  1. Don't most teams have an older player on their roster that skews the average age of the players on their team as well?
  2. Actually it's your lack of understanding that is absurd. Mauer's contract extended to what would have been his free agent years. The high priced years that were the point of contention are what would have been free agent years. So looking at what what he produced in WAR and then looking at what the average cost of one WAR was worth on the free agent market during those years makes sense. Sorry you can't see that.
  3. He was worth over 20M in both 2012 and 2013..Even in his horrible 2014, he was worth over 10M. Perhaps it's just a lack of understanding what's valuable that leads you to look at a couple stats and be so disappointed in the player's salary. There's plenty of ways to provide value other than HRs. Did it drive you nuts when he was providing crazy value and getting paid WAS LESS than what he was worth or is it only when you see owners spending what you perceive to be too much that makes you nuts?
  4. This is the 3rd offseason that our starting pitching has been labeled as bound to be better.
  5. yes, I get all that. I was not surprised by the results Jeff posted at all.
  6. Jeff Sullivan of Fangraphs occasionally writes for Fox Sports in a column called Just A Bit Outside. Today he pointed out the the Twins project to have the 3rd hardest strength of schedule in baseball. Of course, it's just a bunch of math hocom, so nothing to concern ourselves over, I'm sure.
  7. I think I've gotten to the point where my posting about Dozier's possible extension has well exceeded my caring on the subject.
  8. So if Meyer starts putting up 3-5 WAR seasons, you won't want to extend him.
  9. http://m.twins.mlb.com/news/article/111418386/general-manager-terry-ryan-believes-twins-can-contend-in-2015
  10. still a bullet off the bat and a run scored.
  11. normally that's an out turned by Pedroia.
  12. You picked the best young player to hit the game in decades as the type of player you'd extend. So, basically, you wouldn't extend the majority of players drafted out of college, because college players tend to hit their arbitration years around the same time Dozier will. Graduate at 22, spend 3-4 years in the minors, we're talking 27, 28.
  13. There are plenty of teams that are seeing the real value of signing all types of players prior to reaching their arbitration years. Since there's only one Trout, seems we don't need to point to only him and say since Dozier isn't him the team shouldn't extend him He was a mid 4 WAR guy last year in his 2nd full season and he was almost a 3 WAR guy in his first. If he just stays at an average of 3 WAR in the next 4 years he is worth extending now.
  14. In fairness, I wasn't here when we got Suzuki, but I had issues with his whole game when we got him and continued to have issues as we extended him.
  15. I guess we will see. I like the idea of being able to hit the ball where it's pitched. And those walks only continue if the pitchers are missing the outer half. I liked his climb in the OBP category in the 2nd half, myself. Either way, it's not stupid to discuss it as some suggest it is.
  16. So if he's not extended he will hit arbitration at 28. Why is this a knock on him or somehow an indictment on his abilities? This happens a lot with players drafted out of College if they get to arbitration. Meyer is 25, he'll be 28 or 29 before he's eligible too. And while he may not be a superstar, if he continues to play the way he has the last two years, especially last year, he is extremely valuable. Those guys don't grow on trees and we currently have a dearth of players in that category.
  17. Seems that if a guy is pull crazy then pitching him becomes easier. It was well pointed out Dozier is pull happy in the first half last year and in the 2nd half his slugging % dropped under .400 (though his OBP got better, so that's something). I have always been a big Dozier fan, basically since being drafted. He is my favorite current Twin, but whenever a weakness is so clearly out there, it's not stupid to discuss it or be concerned about it. Opposing team scouts and, gasp, SABR guys are going to be telling the team about players' weaknesses at the plate and pitchers are going to try and exploit them. I'm hoping the team and Dozier have looked into this and are working to adjust his approach.
  18. 'I'm curious about who he should have chosen instead. His other choices were Fryer, Herrmann, Rohlfing, and Pinto as I recall. And Pinto was not an option really. Because pitch framing :-)' your post here is funny because, yeah, Gardy didn't really choose Suzuki. Suzuki was put upon him by Ryan, so my use of the word 'chosen' was off. How about this: When your starting catcher is horrific at framing, maybe pointing out Pinto's flaws in framing might not be overly good because, apparently, the guy who signed Suzuki didn't care much about the skill to begin with?
  19. 'I''m just looking at it as Vargas > Mauer > Plouffe. So ditch the worst guy, shift the middle guy to that hole, and make room for the big guy.' Wow, the positionless Vargas in his 1/3 of a MLB season, is already better than Mauer? Mauer has an off year after a concussion. The season before he had a wRC+ in the 140s. Vargas (who is pure DH material) and his wRC+ of a 114 is already better than Mauer who nornally sits in the 130-140 area for wRC+ and can play some defense? And better than Plouffe, who can actually play a position and has comparable offense? Anyone remember Parmellee's first time in teh majors?
  20. So the scouts and the coaches who see real issues with his defense are ALL wrong? That would be interesting. Braun, with as great of an offensive rookie season he had, was so bad at 3B that he kept getting replaced in late innings and then was moved to the OF after his rookie season. Still a very valuable player but the Brewers knew what had to be done. On the flip-side, teams kept Reynolds too long at 3B, so between his horrible defense and the strikeouts, the HR and RBI couldn't sway people to believe he was great. If Sano is that bad on defense at 3B, and he could be, I hope the Twins move him to a corner OF spot.
  21. I think people enjoy the game in different ways. Maybe some like watching good-great defense. Maybe some think defense is much more important than some others think. Maybe some prefer baseball players who can play both quality offense and defense. Perhaps you just care about the home runs. That's fine. Telling people to shut up because you believe he will do the part you care about seems, um, intolerant. And I would hope the Twins would be smart enough to keep a quality player like Plouffe, but never know. I don't think he gets trade this season.
