    I would also argue that while having premium defenders to sub, it's also quiet nice to always have a premium bat on the bench to sub as well. You don't necessarily need to go out and get the next Thome, but having a 3 man platoon at 1B/DH ensures that you have a decent bat on the bench if needed each game.

    On Jorge, he needs to get more Ks. His stats have been pretty good, but that K rate is too low. Given his age, there's room to improve, but I don't think that rank is unreasonable at all. I like guys like Jay and Romero much more than Jorge. If I remember right on Wade, he would have been drafted much higher had it not been for that injury. Personally, given how few of those mid-to late round picks make it, I like the strategy of taking guys who would have been higher picks but fall due to injury. Wade is a guy I hope starts in AA. He's another CF as well, which makes me think he can provide above average defense at the corner.

    Given he's a former SS, why not short? Polanco is a natural 2B. Dozier moved over there b/c his defense wasn't good, but his defense originally wasn't good at 2B either. He got better. Would it translate the other way? I'm spit balling a bit there, but I'd think the occasional game at SS might be a good thing, especially if he keeps hitting. If he shows he's adequate defensively, he's suddenly far more desirable at the deadline.

    True, but I think it's more of a late inning defensive substitution where they make sense. I wouldn't start either of those guys other than giving someone else the occasional day off, but having options to improve the defense when there's a lead certainly makes sense.

    yeah, way too soon to be taking Sano to DH.... Way too soon. Plenty of 3B guys have come up and improved defensively over time. I'll live with a bit below average for now knowing he will be an offensive force there. As he ages, that may change, but for now, Sano is a 3B.

    I could be wrong there. For some reason I remember him taking a massive step forward that year.

    As for Harrison, his make or break season was last year in my opinion. Obviously, he's still around, so I'll be rooting for him, but he's not exactly young for his league anymore and hasn't really improved in the high minors. He's not a bad option for this season, but I have to think he needs to take a big step forward if he wants to be playing baseball for much longer.

    I would look at a guy like Granite as that potential 4th OF of the future, though not necessarily in the traditional role. He has the potential to be good enough to start CF, but behind Buxton he's going to find himself in the corners a lot. His bat is probably passable in the corner, but that could lead to some pretty impressive defense. It also means that with 3 CF type guys on the roster (Rosario and Buxton being the other two), you can put some fantastic defense when a fly ball heavy pitcher is on the mound with relatively decent bats to go around as well. That would leave the 2018 and beyond team with a pretty nice 4 way platoon in the OF. Granite's issue presently is that he isn't ready yet, but I think by mid-season he may be the guy pushing hard for that spot. Hopefully that means Grossman's days are numbered.

    Lest we forget, Strassburg was not at the top of said draft boards before he went 1 overall. It can happen, and I hope it does. But yeah, if none of the college guys make a case for themselves, then I'm more than happy taking Green with that pick.

    I seem to remember Kolby Allard being at the top of draft charts at this time (last year?) during his draft as well.

    honestly, the only thing this tells me is what Falvine thinks of Antony's ability to acquire talent... I'm only half joking there. Wasn't expecting a ton for Abad, but it didn't take long to move Light off the roster. I wonder if he'll get claimed.

    My pen: Kintzler Pressly Belisle Rogers Tonkin Chargois One of O'Rourke, Hildenberger, or Melotakis I'd give Hildenberger and Melotakis every opportunity to win that job. I'd put Duffey in AAA, but I'd probably keep him has a starter. This also assumes Hughes is starting. Hughes will likely be with the team, and I'm not sure we can assume he's going to be on the 60 day DL to start the season.

    Given he struck out 10 batters per 9 innings last season, I've got to think his problem isn't a flat fastball, otherwise, batters would just sit on that. He was pretty good in the minors, and I think you have to give him another shot yet this year. I'd dump a guy like Boshers long before I sent Tonkin packing. Honestly, what we are really doing is waiting for Chargois, Melotakis, Burdi, Reed, and Hildenberger to force it. I'm hoping at least 2 of those guys really establish themselves this year with others forcing the issue, thus giving us the ability to trade off guys like Kintzler or Belisle as the deadline approaches.

    Playoffs are different simply b/c the pitching staff can be reduced. You don't need a 5th starter (or even a 4th in some cases) and with multiple days off between games, you don't need your worst options in the pen. Carrying an extra bat for flexibility makes sense.... unless of course you are Ron Gardenhire who refuses to play rookies and likes to let pitchers face only one batter.

    So to comment on Seth's projections, I think those are spot on. I'd give Murphy the first shot at backup, and let Garver get a bit more time in the high minors. One place to rethink might be swapping Navaretto for Murray. Murray hit pretty well, even in FTM and is a college guy that should be moved a bit quicker. Navaretto, on the other hand was drafted out of HS and his bat never really showed potential. I have no issues letting him repeat FTM. He's been rushed as he advanced.

    I like Rortvedt, but I'd like to see him do something before I make that statement. Garver will make the majors, and probably this year at some point. Rortvedt still has a very long road ahead of him.

    While I suspect Park will clear waivers, I don't like it... but that said, I personally would be perfectly fine being an injury away from calling up Vielma. Vielma can field quite well. He cannot hit, I get that. DanSan cannot do either. That's my issue. I'm not quite understanding the insurance policy. If that's what they wanted, I'd have to think there were better FA options available.

    culture change usually takes a while. It's not instantaneous. Might be a bit harder with guaranteed contracts than the ones that aren't. That said, I'd think you'd start seeing dividends in a year or two in that area.

    I'm curious about where he would have been drafted pre-injury. I personally love some of those later round injured guy picks that would have gone higher had they not gotten hurt.

    I understand this... I think. But when I read your posts in particular, it really comes across that way. That could very well be me, but I'm seeing a lot of disappointment on what was done (or not done) without a whole lot of lip service to what could actually have been done. It sure looks like making moves for the sake of making moves, because when you look at what moves were there to be made, there really weren't much. They went out and got a catcher. I'm not a huge fan of Castro, but he was needed and could actually work out quite well given the natural platoon with Murphy or Garver. They tried to trade Dozier. We all agreed (and they did too) that Dozier should be traded for SP help, and from the looks of it, that would have been JDL and not much else. There were no SP FAs worth getting, though moving May back into that role is the right answer. I agree they could (and may still) get help in the pen, though keep in mind that each reliever signed is going to block one of Chargois, Melotakis, or Hildenberger (and by later this year possibly Burdi and Reed too). I don't think it would be smart to go north with 3 rookies in the pen, but making sure you have the space for some of them is (like it or not) a good idea. The reality is that the core is there now on the offense. Yes, defense needs improving, no arguments there, but that is something you're going to have to live with if you want to roll with Buxton, Kepler, Rosario, Polanco, and Sano. None of these guys are realistically going anywhere, and all need to play. But at least we won't see Sano in RF on any sort of consistent basis.
