I kind of like those multi-inning relievers."' in any event, if the bullpen had been addressed properly, it wouldn't be necessary (assuming it is, which I question)..

    Problem is, they don't have plenty of BETTER starters, so it hurts the 2016 team by having inferior options in the rotation. Second, they need good relievers because they did nothing to address the bullpen, the self-proclaimed #1 priority in the offseason. And yes, it is unfair to May, who did nothing to deserve the demotion last year to begin with. You say boo-hoo cry me a river, I say unfair is unfair even for professional ball players. These guys work hard most of their lives to get to the show and their effort shouldn't be minimalized because you think they should just be happy with having an inferior role.

    No surprise at all. He was never in competition for a spot, regardless of what the FO said.. This was obvious even before TR did nothing to improve the bullpen this offseason. What a waste of talent..

    I hope Murphy does as well, but I like Hicks and want him to do well too.

    Yeah, I know that. I think he will be eventually, if not some time this year then next year. Ellsbury is injury prone and Beltran is a FA next year.

    Yeah, it's amazing how many times our announcers like to point out how walking the first batter of an inning is so horrible. My question always is, 'How is it any worse than giving up a single (not to mention a 2B, 3B or HR). Why single out the walk as blasphemy? Perhaps it's the delusion that a walk is always the fault of the pitcher as opposed to sometimes the result of a very good plate appearance?

    Honestly, I'm not sure Rosario would have to pull a Santana to show he's not a sure fire LF (or starter at all). He wasn't nearly the offensive force Santana was when Santana posted the unsustainable BABIP in 2014. 21 LF in baseball had 450 or more PAs. His OBP was like .289. 20th out of 21. He had a 98 wRC+. That tied him with Revere for 16th. And he also had a fairly high BABIP which will need to be watched (not 2014 Santana high, but still high). Having said that, he finished tied for 10th out of 21 in WAR. So if he walks a bit more, Ks a bit less, even a drop in BABIP won't hurt him too much. Defense has to stay awesome.

    This site has had a ton of Mauer bashing on it for quite some time. He's constantly been slammed no matter what or who the thread is about. Finding a reason to slam Mauer and blame him and/or his contract for our woes is like a sport in here. Yes, finally a comment was made by the powers that be that maybe enough is enough in regards to him until something new to slam him about comes along. Let's not act as if it's never been allowed. He's taken more grief than all other Twins players combined on this site.

    Wasn't meant that way. I was just pointing out that it's not clear that Rosario is a sure fire starting type player based on the stat you used to say he was. I can see both sides of the argument myself. I think I'll just wait to see how he does this year, myself. He's a starter for us this season, regardless. At least to start the season. Even if all he ends up being is a 4th OF, 4th OFs have value too. Especially quality defensive guys like Dyson. Rosario could be that guy since a big chunk of his WAR came from defense. And only 3 LF had more DRS and two of them had WAY more innings out there in LF.

    I am not sure what is interesting about that specifically. There were only 63 qualifying position players/DH at 3.0 or higher, so KC had more than average. Twins had one, Dozier, who would have been 4th on the Royals. And overall, 4 starting position players and a DH above 2.0 is quite good. And it's not my solid starter metric. You quoted WAR in your post category and Fangraphs labels WAR categories not me.

    Can't assume that's true, since WAR goes up and down during a season, not just up. Only thing you can say is if he continued to perform exactly the same way, he would have had about 2.1 WAR, but that assumes he would have performed exactly the same way. Still, a WAR at 2.1 is nice (especially for rookie), but that is just barely considered a solid starter as opposed to a role player (2-3=solid starter, 1-2=role player).

    '3) May wasn't pitching particularly well as a starter. He had a mid-4.00s ERA and got shelled some. I think we all saw glimpses of a bright future so that’s not to say he was awful, just that he didn’t make a great case to be the best guy for right that moment.' May was pitching the best in the rotation before he got sent to the pen. He had the highest WAR, the best FIP, the most Ks/9 IP, the 2nd best BB/9. The problem was having a very high BABIP against. Wouldn't expect that to continue.

    Kepler is the prospect I am most excited to see in the majors for an extended time.

    If he could improve his OBP to consistently be in the .330s or higher, he'd be a very valuable player with the defense he's shown so far.

    If you believe Hunter, he's given us a good indication that Sano in the OF is gonna be quite the ride, and not in a good way. Molitor doesn't seem convinced in the comments he's given. And I think there's more to the OF than just speed and athleticism. I highly, highly doubt he's even close to average out there with his size and complete inexperience in the OF. We will see though, clearly, since that's the plan

    'The reason for trading Plouffe, future cost. He is still worth his salary this season (we hope). But is he a $10 million player?' 10M a year, in today's game, isn't that much for a starting caliber veteran. Plouffe has been worth 20M+ or more for the last two seasons. I have zero doubt he'll be worth his 7M+ salary this year.

    What are the starting position questions? The only one I can think of is whether or not they keep Buxton at CF.
