  1. Good call. That DOES seem to be the precedent sent.
  2. This thread should provide a ton of fun, Mauer-bashing posts. Better find some popcorn, :-)
  3. yes, nothing sells a point better than bringing up a mother's basement :-) What parameters are you going to allow for the challenge? Do they all have to have nerd insults? ;-)
  4. Arizona Diamondbacks - 71.5-under Atlanta Braves - 73.5-under Baltimore Orioles - 82.5-over Boston Red Sox - 86.5-over Chicago Cubs - 82.5-over Chicago White Sox - 81.5-under Cincinnati Reds - 77.5-under Cleveland Indians - 84.5-over Colorado Rockies - 71.5-over Detroit Tigers - 84.5-over Houston Astros - 75.5-under Kansas City Royals - 81.5-over Los Angeles Angels - 88.5-over Los Angeles Dodgers - 92.5-under Miami Marlins - 81.5-under Milwaukee Brewers - 78.5-under Minnesota Twins - 71.5-under New York Mets - 81.5-under New York Yankees - 81.5-over Oakland Athletics - 81.5-over Philadelphia Phillies - 68.5-under Pittsburgh Pirates - 84.5-over San Diego Padres - 84.5-under San Francisco Giants - 84.5-over Seattle Mariners - 86.5-under St. Louis Cardinals - 88.5-under Tampa Bay Rays - 78.5-over Texas Rangers - 78.5-over Toronto Blue Jays - 83.5-over Washington Nationals - 93.5-over Tie breaker 1: The two AL WC teams will be: Tigers, As Tie breaker 2: The two NL WC teams will be: Pirates, Cardinals
  5. I agree, the parameter you set (box score stuff, only) is pretty much useless for determining who the best offensive performers are, but it was your challenge :-)
  6. Info found outside of a box score might by useless to you, but that doesn't mean it actually is useless or that it's useless to people answering your question. You probably should have rephrased your challenge . Instead of just writing this: 'I also challenge anyone to name 10 American League outfielders who had better offensive seasons than Hunter did last year.' you maybe should have added, 'but when you do so, only use archaic information even though you know a good chunk of it doesn't really tell us much about the players actual ability.' I know it seems wordy, but parameters need to be set. :-)
  7. And Cistulli named Funkhouser top starter this week and top draft eligible pitcher this week again. Two weeks in a row.
  8. Because if you just look at just offense, add in leadership, and blow off defensive stats as hocom, the Hunter signing makes more sense? Heck, practically a bargain :-) And remember, he was worth over 12M in 2013. So it's possible he bounces back to that or close. I wouldn't count it out, honestly.
  9. Could be all that important mentoring of Trout took it's toll and affected Hunter's own defense. :-)
  10. In fairness, he said offensively. You used WAR, which incorporates the horrific and unreliable defensive stat called UZR :-) Psychics, Palm Readers, UZR... If you use wRC+, there are still 12 qualifying guys out of 27 that were better. If you go to 400 PAs or more, there were 41 guys in which he ranked 16th, so now we have 15 guys who had better offensive seasons. :-)
  11. Cuddy had to in 2011 with us :-( In any event, the best thing for good chemistry is winning. If you're getting pounded all the time for years, that takes it's toll and things aren't going to be all great in the clubhouse or dugout.
  12. That's an appeal to authority argument. Are you under the impression he always makes the right call or makes the right assessment? Cause, really, if you don't believe that why say it sometimes and not others during a debate about an issue? It really only holds weight if you use it across the board. Did you say that when he signed Pelfrey not once but twice and when he signed Correia or Marquis? He's going to get things right and wrong. Saying Ryan for sure knows better than all the guys sitting on their computer as an argument, I don't know, when clearly those people behind the computer have gotten some things right that he's gotten wrong. Like Pelfrey, Correia, Marquis, just to name a few.
  13. I was always more comfortable in RF too. My glove hand is on the side of the line (since I'm right handed) and since I had a lot of experience reading slices off the bat, having the glove on that hand helped me with balls down the RF line as opposed to having to cross over my body on slices to the LF from batter like Mauer.
