  1. After reading this article the following comes to mind. Maybe Major League Baseball should think about The future of the game. Too many strikeouts, less hits, bunting dying a slow death, hit and run not emphasized as much. This leads to a boring game and less people in the stands. And the shift. I start to think that so many fans love the analytical part more than game itself. Bob Nightengale the long time baseball writer had a good article about this issue in the USA Today. I think the article was written last summer. Now my personal opinion is that we need both: some of the old time baseball and with a good analytics dept. We just have to keep interest in the game. Football, basketball, and hockey are action sports and don’t have this program. Look at the Vikings, and the Wild.. sold out every game. And the NBA is thriving.
  2. Wade looked really good. The philosophy should always be, “Best players play! Period...instead of playing games.” This is especially true of pitchers instead wearing them out in the minors.
  3. He just doesn’t appear to have a feel for hitting. A guy like Robbie Grossman in no way has the athletic ability of Buxton but he has a feel for hitting. I would say no long term extension until he demonstrates the ability to hit for a respectable average.
  4. First of all great article, Nick. Two observations: One....the Presley trade makes one wonder, or contemplate if it was solid thinking on Falvey’s part. And second....the “finite” resources part. The Twins until the new Dodger ownership group came in the Twins were considered one of, or the richest ownerships in all of baseball. So the resources are there. In conclusion what has held the Twins back over the the years is ownership and interest.
  5. Joe Mauer is not the problem on this team. Start with ownership and the front office. Next year should be a definite and substantial move forward. If not.....then look at ownership. Any successful entity would.
  6. I quit watching when it was in the 5th inning. We’ve had losing seasons for at least 6 out of the last 8, or 9 years. So we had high draft choices for so many of those years. Where are all of these players? This front office is so disappointing. Where do they get all of these players that have been called up? Ultimately, the responsibility for these debacles lies with management. Absentee ownership is what we have. You must have interest in your product. It’s at the embarrassment level now! On a side note: Why would somebody buy a tickets to watch this mess?
  7. I would classify Joe’s career as better than very good. Very close to hall of fame and close to greatness. Could be in Tony Olivia catagory.
  8. What bothers me most is, “Where is this strong farm system that we are supposed to have”? We’ve had top picks for quite a few years as a result of poor teams....when will they start appearing? Why not bring up a guy like Gonvalas(sp).
  9. We’ve had one good season out of the last seven or eight. My question is: Where are are all of the high draft choices? Why do we have to use the LaMarr’s, etc of the world. The jury is out on the new front office.
  10. However, Garver is a real problem behind the plate. Not a Ruesse fan, but he’s right in that we have weakness at the catching position. I can see why Moiltor plays Wilson so much...because of defense.
  11. Great article and well written. Good job!
  12. It’s like a stock market situation......try not to sell when the market is bottoming. I would let the allegations play out. Maybe this will be a wakeup call and he’ll start making the necessary improvements both on the field and off the field.
  13. I agree that is important but a good teacher presents things in such a manner that it doesn’t overload the brain. Sure Martinez and Turner improved by applying these metrics but, I think, the vast majority of good hitters developled these techniques at a young age without even realizing it. And a lot of the overload stuff depends on the person themselve. For every Turner you have a Yogi Berra, who said, “you can hit and think at the same time”. Also, another great way to learn hitting is like the kid we signed from the Pittsburg area a few years ago whose dad had a hitting academy. He probably was in the cage everyday hitting and learning without any pressure. But not too many have that opportunity. But your right that analytics play a role......I’m just saying that not everybody is the same in learning. Ted Williams was very technical....probably one of the first...then you have a Mickey Mantle who was the ultimate natural. Interesting Discussion!
  14. Good thing Kepler doesn’t read this article. Or it would be like the famous golf professional Bob Tosk once said, “Paralysis because of over Analysis”.
  15. Sure Washington had slaves. You can only be a man of your times. If he had been an abolitionist during that era he probably never would have advanced to lead the Revolutionary army......country wasn’t ready at that time. And in my study of history his bravery and sacrifice was remarkable.
  16. Definitely agree with Beckmt.....Grossman would be a better choice than Werth. However, neither would be beneficial....both are washed up.
  17. Will the front office, or the Pohlads , be the biggest obstacle to the rise of this franchise? You wonder if they really have the required interest. Many would say no. We are a mid-level franchise but pay like a small market team. Yes, I feel the Pohlads are the key to the future.
  18. What makes you think this was a leaked story? I listened to Maki and Judd the other day and that was their take on it. I think in either case (Souhan and Ruesse) there was no leaked information. Anonymous sources is just an easy way to write a story. Nick is right....the Twins would have no reason to antagonize Sano...who is a big part of their future.
  19. We are not a small market team.....we are a mid-market team. I think we are somewhere in the 12th rated tv market.
  20. Great article Nick....really liked the article.
  21. Read Rand's article in today's paper...especially the comments.
  22. If the Twins think they will be serious contenders next year then I think Santana will remain on the team. It is too hard to find a front line pitcher like Santana. The Santana situation will tell a lot on how the front office views next season.
  23. In Buxton's case it could a matter of the old adage...." He couldn't hit the curve ball". Before advanced analytics how many times have we heard this statement over the years. Compare Buxton to Robbie Grossman.....Robbie has a real feel for hitting and bat control whereas Buxton doesn't. It's possible Buxton could find the stroke but most likely not. It's almost like putting in golf or scoring goals in hockey....some have a better feel than others. Let's hope it works out!
  24. This should come as a relief to all of us who were worried that Jim Pohlad didn't have the baseball acumen to make the right call. This is a quote from above......Jim Pohlad baseball acumen? Really?
