Capps. Possibly Morneau. They already have regular jobs. Mauer and Willingham are not going to be traded. Nobody else on the team is worth any trade value. There's no value to build.
  12. Why? The guy is a liability at the plate and in the field. He played in 154 games last year and put up these numbers: .246/.294/.393 while drawing the wrath of Gardy for his shoddy defense. He's not going to get better.
  13. Some guys simply can't hit left-handed pitching. Some guys have trouble with a sinkerball throwing righty. You have to adjust the lineup's strength to the other team's weaknesses (and vice-versa)
  14. What you have is a .240 hitter with occasional power that strikes out 10X as many times as he walks and is fundamentally flawed in the field. We don't need to see what he's got, it's a known quantity.
  15. Shouting? No, and I didn't even hint at that scenario. We don't know how many questions he was asked. Typically the reporters go from one guy to another. The players give a couple of sound bites and move on. It's unlikely that Span was going to be too talkative last night. But let's imagine a couple of scenarios. "Denard, why is Weaver especially hard to hit?" "He's Jered Weaver, man, you know? He's a great pitcher, especially here at home. He had it goin' on tonight." OR "Denard, why is Weaver especially hard to hit?" "He kind of throws across his body, and I think his cross-body motion kind of ... when he lets the ball go sometimes ... the ball’s coming out of the rocks." Why couldn't he have answered like in the first example?
  16. I just think it is lame to make excuses for being no hit because "the ball was coming out of the rock pile". Span is trying to downplay Weaver's performance. Just admit that you were owned. The Twins got 3-hit and shutout on a complete game by Jerome Williams on Monday night. Rock pile to blame there, too? In some ways the Monday night game is more embarrassing than Weaver throwing a no-no.
  17. That's good advice for Denard. Mr. Span, did you hear that?
  18. Whatever. Yeah, I can see that he has a somewhat closed stance to lefties when he completes his throwing motion, but really, "the rock pile did it!" is a lame excuse. Weaver, career: vs. lefties .244 BA vs. righties .225 BA Furthermore a pitcher performing better at home vs. away isn't surprising.
  19. Span, on Weaver's no-hitter: ------------------------------- When you’re off to the kind of start the Twins are, you’ll blame just about anything: Center fielder Denard Span, who went 0 for 4 with a strikeout, hinted that Weaver might be assisted by the rockpile in left-center, which Span said might interfere with a hitter’s field of vision. "He kind of throws across his body, and I think his cross-body motion kind of ... when he lets the ball go sometimes ... the ball’s coming out of the rocks," Span said. "But there’s nothing to take away from his no-hitter. He still pitched a great game. But over the years, you checked the stats, he’s definitely a better pitcher here than he is on the road." In response to a question about whether Weaver was "unhittable," Span said: " I wouldn’t say he’s unhittable. I mean, we didn’t get a hit. We made contact, just didn’t get a hit." http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/baseball/other_mlb/view/20120503twins_manager_gardenhire_says_his_team_played_like_little_leaguers/srvc=home&position=recent -------------------------- Weaver "kind of throws across his body"? He's almost pure over the top with his arm angle. Just tip your cap to Weaver and stop making excuses.
  20. Here's some more quotes from Top Gun:
  21. Four seam fastball with no movement, i.e. a Capper.
  22. I'll always be a Twins fan. I love baseball and they are my hometown team. But lately it's been the death of a thousand cuts. Watching Torii go was hurtful. Trading Santana was a painful one. Garza/Bartlett for Delmon/Brendan left scars. I'm kind of losing enthusiasm. Last year's team basically phoned it in almost every game. There's nothing to get excited about. This team is going to be dreadful for years. It's the mid-90's all over again.
  23. How many pitchers are 5' 9" and weigh 170 lbs.?
  24. You're begging the question. Ben Revere will never hit a HR in the major leagues.
  25. I see his role as a late inning pinch runner, defensive replacement outfielder. I don't see him as a starter.
