  1. I don't collect the McFarlane figures but I think they are pretty cool. I have a baseball card collection that goes back to the 1950's but I haven't added to it since 1992. I think the next figure should be Ichiro.
  2. I hear ya. If the Twins sign Inge it will be as if they planted a giant flag in the ground marked "Yes, We've Sunk This Low."
  3. From the caption under photos from the article: From inside his fourth-floor apartment across the Midtown North police precinct, New Yorker Matt Miller noticed a knot of photographers and reporters gathering on the street this morning. The unemployed English teacher grabbed a Canon digital, and began shooting as Young emerged about 11 a.m., said Miller, 42. Formerly a Royals fan, he said he had to ask about the man escorted by uniformed officers. His fiancé is from Michigan, Miller said. Her brother is a Tigers fan. “I thought she might be impressed,” Miller said, chuckling.
  4. Not sure about better hitter. Inge's career line: .234/.304/.387; Valencia's is .265/.308/.400. Inge's strikeout rate is 26%; Valencia is about 18%. It would seem that Valencia sees the ball better. I'm not sure how you would prove he's a better fielder. They look pretty similar.
  5. Inge or Valencia? Valencia or Inge? Inge or Valencia? Valencia or Inge? Inge or Valencia? Valencia or Inge? [brain goes into recurrent loop contemplating the choice, self destructs...]
  6. Provus is excellent. Gladden is OK when he's doing color, not very good when he does play-by-play. Gladden has the tendency to use the same phrases over and over never varying them to give the listener a fresh perspective. For example, when someone is not a very speedy base runner Gladden will say, "he doesn't run well" or "he doesn't run all that well." Hey how about saying, "he's doesn't have the fastest set of wheels on the team" or "he lacks running speed". "Doesn't run well" conjures up images of Monty Python's Twit of the Year competition in my mind. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqObJtGrKaA
  7. My bad, I was not aware that Luke Hughes had been cut. Liriano could go to the pen but then he has no trade value come July. He needs to get his act together as a starter. Who plays 3B? Please don't say Valencia...
  8. Forget about the "Twins Way" , Valencia is not playing baseball the proper way. Any team is going to tell their hitters to go the other way if the pitcher is working the outside corner. Any team is going to tell their infielders to use proper footwork and get in front of the ball. It's just fundamental baseball. Why would another team figure they can get Valencia to listen to them when he's been doing things his own way for (at least) three years?
  9. I agree with you that they are reacting quicker and making more moves, but my impression is that they are nibbling at the edges. Plouffe playing for Casilla is a nice move but I don't believe that Casilla feels that his starting job is in jeopardy, he's had what, four tries at it so far? They need to do something that will really send a message. I would suggest that they: 1. Send Liriano down to AA or even A ball if he stinks again. Bring Diamond up, he's 4-0 with a 1.07 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP. Could he do worse than Liriano? 2. Send Valencia down to Rochester if he continues to be un-coachable. Play Burroughs. Bring Luke Hughes up and work him out at 3B. 3. If Capps fails again (only a matter of time) promote Perkins to closer. Make some significant noise, send some real messages. If I were a player and I saw how much failure someone else can endure with hardly any consequences, why should I be worried about my status? Coupled with last year's practice of players telling the coaching staff they would rather not play there is little reason for players to feel their job is threatened.
  10. This guy is toast. He cannot take instruction. His fundies with his footwork on defense, his body positioning, his tendency to back hand balls he could get in front of, continued insistence on pulling the ball, taking his failures at the plate with him to the field--the guy is un-coachable. He won't be playing third base for the Twins much longer.
  11. This sort of a post just kills me. As if hitters somehow can will themselves to be better hitters with RISP. Ooo--there's a guy on third, time to summon up my special hitting abilities to drive in runs. I don't use this special hitting ability unless there are guys on base, kind of saving it for those situations.
  12. From the "Let's Complain about Gardenhire" thread: http://twinsdaily.com/showthread.php?666-The-2012-quot-Complain-About-Gardy-quot-Thread&p=6831&viewfull=1#post6831

  14. EXACTLY. He also likes to try to back hand balls he could get in front of. The guy is in the major leagues so I doubt he's suddenly going to learn to fix these problems.
  15. Just look at his mechanics and his footwork. He's terrible. I don't know. Who's playing third base at the AAA level for the Rays, the Yankees, the Red Sox, the Mets, the Marlins, etc. Those teams are set at 3B. I'm sure there are others.
  16. He batted .246/.294/.383 last year in 564 ABs. Is that a decent enough sample size for ya? This is what he is. And no, I don't want to settle for a .240 hitter with 12 HRs at 3B. According to my eyeballs, he sucks. I said nothing about paying an older free agent guy. I said there's got to be someone, anyone else out there. Some other team's AAA player that is blocked at the big league level. Anything. I wouldn't want to live with that 'production' for another 2 months. He's not going to get much better.
  17. Valencia is, at best, a AAA third baseman. You realize he's hitting .218/.228/.291, very Butera like numbers. Plus he's got 1 walk and 16 strikeouts AND 2 errors in 44 chances. There's got to be another option than trotting those numbers out every day.
  18. Mauer is earning $23M a year because he is a catcher, and one that can hit .320 - .330. Corner infielders that hit 15 HR a year would not be getting $23M a year.
  19. Isn't Sano slotted to play 3B? Why would you want to move Mauer from behind the plate for one year to address a position that will have a solution in 2014?
  20. Does anybody know what they base their conclusions for Win Probabilities on? Seems kind of arbitrary to me. How can they assign a -16% to anything?
  21. The game I watched had a final score of 7-6.
  22. The MN state legislature sub-committee voted down the latest Viking stadium proposal, meaning it's likely dead for 2012. The Vikings are starting to posture themselves as if to threaten to move the team. So if the Vikings leave Minnesota, say they go to L.A., which NFL team would you follow? I'll start. I think I'll start rooting for the Broncos. Has nothing to do with Peyton Manning. I have a friend in Denver that's a rabid fan of the Broncos and I've kind of gotten interested in them over the past few years. Tebow's miracle run to the playoffs was a nice story to get into. Otherwise, I'm not sure. I used to claim the Eagles as my second favorite team (I liked to watch Brian Westbrook play) but they've kind of fallen out of favor. So I guess it's the Broncos.
  23. Just heard "Crazy Train" by Ozzy when Doumit walked up to hit in today's game.
  24. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Matt Cain thought about it all right, well aware he had yet to allow a baserunner as he piled up outs. The Giants ace has never thrown a no-hitter at any level, so he pondered that this might just be his day to do it - and with all the hype of the home opener, no less. He nearly pulled it off, until the opposing pitcher spoiled a most impressive bid. James McDonald became the lone baserunner of the afternoon for Pittsburgh. <holds finger and thumb one inch apart, Maxwell Smart voice: "Missed it by that much...">
  25. I park in a lot at 2nd Ave. N. and 2nd St. N. It's $5.00. One block closer to Target Field the parking lots get $10.00. The nice thing for me is I can get on 394 right there on Washington and 3rd Ave. and be on my way home fairly quickly.
