I will agree that he should have won the Cy in 2005. It shouldn't have been close but the advanced metrics were mostly shunned at the time. Now we look back at King Felix and his Cy and can see if the same standards were applied he would have gotten it. HOF? I would argue post season success. Every one of those players you name above won a World Series except Max Scherzer and Kershaw (Maddux won one with the Braves right?). That is why I would suggest he would not get one...right or wrong, I am not sure the case is closed.

Article: Winter Meetings - Search For A Starter
rghrbek replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I hope there is some truth to the rumor Seth posted...however, in my opinion, there is no way the Pirates asked for that little in return... All 3 unproven and the only pitcher is a reliever? If it's true the Twins should have done it by now. Ripped up the arb years and pay him 4/years 66 mil...Nice raise over the arb years- 169 replies

I don't know if they are crushing it. However, I do like how they managed the roster (after about half the year last year). I don't wanna rip on Terry or what he did but his second stint wasn't proactive more reactive. These guys are doing what they should when it comes to roster management. They also appear to have an eye for the future. I think what many of us want to see is what they will do in free agency and then what they do with the roster. Nick, I do have to agree what they have done so far, after a year of assessing, is positive. I'm all in.

Article: The Twins Should Be Shopping Ervin Santana
rghrbek replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Nick, Thank you for writing what will probably be a very unpopular question. Ervin is rock solid, had a great year. If anyone looks at his advance stats over his career, this is not a person who will probably duplicate another year quite like this. I love Ervin, think he's a gamer, but I like this whole line of thinking. If the Twins are sincere about adding starting pitching that is younger and potentially better, I am on board with this. I will say Phil Huges' year might have been better, and he was much younger (without the track record of Erv), but it was a great year to contradict what you said about Erv. I do think regression although not huge is likely. If we can get a high end reliever and a good prospect I would be down with this. Now, that means we sign somebody young with upside in the off season. Thats a big if... I just think our roster needs some outside of the box thinking and that's why I like this article. Gunathor's devils advocacy is well advised, but I think the Twins might make an ok splash in free agency, and I believe in Trevor May as a starer. We will see. All great speculation though. -
I am very, very high on Wade, as a 4th possible outfielder, and as Seth points out, with continued development, a possible starter. However, he is another left handed bat. You cannot have 4 of your 5 outfielders lefty's, IMO. If that is the case the Twins will need to pick up a veteran right handed stick who can play center if necessary (assuming LaMonte makes it to the bigs, which I think he will, sooner than later).

Gibson is a lock to make the team next year? He finished with almost indentical stats to 2016. I know he pitched well for a couple of months, but man this guy has been mostly terrible and is 30. Experiment should be over. I believe May has the stuff, but we certainly cannot count on him and agree with others, that we hopefully bring someone else in, better than a Jamie Garcia to bolster the starting pitching.

Great unexpected season, no complaints here (shocking I know). It will be interesting to see what happens with Molly. If he does not have an extension in the next day or so, my guess is he won't. I think I am indifferent either way as FalVine need to do what they think is best but it will be interesting. At least another reason for us to check TD every day! Go Cleveland!

Article: MIN 3, TOR 2: Buxton Blasts Walk-Off HR
rghrbek replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This Seth. Bunting for hits, because of defense, or you are super fast, or slumping. I am fine with that. It's the sac bunts that are the problem, freely giving up the out. Mackey and co. were talking bunts in general and never mentioned our #3 hitter sac bunting 5 times this year (half of the MLB total for that spot in the lineup), or the early inning attempts/sacs (when I was listening). There have been sac bunts in early innings this year. More importantly there have been attempts at sac bunts many times throughout this year, that were fouled off and then they hit away. If we were a better bunting team, we would have a lot more sacs.- 64 replies

Article: Twins 2017 Minor League Hitter Of The Year
rghrbek replied to Steve Lein's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Wade has also been my guy the last two years, as he's been fun to follow. I am also excited that Polacios had such a bounce back season. You cannot have too many SS prospects, and I am not convinced that Gordon is our everyday SS of the future. Not yet at least. Also glad Mitch won this. I wish he was playing more up here, but I guess the twins are not willing to see what they have, while in the playoff race. Too bad, as I think his right handed hit tool could be beneficial with Sano out of the lineup. Thanks panel for your lists, I do appreciate it!- 43 replies

Update: 10 times #3 hitters have sac bunted this year in MLB. 5 of those 10 times it was the Twins. 4 of those 10 times it was Polonco. Baffling.

