  1. Sounds like it's time to trade Vargas to Boston. Big Papi is almost done, so they'll be looking for the next one.
  2. Even in a blowout loss like this, Sano makes pitchers act differently. They don't want to put the ball anywhere near the middle.
  3. Sorry, I didn't mean to get into politics. Policies have to come from somewhere... ;-)
  4. Jepsen gives up his usual two runs per appearance...
  5. The Minnesota Twins has become a sanctuary where waning veterans get fat contracts for mediocre production. It's like the old men running the front office are making roster decisions with darts and a magic 8 ball. It's like they read the part in Moneyball where you can get great deals on players, but forgot the part where they have to fit in somehow.
  6. I don't see anything particularly deceptive about Moylan.
  7. Abad does throw some very pretty pitches. Love that floating cutter at 64mph.
  8. Sometimes the man is simply psychic.
  9. If he faced him a lot, I think Joe Mauer's average against Moylan would be about .800... That was a very comfortable swing.
  10. WTF Sano? All he needed do was corral that ball by kneeling down to block it from getting past him on the carom. Even I could do that!
  11. One thing we don't talk about much with AAA veterans like Dean and Rogers is that, when they do come up, they look far less overwhelmed by The Show then the younger cats. Even if their stuff isn't as fizzy as some, they seem a lot more emotionally composed than the guys that are fast-tracked. I don't expect to see Taylor Rogers implode emotionally if somebody bangs a ball over the fence off him. That said, why not call up a couple more AAA veterans like Wheeler, Wimmers and Albers? None of these guys is going to wow the radar gun, but they've spent enough time in the high minors so that they're thoroughly familiar with their games.
  12. Sometimes a position player can get away with playing hurt, but if you're a pitcher whose success depends on placing high-speed pitches within inches of your target, every part of your body has to be pretty close to a hundred percent functional, if not pain-free. Personally, I think Perkins is about finished with his career. Hughes belongs in the bullpen as a middle reliever that can go five innings on occasion. Meanwhile, the Twins need to keep calling up pitchers from AAA and AA to at least give them a taste of what they'll be facing. As we've all been seeing, baseball is a game mostly for guys in their mid-twenties and early thirties. Pitchers that go beyond thirty are rare; by then most are losing the velocity that made them effective. A few learn to change speeds and pick the corners, but it doesn't look like Hughes and Perkins are very good at walking that tightrope.
  13. Yeah, but he'd probably try to pull the bunt for a home run, then hit a two-bouncer to short. ;-)
  14. Dozier has to prove he can punish pitchers that work him low and outside. Obviously the book says don't give Dozier anything up and in unless he's diving across the plate. He's got to develop a Mauer-style sit back and slash it oppo tactic for those low outside pitches. If the two players swapped styles, Dozier would suddenly bat .350 and Mauer would hit 35 home runs.
  15. Minority? I'm looking for a rarity. Find me a Twins manager that gets these guys to win some games. I don't care about origin, looks, or what's his/her/its native tongue. My only restriction is they can't bring a gun. With this bunch it's just too tempting.
  16. So Phil Hughes is a power pitcher that depends on velocity to get guys out. He no longer has that velocity, and his other pitches are not particularly effective. On the other hand, he doesn't walk many guys... Except after a couple home runs.
  17. I was kind of hoping the Twins would go with Gene Glynn as manager. Glynn spent some time in the Rays organization, and has several years experience managing in the Twins minors. I got the impression he was a good motivator.
  18. Being a great baseball player is not the same as being a great manager. As a player Paul Molitor had a powerful inner drive to succeed and do everything well. As a manager Molitor has not showed me that he is able to instill that same level of motivation in his players. Like every team, the Twins have a mixed bag of personalities on the roster. Some of them drive themselves to succeed, others need to be cajoled, threatened, yelled at, etc. After the Twins canned Ron Gardenhire, I was hoping they would pitch a trunk full of money at Terry Francona. Instead, the Twins looked inside the organization, which might seem laudable, but when they picked Molitor, I thought it could be a big mistake. Molitor always struck me as an introvert, a quiet, intense competitor. Can an introvert do the yelling and verbal manipulations that motivate a mixed group of professional athletes? The apparently listless personality of this Twins squad may provide a hint of the social skills that Paul Molitor lacks as a manager. Unless you have a veteran team of self-motivated stars, a manager needs to be a naturally vocal, gregarious, at least slightly charismatic leader. Molitor is quietly intense and determined. The Twins might do better with somebody that makes more noise.
  19. Robbie Grossman, thanks for coming to play today.
  20. I think I'm going to start watching some Cubs games. Heckuva team. it's fun to watch really good baseball. I wonder if any Twins players watch teams like the Cubs and the Giants. They should. It's instructive to see how the game should be played.
  21. High middle fastball tailing into the bat. If there's one pitch you must never, ever throw, that's it. Is Michael Tonkin just a little dim?
  22. And Dozier tries to pull yet another outside pitch for an easy double play grounder.
  23. I can see a good running gag for a baseball comedy. One announcer keeps asking the other one, "Did you ever meet so-and-so?" The second announcer says, "Sure, great guy, how is he?" and then the first announcer says, "Well, he passed away today..." And do that over and over for the whole movie. Thanks for the idea, Dick.
  24. On a related topic, I don't suppose there's a Bryce Harper type coming along for the 2017 draft, is there? I got a feeling the Twins may have a very high draft pick a year from now. When a team's this bad, maybe the league should let them have the first five draft picks. Then in a few years they could at least be mediocre.
