  1. Berrios really does have a butt-buckling slider. Butt out, yer out!
  2. I'm not going to say Jack Morris jinxed Berrios with "something special," but...argh...
  3. True, but usually Rosario swings at the wrong pitches with more confidence. Right now he doesn't look confident, just worried.
  4. Twins needed to make Tillman throw more pitches. Don't swing at everything, make him throw strikes!
  5. Not sure what's up with Rosario. He doesn't look good at the plate. He's swinging a lot, but at the wrong pitches.
  6. Good grief, Morris was talking to Santana for about two minutes, and Berrios is already done with the inning. That's pretty quick.
  7. OMG, did Kennys Vargas just prank Sano? He didn't give him the arms up sign! Hahahaha!
  8. Buffoonery, Dick? What are we, chopped clown shoes?
  9. I've liked this Polanco kid since the first moment I saw him when they called him up from single A ball. He's just a pure ballplayer.
  10. Berrios brings a bundle of nervous energy, but he appears to have it under control. Three quick outs, good.
  11. Exactly. Always lead off the same distance (or a little more, if you're fast) than the fielder is from the bag.
  12. 3 zip already? Ghaa, I just turned on the TV!!
  13. Many years ago Microsoft Word introduced an Autocorrect feature that could turn commonly misspelled words into their corrected form, like 'teh' into 'the.' I discovered that the feature was customizable - you could make your own list of word/corrected word in the program. Feeling like Calvin one day, I got into my brother's business computer. In Word's Autocorrect customizer I entered his name, then on the other side I put "@$$hole." <--Hey, TD's got Autocorrect, too! It was actually a couple days later when I got the call from my brother about that little change... I also did a screen captured of his Windows desktop, hid his icons in a folder, then made the capture image into his Windows wallpaper. Oh, my poor old knee was sore from slapping on that day, I tell ya!
  14. I agree completely that Santana is at the top of his game. He was always a cool customer, but this season he seems to be in a kind of Zen frame of mind on the mound. He seems totally unconcerned, almost careless as he confers with his catcher buddy what to throw next. In Baltimore today, the light rain seemed to irritate Santana more than any particular pitching situation. He seemed to be dispatching the Orioles batting order with all the stress of sorting socks before you put them in your dresser.
  15. The word, "concerned" actually seems unexpectedly significant. Tonight's game in Baltimore featured Santana pitching in a light rain for nine innings. During that time, the only sign of concern on Santana's face appeared to be a bit of irritation at the rain, and one goofy moment when he stared down a base runner on 2nd, then proceeded to throw a wild pitch. Runner went to third base, then Santana gathered himself and finished getting the side out. A complete lack of concern seemed to be the main emotion on Santana's face, bordering dangerously close to disinterest. It was like watching a guy idly working on his technique of skimming stones on a calm day at a still pond, all by himself. It was as if there was nobody there but Santana and his buddy, the catcher. Throw a curve? Sure, buddy. How about a two-seamer in on the hands? Done. Dangle a curve outside the zone? Consider it done, friend. Santana worked the whole game like that. Completely relaxed, essentially unconcerned. Imagine how good other pitchers could be if they could emulate Santana's frame of mind. I hope he stays like that a while longer. As a Twins fan, it's very relaxing.
  16. What I noticed was that they shut him down right about the time he started touching 100mph. That's also when a human arm is reaching the limit of how hard it can throw a baseball. To me, that's a smart move for a young and talented pitcher. Let the professional coaches take the praise or blame for what happens next.
  17. Sano is going to be a much better hitter than Stanton. Sano works the count better than most veteran sluggers do now. He also hits hard line drives (and home runs) to the opposite field, which means he is able to drive balls almost anywhere near the zone. I'm not sure what comp fits best, but Sano's plate discipline does remind me of Frank Thomas. A career like that would be very nice indeed.
  18. Shutting down Greene was a good example of being responsible to a young star's potential. His HS coach is saying, "Okay, I took you this far; now let professional coaches teach you to throw 100mph without wrecking your arm." Isn't that what you'd want as a drafting team, a super-talented kid with the least possible damage to his golden arm?
  19. Liriano is not a good comp for Duffey's situation. Liriano was doomed to arm problems by his violent mechanics, where Duffey's mechanics appear to be quite smooth and sustainable. Duffey's challenge has been developing a formula for getting righties out as well as lefties. His physical stamina is not a question. He now appears to have found his magical formula, so I see good reason to try him out again as a starter. Meanwhile, the strength of this year's farm system is definitely relievers, not starters. Can the Twins find an arm to replace Duffey in the pen? You could start with Gibson, who needs to learn to pitch inside whether he wants to or not. Tell Gibby to throw inside or be stuck in the pen forever. Next up, Trevor Hildenberger. Then, Melotakis in AA.
  20. Of all the things mommy told me to leave alone, my bullpen was not one of them. Let's agree not to use that as a euphemism...except it already is a euphemism...ghaa!
  21. Imagine a local baseball player that is great, right out of high school, gets drafted by the home team, plays his whole career in his home state, wins batting titles, gold gloves, and plays clutch baseball nearly every game. That's why I'm still mad that the Padres got Dave Winfield, dang it! Draft Hunter Greene! Revenga! Oh, and Mauer is great, too. ;-)
  22. The Padres got Dave Winfield, so I say we take Hunter Greene. So there. Ptbbb!
  23. Jack Morris's criticism of Kyle Gibson today was another reminder of how bullpen duty can offer a major league pitcher a chance to fix an aspect of his game. For Tyler Duffey, it allowed him to learn to increase his pitch angles to righties and lefties by standing on their side of the rubber. For Gibson, I would have him focus on learning to throw a certain percentage of pitches inside, to force batters to move their feet. For some reason Gibson shies away from pitching inside, and it's getting him killed. He has good stuff, but not that good. Morris is right - you've got to make guys move their feet, or they'll just lean out over the plate and crank line drives all day. Swap Gibson and Duffey. If nothing else, we'll get to see if Duffey's new trick works for more than a couple innings.
  24. Escobar. Okay, now they're just piling on. YES.
  25. You have to wonder if Buxton affected the pitcher's concentration just enough for Joe to take advantage...