Article: MIN 4, KC 2: Comeback Complete
rghrbek replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Per Gleeman: The #3 spot in the lineup, across all of baseball, has laid down 7 sac bunts this year. The Twins own 3 of those. Polonco 2. Considering Polonco didn't start batting 3rd until like the last two weeks, when he has been the best hitter (BA) in the American League, I find that odd, but also not shocking considering who our manager is. Pretty sure Molly ordered it up (my gut), even if he didn't, he's created a culture of sac bunting is great! Just glad we won. If we go on to win this series, that game last night can be looked as the one that vaulted us through the rest of the season into the playoffs (hopefully). Gibson, fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me, fool me a third time????? What is that called? I love what he is doing right now, but have 0 faith he will do it next year. Just my opinion. I hope he keeps it up.- 67 replies

My biggest complaint was just who was playing. You really needed to have this win last night to win the series against a terrible, terrible team. Molly has Gardy's fear of catchers getting hurt, so I was shocked to see both in at the same time. Why bring Garver up if you are afraid to play him at catcher? As we've seen from Gimenez, he is not very good behind the plate (not to mention his bat). Apparently his leadership is off the charts I guess. If Garver plays catcher, then Vargas can play first or Mauer. If Mauer plays then Vargas can DH. Also as much as I like Granite, it would be nice to have a real 4th outfielder, who can bat right handed. Playing a utility man in the outfield is not ideal (in multiple games no less). Not throwing out our best against a Toronto team that usually crushes us. This could be ugly. Of course every time I have thought this before this Twins team has bounced back.

You are comparing the 1987 Twins and their one playoff series win (to get to the World Series), to what MLB teams have to do 30 years later? A WC team has to win 3 series just to get to the World Series. Just not the same and the odds of a team, barely .500 or better beating teams like that goes down every series they play. IMO

Article: It's OK To Get Excited Again, Twins Fans!
rghrbek replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's been great to watch the bounce back, especially against a good Brewers team (albeit the worst RISP team in MLB). To me it's been a perfect case scenario, we sold some stuff, got value back and are again competing. All year we have been competing because of our young kids (and Erv). There is no better way to prepare for next year. If we end up staying in it, how great will that experience be for our young guys? Yes I am excited. That being said. Mauer is not having that much better of year than last year. We need to think about platooning him with Garver or a waiver wire trade as has been suggested. It's nice Dozier is heating up, as we know what that could mean, but for the vet calling out the FO, then striking out 5 times in a game and not hustling out a grounder to first..I am holding off on my praise for him. Lead by example, not words. Love that Polonco is restoring our faith as a hitter. Him not panning out would be a huge blow to this team and our future 2nd base options. Rosario is having a defining offensive year, as he may have fought through his awful bad habits at the plate. However, he literally almost makes one mistake a game in the field or on base, which is still concerning. Finally I say we let the bullpen go, sink or swim, and hopefully our Manager stops riding guys with 4 run leads. Need to trust the young kids. It's great experience. Win Twins!- 59 replies

And I would also add that the national media won't blast the Twins FO. They see us as pretenders and almost always mention the large negative run differential...They probably are a little more objective than we are, of course. -
Article: Making Zack Granite Fit
rghrbek replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think we are starting to see enough of Vargas to know he is a replacement level player. I'm not giving up on him just yet, but that ob% is a problem. I think eventually Granite v. Rosario is a wash. Granite, by all accounts, is fundamentally sound, and would offer similar value to rosario, although differently. One has a better ops, one is a better fielder and will have a more consistent approach. I think the key is, and we have not discussed it much, is having Garver, a rh batter, play first base and dh, while being the 3rd catcher. That way Molly may not be afraid to ph for gimenez. Having Robby and Mitch as DH/1b to spell Joe and also add depth at catching would allow for us to carry Granite, who could be a legit 4th outfielder/ pinch runner, while also finding out if he is for real at the MLB level. Something to think about...Vargas sample size is getting pretty big, and as Gleeman has pointed out, Vargas is a replacement level player. -

Article: How Long Is Eddie Rosario's Leash?
rghrbek replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If those are his slash lines this year, then how is he batting .273/.313/.771? I agree with Mike here, that you have to keep throwing him out there just simply based on ability. However, once we hit August and when his ob% is under .300 (which it will be IMO), then you have to create competition and reward players, especially older players (minor league ages) like Britton or Wade, if they are performing at high levels. I do think we tend to think Eddie is a better fielder than he is. He shows flashes of brilliance, but more frequently he has had confusing blunders. Molly sent him down last year because of all the mental mistakes and somewhat for his approach at the plate. Has anything changed that much? He is having one of his spikes of positivity right now at the plate, but I am thinking he kinda is what he is (or has been). We will see. No question the spotlight is on him now.
