  1. Not trying to sell anything as failures. Just stating facts. To the other extreme we might also want to let them actually accomplish something before we crown their asses.
  2. Just to clarify: The 3 teams you identified as examples of using this two tiered approach, while admittedly trending in a positive direction--at least one of them is, and lets be honest one of the others is two games over .500 with a $223 million payroll, have thus far combined for ZERO World Series rings using this approach.
  3. I'd call 2018 a best case scenario.
  4. Or they could be the same as in 2012 when he was a fairly serviceable big league pitcher. Guess that's why they play the games.
  5. You seem to have actually missed my original point which was that like the 84-87 timeframe a lot of things would still need to happen between 2015 and 2018 or whatever point this team contends again and that those with great expectations based on 2015 would be in for a rude awakening. Case in point: 2016.
  6. McPhail was hired in August, 1985. Pretty sure he would not have gone (149 games) into the 1986 season with an "interim" manager
  7. I feel good too. Can't hit either.
  8. Cue "Dueling banjos." Here's a thought: Instead of blaming a 22 year old kid for not running with the instruction of "learn a new position in the off-season", we lay (at least a portion of) the blame at the feet of the 62 year old kid(s) who decided that was a good idea in the first place.
  9. I might bite on that being a reason for the first management change but not the 2nd.
  10. I see last year as 1984 for the Twins. A team which had struggled for years had a decent season and got a taste of contention. What folks tend to forget is that between the end of 84 and the start of 87 we fired 2 managers and brought in a new GM. Molly, meet Slick Gardner.
  11. What I'm saying is guys without elite velocity generally end up being either Maddux or Blackburn. We can certainly hope for Maddux but reality is usually Blackburn. It also usually takes a few years to realize what's happening too.
  12. Cuz extra points are too easy. Worked for the NFL.
  13. My point is we better be hoping he's closer to Maddux than Blackburn, Baker, Slowey.
  14. Like teams getting a second or third look at him?
  15. And Duffy's won't second or third time around the league?
  16. Get back to me in a few years and let me know if he's Greg Maddux or (insert middle of the road Gardy era Twins starter here)
  17. I've been wondering about that. And yet we seem to think that Duffy can?
  18. And in the last 6 times the Wolves have had an opening or every time the Wild have had an opening......????
  19. We don't KNOW that a call wasn't made. We assume. And we all know how that works out.
  20. If you want to make comparisons, compare the 2015 Twins to the 1984 Twins. After years on not competing both teams broke thru and got a taste of what being competitive was like. Then try to remember that between 1984 & 1987 they fired two managers and brought in a new GM. Next move(s)?
  21. Maddon was the rare guy who was in a position to call his shot, whether right away or waiting a year. When is the last time a guy in that position who even bothered to answer a call from a Minnesota area code?
  22. I wouldn't say they are INSISTANT on hiring a manger with no experience. It just so happens the guy they hired (who much if not most of the fan base currently griping also thought was the right guy-even as recently as 8 months ago) didn't have any.
  23. And yet Kingman's pretty much remembered as a joke of a player who did one thing well. But you may be right-I may be selling Kingman short. Especially when I compare his numbers to another current Twin who mostly seems to be able to do one thing reasonably well.
  24. If Gardenhire's being groomed as anything it might be as a potential manager. The current guy in that spot seems to be among the struggling. Don't see him being groomed as a potential GM.
  25. Slice .196 any way you want. Schmidt hit for power and raised his career BA to .267. Had he not done that he would be remembered as Dave Kingman,
