  1. Why don't we wait to see what Dozier's contract is first. Could very well be team friendly as well. Not sure we need to worry too much about the money for awhile. The kids so many are expecting to be superstars aren't due for raises for a long time. Like the three that haven't even made it to the majors yet.
  2. The digital age has empowered people to be more of an a-hole than they would be if they had to face the person they were talking to. Most of the time, they think they can do it with complete anonymity and without any repercussion. Sometimes, as Schilling has proven, that's not always the case. IMO, what he did, was a very good thing. While Schilling seems to be a jerk a good amount of time in his public life, his family doesn't deserve to be collateral damage
  3. Just because he's being extended doesn't mean they will keep him. They didn't keep Span. Seems a whole lot of worrying for nothing.
  4. exactly. His career wRC+ of 131 would have put him tied for 7th in the majors last year for 1Bs. His wRC+ of 143 in 2013 would have but him 5th last year, a hair below Miguel Cabrera. His normal bat plays just fine it 1B and if his defense is above average he's a very good 1B option even without the HRs.
  5. Mauer mostly batted 2nd in 2013. Do you think Mauer's RBI totals might have been affected by having our leadoff guys being 29th out of 30 MLB teams in OBP and 11th out of 15 AL teams in OBP from our #9 batters? Yes, obviously, the concussion happened that ended his season, but before that, when the guys in front aren't getting on base, it's hard to knock them in. In fairness, even with not enough Ops withRISP due to runners not getting on base in front of him, he also hit horribly with RISP that year. Then last year he had an OPS in the .900s with RISP...
  6. How do singles not bring in guys with RISP? And if they don't, does that say more about the runners themselves in scoring position and/or the 3B coach because a single with RISP to the OF should be scoring guys in scoring position. And he has a career .479 slg% with RISP? How is that just a ton of singles?
  7. until Escobar dives head first into 1B on a possible single (or even a clear single to the OF) he'll never be better than Punto :-)
  8. yes, I understand the strike zone is being called more accurately (due to MLB providing umpires pitchf/x info and letting them know they'll be graded on the accuracy of calling the strike zone based on that info). That doesn't mean an adjustment doesn't need to be made because if it's called one way for most of his career and it just keeps expanding, that takes time. But yes, the approach by MLB batters should change. Also, I imagine part of the increase in his K rate last year was the concussion. And MLB recognizes the issue and will look to address the strike zone in 2016. MLB has changed the strike zone a few times and the last time the strike zone got lower. Maybe they should change it back.
  9. yes, a numbers translator, exactly. Talk to the players and let them know what the numbers are, what they mean, and what they can do to work on them.
  10. I couldn't agree more.
  11. I'm definitely buying. He was having a great 2013 before the concussion and we started seeing more of the regular Mauer in the 2nd half of 2014 as he moved farther away from it. Not quite himself, but moving that way. I think he will be close to normal in 2015 and will be even better in 2016 after MLB addresses the called strike zone that has expanded over the last 5 years. Strikeouts are up all across baseball, not just him, and so we'll see how it goes when baseball addresses that.
  12. you're right and I deleted the post because of that.
  13. Billy Beane, the As GM, was a 1st round pick of the Mets. He was a guy with all the tools who people thought would be a superstar. Like many hyped toolsy prospects, he never came close to living up to expectations.
  14. Career FIP of 4.21 (4.30 in 2013, 4.69 last year), gives up more hits than IP, strikes out 6.5 per 9 IP. All pitchers need a good defense, some more than others to be even decent. He desperately needs one.
  15. Is everyone saying 'don't write him off' also saying start him off in the majors this year? I know I'm not.
  16. I hope this still-young man just explodes this year. So many want to write him off, but he's the same age as Meyer, who so many feel is going to be awesome.
  17. We will see if he has a bounceback year in performance. I'm optimistic he will.
  18. I think he will. I find it hard to believe he hit as well as he did in 2012 and 2013 and in one year just fell so far off the map. Doesn't seem to make sense to me. Doesn't make sense to believe it's a normal age drop off (especially at his age) to go from a wRC+ in the 140s (like he had in 2013 prior to the concussion), to what his overall season was last year ( wRc+ of 106). So yeah, IMO, no reason at all to doubt that the concussion in 2013 had an effect on his 2014. There seems to be plenty of study to show that the longer people are out with the concussion, the longer it takes to get back to normal. Seems as the 2014 season went on, he was starting to come around and his 2nd half gives hope that's the case. I imagine he plays 130 or so games, with a wRc+ in the 130s. (and for those who like OPS, around .830 or so).
  19. I was wondering why this article was even a thread here but your post explains it....
  20. List might have just been for qualifying OF. Santana didn't have enough PAs to do that. Santana's WAR was 3.2 and his wRC+ was in the 130s.
  21. You made me laugh quite hard with this comment. Thanks for that! Yeah, I think we saw Mauer coming back to normal in the 2nd half of last season and I think he'll be close to normal, and maybe even all the way back to normal, this year. Our list of problems doesn't have him on it, IMO.
  22. I look forward to watching Lorenzo Cain breakout more (reminds me of Hunter's game during his first Twins tour) and I wonder what it would have taken to get Dyson from KC.
  23. I like this policy and I think it's sad there even needs to be a policy like this to begin with.
  24. I hate it when baseball players get the words wrong - Crash Davis, Bull Durham 1988 :-)
