  1. Who will throw the first no hitter in 2012? Or who will throw their first no hitter in 2012? In answer to the second question I'll go with Matt Cain or Felix Hernandez.
  2. To panic would imply one had positive expectations of this ballclub. Since I expect them to lose more games than they win, I am not panicking.
  3. It's not working for me. Two solo HRs off Burton. 8-0 Orioles. Fork 'em.
  4. Source for this?
  5. I don't think the Twins want those guys. They tried Jim Hoey and that didn't work out. That probably tainted their view of power arms. They traded Billy Bullock, a big, hard throwing 2nd round pick to the Braves a year ago for Scott Diamond. Diamond is yet another 89-91 mph back of the rotation guy that the Twins were inexplicably enamored with. They had Matt Garza and they traded him. They signed Jason Marquis. Didn't they alter Carlos Gutierrez' style from power pitching to control pitcher? For years the "Twins Way" was to pitch to contact (it still is) and they had this view from the bottom up. Remember minor league pitching coach Rick Knapp? He was all about pitching to contact and keeping walks down. Their recent draft picks are not overpowering pitchers. I think you are right that they've overworked that avenue of success.
  6. That's Leyland for ya. Play guys in less than their prime position. I also see that Leyland's got the speedsters batting in a row: Cabrera, Fielder, and Del Young. You do know that the third baseman only sees about 3 defensive chances per game?
  7. Color Commentator: "It's only Doumit's 3rd start in RF." Yes, a regular RF would have had that ball. But if it's misplayed and gets past you, it's a triple. Can't really blame Doumit for playing it safe in his third game in RF.
  8. The thing that impresses me the most about the Ray's starters--they're all homegrown from the Ray's system. No free agents from other teams, none acquired in trades.
  9. I hope this anthem doesn't catch on. It's only OK.
  10. Twins commercial is a take off on the Big Lebowski. Stars Gardy, Mauer, Willingham, Span, and Big Herbie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4RtPSoFFJg
  11. I'm having a hard time following your argument. You deride Selig for not enforcing PED ban sooner than he did and then you lament that an (alleged) PED user may not make the HOF. What up wid that? IMO, Selig is vulnerable to criticism for adding an extra wild card team per league, the one game playoff among wild card teams, then next year moving Houston to the AL meaning the mandatory interleague game every day, which will inevitably lead to more reliance on the DH, and make it less likely that it would be abolished.
  12. Agree with this. That opening full day on Monday was great. Baseball on TV from noon until past midnight. Nowadays? Tonight's game, which just ended (9:00 pm) is the only game today. Then tomorrow there are only 7 games, only 2 are on TV I can get and boy, I'm just stoked to watch the Nationals/Cubs game. NOT!
  13. Actually, yes I do. That brief clip of Herbie laying out to catch an attempted bunt is priceless.
  14. I understand you perfectly. I just think you are wrong. Single plays frequently are the deciding factor in games. Certainly more often than two times a season. I didn't say the effect was to turn a .500 team into a contender. I said it was worth more than +/- 2 games a season. This is a good point. I remember last year when Leyland started catcher Alex Avila at 3B in an interleague game. Of course he made an error. Or when he overused both his set up man and closer last October and both were unavailable going into Game 5 of the ALCS.
  15. A well timed hit-and-run can win a game and happens many times during the season. Yes, players have to execute, but that is not luck. I dispute your assertion that game-changing managerial decisions amount to 2 games a year. Simply repositioning the defense for particular batters and calling pitches to augment that defense changes the outcomes of games. Intentionally walking a batter and then getting a subsequent double play is good managing in my book. I guess you would call that lucky. I think you are poo-poohing (or aren't aware) of a whole lot of stuff going on behind the scenes.
  16. So when Joe Maddon had Dan Johnson--9 for 90 that year--pinch hit against the Yankees in the bottom of the ninth last Sep 29th, with 2 outs, that was a game the Rays woulda won anyway? Your assertion that any bunt, pinch hit, steal, or hit and run are dumb and meaningless is breathtaking. I take it you don't pay too much attention to the strategy of baseball.
  17. It would be interesting to find out who hit the HRs off Capps. Ah, here we are: Mar 9 Rafael Furcal (averages 1 HR per 55 ABs) Mar 22 Chris Davis (averages 1 HR per 23 ABs) Mar 31 Michael McKenry (2 HRs in 188 ML ABs; avg. 1 HR per 32 ABs in minors) Apr 2 Cody Rogers (0 ML ABs; avg. 1 HR per 32 ABs in minors) Yep, take away Davis and those are scary-ass power hitters that Capps couldn't get out.
  18. Great first post. Welcome to Twins Talk.
  19. You must not pay attention to Jim Leyland's or Ozzie Guillen's bonehead moves. I've attended games that Guillen has lost for the Sox.
  20. Clutch hitting exists; clutch hitters do not.
  21. So professional athletes can simply will themselves to be better when they need to be? Like turning on a switch, eh? "I don't need to be very good today, but tomorrow, hoo boy!"
  22. I've never liked Capps. He's going to be terrible (again.)
  23. I haven't seen any spammers. Is this a solution looking for a problem? Or do the mods remove any spam as soon as they see it?
  24. Gotta disagree with this as well. The situation dictates the strategy. For example: Tie game or down by one run in an away ballpark, 6th inning, no outs. Casilla's on 2nd, Span's on 1st. Carroll coming up to bat with Mauer on deck, Morneau in the hole. I'm bunting. Think about it. In fact, I would criticize Gardy for NOT bunting in this situation.
