  1. On a good note, Pat Dean is indeed still hitting Centeno's glove. That may not stop super-hot Danny Valencia, but most hitters don't do very well against a pitcher that hits his spots.
  2. Hahahahaha, Buxton slips and falls, but still catches the fly ball! Hahahaha!
  3. If Pat Dean hits Centeno's mitt, he'll have a good game.
  4. I haven't noticed any particular plan for Vargas, other than not wanting to give him away to Boston for nothing. The guy is stuck in limbo with Mauer and Park in his way. His only way out is either to hit .400 the rest of the year or get traded.
  5. Not to knock Edgar Corcino's good May, but if the guy's 23 in Ft. Meyers, isn't he beating up on pitchers that are a few years younger than he is? Why don't the Twins bump Corcino up a notch to see what he can do against guys more his age?
  6. You know, I would bat Buxton before Centeno. Get Buxton on base, then follow with our scrappy little catcher banging a double in the gap. Buxton scores from first on anything longer than a clean single. BTW, anybody else notice that Juan Centeno is a MUCH better catcher than Kurt Suzuki? Centeno hits MUCH better, receives better, frames better, throws MUCH better, and... well, he doesn't field balls in the dirt better, but I bet he can get better at that. I think Centeno does a better job getting Trevor May to keep his heater down, too. Sits right down and pats his glove in the dirt, and May understands that language. Centeno actually establishes his presence in a game. He intimidates runners with his throws to first and his good gun to 2nd. He plays with lots of enthusiasm. I really like the guy. I swear I saw May almost start to laugh on the mound when he saw Centeno sit down and pat the dirt in front of his crotch. You really want me to fire a 95mph fastball at your nuts? I could see May thinking that.
  7. I hope they actually play Kepler for a week. It would be nice to see if he can hit major league pitching.
  8. Shame. Shame. Shame. Game of Thrones joke.
  9. Or a roulette wheel. Each of the 36 slots would have a word like Gets a Little Better, Injured Ankle, Regression, Won't Learn, Hammy, TJ Surgery, Can't Hit Curve, etc. One slot of 36 would say Becomes MLB Starter, and once every thousand spins you have one slot for MLB Hall of Fame.
  10. How about Kennys Vargas, who we all know is the next Big Papi? If Vargas has to go somewhere, let it be in the National League, where we won't face him too often, but we get to see him hitting homers in the World Series for Atlanta for the next decade. Meanwhile, we'll see if we can salvage a reasonable career from Teheran.
  11. His swing was like Dave Parker of the Pirates, but with even more power. Ortiz could play good 1st base, surprisingly nimble feet and a quick glove. As Seth said, the knock on him was a lack of durability, or the perception of it. Part of the learning process for young players is learning how to take care of their bodies, avoiding injuries, staying in shape, etc. David Ortiz went through that phase, but he got over it and has had a great career. For those who have forgotten, Ortiz was irritated by the hitting philosophy of the Twins, which emphasized hitting to all fields, where Ortiz wanted to just pull home runs. Later he credited Twins coaches for helping make him a better hitter, able to go oppo when needed. Ortiz got many key hits for Boston by flipping his wrists to send a ball to left field.
  12. This "surge" is due to a combination of factors. Obviously Sano and Mauer are hot, but for the last few games we have seen an outfield that hits, a catcher that hits, and pitchers that don't get blown away in the first four innings. I'm going to give Robbie Grossman and Juan Centeno a little love here. Both guys have been around a while in the minors, and both of them are good, steady ballplayers. Centeno especially has impressed me with good at-bats and solid catching, including a remarkably good arm. Been a long time since I saw a catcher make his presence known in a ballgame, even if he's pretty bad at blocking balls in the dirt. With Centeno behind the plate I feel no sense of desperation to get Kurt Suzuki back. With Grossman in LF I feel no desperation to get Rosario back. Let's leave this lineup be for a bit. I could get used to watching a team that competes.
  13. It's going to be an interesting season for Joe Mauer. Right from the start I could see that he was recognizing pitches quicker and barreling up the ball much better than last year. That said, he is having the normal ups and downs of an mlb hitter, which differs quite a bit from the amazing consistency he displayed at the peak of his hitting career. It is quite possible that Mauer is still a ways off from full recovery from his concussion symptoms, but clearly he's a lot better today than he was at this time a year ago. Anybody else notice that Joe Mauer almost never breaks a bat?
  14. That is one of the strangest plays of the year. Somehow fitting.
  15. Here comes Jepsen. Twins really needed a couple more runs last inning.
  16. Okay, now I see why they're starting Dean but keeping Rogers in the pen. Dean has better composure and command. Rogers needs to get his emotions under control. Good play by Danny Santana. Really had to get his feet right before that throw.
  17. Dick thinks he's announcing for a radio audience.
  18. Lucky for Hughes he left with a lead, but with two guys on 2nd and 3rd and only one out. Should have yanked him after the first guy got on.
