1. Scoreless 3 innings and then the wheels fall off. Typical Frankie. The question is how long they stick with him.
2. What? Losing sucks. We won 94 games in 2010. As St. Louis showed us last year, if you get to the playoffs you have a chance. Yes, our weaknesses were exposed during the 2010 series with the Yankees but I would much rather be in the playoff hunt right now and be looking at making trades that could put us over the top for this years wild card or division title.
3. Nice article Seth. I agree with you Jack. I also think TR tipped his hand by upping Doumit. As we have discussed all season. Pitching is the problem. If there isn't a boat load of pitching coming back in a trade, it is better to just hang onto our assets. Span and the rest have value and will continue to have value for years to come. Liriano had a ticking clock on his deal and that value ended at 3:00pm today. I'm glad TR took care of that, but the rest of the moves can happy, today, in the offseason or next year at the trade dealine. No move may and probably will be better than a desperate move.
4. Another nice recap Nick. Mike has summed it up correctly. If you want good players you need to offer good players. This is what the market brought for Frankie. I'm sure we will all be watching Liriano for the rest of the season and somehow try and draw conclusions from his performances into evaluating this trade. If he does well, does that reflect badly on Rick Anderson and the Twins coaching staff and how they handled him? If he pitches poorly will that mean that TR played it well and at least got some thing for him? I have a feeling we will land somewhere in between. He will pitch great at times and implode during other outings, just like he did for us. That may be good enough for the Sox. It didn't work for us, we are at a point where we need consistent starts and at this point in his career, Liriano is anything but a consistent pitcher. Good Luck to Frankie, I hope he finds that groove and fulfills his potential down the road, I just hope it isn't as White Sox.
5. I'll take some of that action. You put up $100 I'll give you my house.
6. I understand, but the point of the matter is that you don't get both offers at the same time. I have to yes or no to the 50K for one year, without knowing what other offers are out there. I'll take the 50K for one year and I think Frankie would take the 12+ million for next year and worry about his contract for 2014 later.
7. That's a good point, there maybe someone out there willing to give him 3/$20. But I don't think that he could turn down $12 for one year if we offered it to him. Even if there was a 25% chance of him taking the offer, we can't afford to make that mistake. We don't want him pitching for us anymore. that decision had been made. We can't afford to make him an offer, or he might accept.
8. I guess a lot of this discussion revolves around how you think Frankie will pitch over the second half of the season. Regardless of your criteria, wins, ERA, WAR, innings pitched etc... do really think he will pitch well enough to improve his value next offseason? I don't think he will pitch well enough to warrant a multi-year deal let alone one for 12 million plus. I guess we just wait and see.
9. Liriano had to be traded. 1) We weren't going to resign him after the season. 2) By moving him now, it does not affect our playoff chances. 3) We got something in return, every GM is aware of his struggles. I'm sure TR didn't walk away from a better offer. Every one bitching about this trade, would even be more upset if he were not moved by the deadline.
10. Only hand-held signs are allowed. No bed sheets with spray paint. Although I have regulary seen a "spans fans" hanging from the upper deck behind home plate. I believe it to be a more of a selectively enforced policy. If you try and hang a sign that reads "trade everybody and start over" sign, I think it would be removed pretty quickly.
11. No, I think Parmelee is in a totally different situation. Danny already had his chance, he got almost two full seasons of playing time. He literally played himself out of his position. As most agreed by most, Gardy didn't even have anyone to replace him at the time, but his play (attitude) had gotten to the point where they had to send him down. Parmelee has never had his chance to prove his worth, other than last September. I think you are implying that it is tough to prove you belong when you only get spot starts and a few pinch hitting AB's.
12. So what do we get out of Danny this time around? He definately spent enough time in Rochester to think things over and appreciate the position he was in and the opportunities that may or may not lay ahead. It also had to be eye opening to see the results of Plouffe and the real possibility that he may never get another chance at the major league level with the Twins. Was he humbled? Was that one of his problems? Perhaps he played above what could be expected long term in 2010 and that both 2011 and so far in 2012 were more of his normal level of play. I'm sure he sees this as a huge chance to prove that he belongs in the majors and will give us the best he has got for the next week. I'm sure he will get a lot of time at 3rd until Plouffe comes off the DL.
13. Gotta love those 1:00am posts.
14. He did mention that he hadn't spoken to him. I suppose it would have been a bigger problem if he had spoken to him recently.
15. Thanks for pulling this together Nick. Well done.
16. I'm glad we have TR in the GM position. He has been around the block a more than a few times and doesn't seem to get emotional about things. Very matter of fact approach. "We'll see how it plays out," Ryan said. "We're at a juncture in this schedule where a lot of rumors are flying around. I think I'll let those rumors continue to fly. I don't want to box myself in in any way, shape or form. There's a lot of possibilities. "There's always a chance [of trading a player]. We're not doing well in the standings, and when that happens you're looking to try to improve and maybe do some things." Then again, this is an important week for him. He needs to make some good decisions. He needs to move Liriano and he knows it. Just like the guy on the used car lot, what kind of deal can he swing? How many customers does he really have? Does he still have the touch of knowing how far he can push and still get the deal done.
17. Hammond2ndhome, you are certainly entitled to your opinion. Thanks for sharing your opinion as it does contribute to the discussion on this board. I think you have more first hand experiences than the rest of us, with your location. I know that I am in no position to disagree with you. Hopefully he will mature as he gains experience.
18. Hanley Ramirez was the most talented player traded so far this season. Will the Dodgers win even more games now that they have more talent? Ozzie couldn't make all of that talent work in Miami, so they are now trading away pieces. They aren't trading away the guys "without talent", they are trading away the guys "with talent" that didn't fit. Managers play a huge role in baseball, because the teams with the most talent don't always win. The managers that get the most out of their players win games.
19. the quick fix is 5 new starters. The every day lineup is competitive, maybe not to the level of making a serious run in Oct, but this team would look a lot different with some good starting pitching. Can you imagine a team where diamond was our 5th starter? A guy that was a complete surprise, that we weren't counting on?
20. So, If I have this correctly the most talented team wins the world series every year? Have the Yankee's just bought the wrong talent?
21. The Oakland A's are tied with the Angles after roughly 100 games. Too small of a sample size? Talent is important, but it is not even close to all that matters.
22. When the Twin's were stinking things up in the 70's I became a Dodger's fan and still have them as my favorite national league team. James Loney has been a huge disappointment for the Dodger's. .248/.306/.331 with only 2HR for them in 2012. Anything would be an improvement from them. I was thinking they would be willing to just trade Loney for Mourneau straight up. Loney is only 28 and I think they have flat out given up on him. Not sure The Twin's would want him with Parmelee waiting in the wings.

23. Imagine that, another GBDP. Joe this time.
