  1. At least Rowson noticed that Buxton wasn't striding forward. Did you know that the follow through with your feet should look a lot like a pitcher's follow through with his feet? That is, your rear foot must carry through, just as a pitcher's foot must come off the rubber. Otherwise, you cannot generate the kind of power we see from hitters like Bryce Harper, whose back knee winds up behind his front knee. That's how you know Harper is driving off his back foot. That's why the ball goes so far. You have to generate movement into the pitch. You can't just twist your body and keep your feet planted.
  2. I could see it being Wilk, simply to give the guy one chance to show that he can be a starter with sufficient time to prepare. Throwing him in to relieve Santiago wasn't really a good test. Giving him a week to prepare should be a better measure of what he's really got. There's still lots of pressure; if Wilk flops in this one, there's not much reason to keep him around. We saw that he has moments where his darting, sinking fastball looks impossible to hit. Alas, those are followed by moments where it looks like he's tossing BP. Maybe that means he could do short relief work just throwing his sinking fastball...
  3. Unfortunately, the cupboard is sparse for fresh 4th and 5th starters. As you mentioned, Mejia is not yet dominating, Gibson needs time, and other guys in AAA are either non-prospects (Slegers) or retreads. The real problem looks like injuries. The Twins appear to be hit by a lot of minor issues landing their highest pitching prospects on the DL. Chargois and Reed are two of the top guys in Rochester...DL. Same time, Stewart, Jay, Gonsalves and Jones all are injured in AA. This does still leave two starters that might be okay in the 5th spot: Slegers and Felix Jorge. Of the two, Jorge is on the 40, but it can't be too tough to figure out a guy to drop for Slegers. Thing I like about Jorge is that he has always been a stingy control pitcher, very consistent, and he doesn't seem to mind pitching deep into games. Slegers is hot, and he's been doing it against better competition. I could go either way, or both.
  4. What a good article. Everything made sense. Hey, what's this guy doing around here??
  5. If people are wondering what's the difference between last year's Berrios and this year's edition, it looks like he has changed a few things. First, it looks like he has shortened his stride to let his pitches get a better down plane. Second, his mechanics look more consistent. Third, his escape from the 3rd inning of his first start showed that he has learned not to implode after a couple things go wrong. That allowed his teammates to rally in the next inning, and then Berrios regained his confidence and kept a very good Indians team quiet for another few innings. Plus, of course, he changed the brand of grease he's using on the ball. It's not quite as slippery, works great as a hair conditioner...and it's a floor wax!!
  6. He must be going with a full synthetic oil this year. Maintains viscosity forever, great stuff!
  7. Wilk does have a low, darting pitch, looks like maybe a cutter. If he keeps that low, he could be a ground ball machine. His curves are nothing special, but okay as a change of pace. There it was again, that darting pitch low in the zone. Why doesn't he throw more of those?? Wilk is an odd duck as a pitcher. Seems to have inconsistent mechanics. There, he just got a strike out with that low heater. Only 89 mph, but it's low in the zone, sinking. I guess I can see why the Twins were intrigued by Wilk. He has moments where he looks like he could dominate, but then he changes something, and the next moment he looks like he's tossing batting practice. Not reliable.
  8. Twins can't possibly have a better pitcher than Wilk in Rochester. Trevor Hildenberger, D.J. Baxendale, Alex Wimmers, David Hurlbut... Question is, how to open up a spot on the 40-man roster for one of these guys...?
  9. Yeah, it's pretty early, but which Twins field players can pitch an inning?
  10. Hey, Molitor just acknowledged what we noticed half an hour ago. Just not Santiago's day. Obviously he was distracted by the occasion. Happy Mother's Day!
  11. I guess Molitor is waiting for that magical seven-run threshold before he considers yanking Santiago, who's got zip-point due dew today.
  12. Well, this team isn't out of it completely. Trevor Bauer's not a great pitcher, and four runs is a doable hill...
  13. Some pitchers, with some teams... Could be Santiago simply doesn't match up well with Cleveland's hitters. Yank him early, let's see the long relief game.
  14. Flexibility in the infield makes complete sense. With the middle infield looking good on the mlb club, the most responsible thing the minors coaches can do is get their SS and 2B guys ready to play either position, even a little work at 3B if possible. That way, if somebody on the Twins goes on the DL, the team can call on whichever "middle infielder" is playing the best overall ball at the time. Another reason is the growing prevalence of shifted defenses. Today I saw Miguel Sano field a grounder where Dozier usually plays. No reason why minor leaguers shouldn't learn to play the whole infield.
  15. I have noticed when ByungHo Park connects, the outfielders just kind of turn around to see how far up into the stands the ball goes. Mitch Garver is bucking for a promotion. Which of the two Twins catchers has the lowest batting average? Might be time for a swap.
  16. The key moment in the game was in the 3rd inning, right after Berrios yanked a fastball past Castro with a man on 3rd base. Runner scores, and then Berrios walks the next guy with some increasingly wild looking pitches. Last season that was the signal that he was about to implode. This time, he got himself under control, then worked his way out of the inning, leaving the Twins behind by just one run. Behind by one, the Twins were able to rally back in the 4th inning with 3 big runs. That allowed Berrios to walk to the mound in the bottom of the 4th with a 2-run lead, whereupon he started pitching with more confidence. He didn't need a shutout, just limit the damage. That's when I think Berrios realized he could win this game. He started showing some dazzling stuff in the middle innings. This kid really has a live arm. His heater has lots of movement, and his curve bends every bit as much as Duffey's, tho Berrios doesn't have Duffey's dizzying variety of benders...yet. JO Berrios looks like he's going to be a very, very good pitcher.
  17. Best part is, the Twins can sneak up on everybody. If they win twenty in a row, nobody on either coast will hear about it.
  18. Dang, you're right. That must be magnetta, a color that looks good on bikinis and my Speedo...
  19. Dang, you're right. What is that, magnetta?
  20. Best thing is, Berrios now knows for certain that he is capable of shutting a team down. Nothing about his performance looked like a fluke. Excellent movement on his heater, good command. Hard bend on his curves, as much as Duffey's. When Berrios relaxes a bit more, he'll be dropping those big hooks on people and driving them crazy. Berrios can now bank that memory for future reference.
  21. What a fine job. Well done, young man, bravo. Jose Berrios dominated just like he did in AAA.
  22. Wow, nice slow curve. That's going to get some outrageous strike outs.
  23. Was that Berrios getting ready to pitch another inning? Commercial break! Ghaaa!
  24. My god, those chartreuse and gray ball caps are ugly. Great cause, ugly caps.