  14. For those who but into WAR, Hunter was worth 1.8M last year, hopefully we get closer to the 2013 version which said he was worth 12M+. http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=731&position=OF#value
  15. This is good info and it's why our rotation has the largest gap (by a good chunk), in the majors between FIP and ERA.
  16. Interesting. There were 184,873 PA in 2013. You have accounted for about half. There were 37,072 PA of RH hitter versus LH pitchers, and 66,069 PA of RH versus RH. 103,141 PA by RH hitters. There were 16,134 PA of LH hitter versus LH pitchers and 65,598 PA of LH hitter versus RH pitcher. 81,732 PA by LH hitters. Notice that the numbers for LH batter and the numbers for RH batters add up to the exact PAs that occurred in 2013. That's over 21,000 more PAs for RH hitters in 2013. Fangraphs filter is pretty easy to use. http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=0&type=0&season=2013&month=57&season1=2013&ind=0&team=0,ss&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0
  17. 7,000 plays is a good chunk, and yes both have balls sliced to their spot, but like I said, more right handers than left handed hitters so RF get more balls that are slicing than LF get. The numbers of overall balls hit to LF and RF doesn't mean anything in this argument because it's about the flight of the ball not the amount of balls hit. Obviously RH hitters will hit balls to all fields as will LH batter, but how many were slicing to LF and how many were slicing to RF, because we're concerned about the difficult plays, not cans of corn. When did I say Arcia, a very young player, was likely to not improve defensively? If I gave that impression, if I certainly didn't mean to cause I certainly don't believe that. If I believed that I wouldn't be talking about his defensive development. Meaning I wouldn't be saying if he's going to go back to RF after Hunter is done we should keep him in RF to develop, would I? I'd say something like who cares if he's moved all over he's never gonna get better anyway.
  18. I don't believe they are, some do. I think RF is harder which is why you usually see older CFs who were quality defenders but who have lost a step move to RF instead of LF. The flights of the ball are, for a good deal of batted balls, completely different. Most batters are right handed so when they hit to LF the fielder isn't dealing with a ball slicing away as happens a right handed batter hits it to RF. It's a truer flight in LF when a righty hits it there. So, there are more difficult plays normally in RF.

I said if the team plans to play him there in the future, he should stay there, regardless of whether or not Hunter is here so he can develop there.
  20. Well, if they move Arcia back to RF whenever the time comes when Hunter is no longer playing, we'll know that's why for sure. And if it is, they've delayed Arcia's development time which is what last year and the next couple years should be about. If Arcia is going to be our RF for years to come, and if Hunter was told this, then wouldn't we want the new leader of the team to say to the team something like, 'thanks for offering to move him to LF so I could stay where I'm comfortable but, for the good of Arcia's development , I will move to LF'?
  21. UZR takes into account ballpark and adjusts for it, but fine. We're not going to get anywhere.
  22. And do we think Arcia will eventually be moved back to RF and, if so, why mess up his development in RF by moving him to LF?
  23. Well, as we all know, anyone who believes in that sabermetric stuff never played the game :-)
  24. Well, like I've said many times buddy, I look at defenders in 4 categories. Great, Good, Bad and Horrible. Doesn't matter to me if some of the other names were slightly more horrible or not, horrible is horrible. And remember Willingham played LF (as did Delmon for us) so he's being compared to LF who for the most part, are the worst OFs of the 3 spots. If Willingham had been moved to RF, he'd likely be at the bottom since he'd be compared to RF who are normally better than LF. It's like how a guy can be a below average CF, get moved to RF, and be considered very good.
  25. I wasn't actually referencing last year for all those guys, more just about their overall time spent with is when they were Twins. Most of us had our eye tests tells us that while they played for us, they were horrible defenders. And why would it be hard to believe a guy who turned 39 last season might be one of the worst defenders in the game now? Is it because he used to be a great defender for us in 2007? That was a long time ago in baseball playing time. He has declined a lot defensively the last couple years and one SHOULD expect that. How many people his age are still good defenders?
