  1. Let me think about these two thoughts: Sano is one of the best hitting third base prospects to come along in years! Sano cannot beat out Plouffe at third base! Hmmm!
  2. Greatest TD headline of all time: WHOOPS, I FORGOT ABOUT BUXTON! More than one commentator has commentated about Sano, Walker et al about swinging at down and out sliders. The standing joke at our house was always, how do you get Torii Hunter or Michael Cuddyer out? Walk the bases full, and throw them three breaking balls in the dirt! (We had a low humor threshold). Regardless, they and others have spent years in the majors trying to harness that temptation. Remember pitchers are not throwing it because it's a bad idea!
  3. Why oh why is Nunez stil on this roster??
  4. The other day I asked rhetorically "what am I missing". Someone alertly noted, "optimism"! There are several scenarios here: They start the season well, then fade, and then slowly start bring in some young talent. The record is slightly better than last year. They start the season and don't fade, but are always on the outer fringes of contention. TR signs an aging (fill in the blank) to get us over the hump. We don't! No matter how they start the season the FO accepts this is the beginning of a rebuild. If a player is in the way, he is moved, this years performance only affects his trade value. All of the above preclude a contender. And frankly I don't care if we are a distant second or 5th. What I would like to see is real movement to the future. If I see that I will be optimistic, regardless of the won loss.
  5. I agree totally with you summation of the future. But my ongoing consternation is not due to the prospective future. It's due to the present reality, AND the concern that the FO will be so slow to pull the trigger that another year will be lost. I think the players are available in the orginasation, the question is whether they are going to be playing in Chatanooga, Rochester, or Mpls. Whether th FO reticence is based on contract issues, trying to cover their posteriors for moves that did not pan out, or the lack of nerve to go "all in", the result is the same.
  6. I used to have that optimism for the Twins. And I still do, but gene optimism will not resurface until there is some actual change. It's been replaced by the pragmatic gene. While admittedly that gene is less fun, it also less disappointing. Gene pragmatic does not preclude one from hoping or being a fan, it just causes one to question rationale. It causes one to notice that cyber metrics are statistics, and can be used like all statistics. To make an argument from either side of the issue. That's maybe why Vegas, ESPN, et al see the Twins no higher than 27th overal, yet fans can see them over .500? i don't dismiss cyber arithmetic out of hand, but I do think it diminishes the "eye test" (and the smell test). The Twins are not going to play.500 ball with the roster as it is currently constructed.
  7. Also, the sad fact remains that even if Vegas is somewhat wrong, it's stll going to be a long year. While I would take the over, it would not be by much. If I am not mistaken we are swapping out Escobar for Hunter. The SS spot is an unknown, we moved an outfielder, and maybe added a plus (for us) pitcher? Why would Vegas or any of the other prognosticators see any significant improvement. We have a team tha has lost 90 games four, count em, four years in a row! And we have virtually NO open spots on the roster. What am I missing?
  8. I was also thinking you were way too much of an expert! . As for me, I rely on my knowledge that they do not build all those big buildings in that desert with my winnings!
  9. It looks like and exciting season, us and the Phillies in a battle to the end! I wonder what that number would have been without signing Santana, Hunter, and moving Arcia. Instead, we would have announced Buxton was playing CF, Rosario to LF, and two of either Meyer, May, and Berrios to the rotation.
  10. Using his left arm to both pitch, and (likely) sign the arb agreement, is likely the reason that he will end up as the 5th starter. UGH! When people refer to the business side of baseball as the ugly side, they always refer to a player running out of time or talent. They never talk about a lesser talented player blocking someone just because the FO made a mistake. Trevor May had some interesting comments on the subject, about how contracts and salary levels enter into whom plays, when and where. As my 4 yr old granddaughter says, "it's not all about winning"
  11. Sadly I agree with you. To answer what's holding May back? Terry Ryan! May doesn't have to beat out Milone, Pelfrey, or Stauffer. They all have to fail miserably for him to get a chance. That seems to be the reality of life for a Twins rookie.
  12. Hmm. U got me, I re read it and notice now that MVP has two meanings! Kind of like "not to bright" and "not too bright". Mauer Nolasco (he wins in abstentia, because he got HOT and was traded to a contender after the ASG)
  13. The Chief should get a trolling warning for that remark! Arcia and Mauer.
  14. I had always heard that he was called out on a bad 3rd strike call. I have no proof of that, but it was always the story I had heard. My son played ing that tourney for another team, and wanted to stay and watch Mauer. But I had to get back for work. That might have been a mistake?
  15. Here's a question. If you deduct the extra commercial time, both between innings and pitching changes, and remove the 7th inning patriotic salute to America from the current length of games, what do we end up with? (Please don't tell me we should have time for the salute, I know that, this is only about the math). I am not sure when the inning breaks time was increased and to what level? For the record, I am an "old schooler" or at least old something. And I do find the games too lengthly. TIVO solves some of the problem at home, but complicates participating in the TD game threads.
  16. I am not a prognosticator, but I do enjoy predicting things like the weather, the stock market, and the end of the world! By using a complex mathematical formula, and feeding it into my iPad, I am able to predict with a 96.4 degree of certainty that if your best player is rated 9th in his position, and you likely have no others at that lofty level, you are not going to have a great season.
  17. A lot of his problems started when he split up with Kemps. Maybe it was the cows after all?
  18. I truly think Dozier's power is questionable. I just don't see him as being any kind of a consistent power guy. But I guess this season will answer that. As for Mauer not getting the ball up towards right field, he never has. He is most comfortable hitting the ball deep in the zone, and when he try's to pull, or is forced to pull he seems to roll over on it. He might just be the reverse of most hitters. For him going the other way is natural, so pulling is just as difficult as another hitter going the other way.
  19. I have never considered Mauer a 3 hitter. That's kind of odd since your 3 spot usually goes to your best hitter. But you also want more pop in that spot. That said, if my best alternative is Dozier, even in a platoon I would stick with Mauer. As much as I agree he is a true 2 spot hitter, I also have not been able to identify someone to take his 3 hole. Hmm, maybe that's why the Twins have lost over 360 games in the last 4 years?
  20. Mauer is as close to a mechanical hitting machine as plays the game. In theory, and likely in practice this makes a shift in the OF towards left, and in the infield middle right even more effective. Basically you can count on him to hit the ball consistently as pitched. I can't believe the endless well hit balls down the LF line that were caught did not impact his production. As for pulling the ball he never has been God at getting air under anything to the right side. It's just not his strong suit.
  21. I am a Mauer fan, and as a rule I think your "best hitter" should hit third. But I have argued for years that he is not a 3 spot hitter. And especially since OF shifts have taken away the left field line. That was his version of being a gap hitter. He is somewhat of an oddity. No one who takes that many good strikes to get down in the count should ever hit for that percentage. I do think he suffered seriously from losing the "catchers strike zone" last year. If you don't think a catcher, maybe the best hitting catcher in MLB history, doesn't get a preferential zone, then you have never umpired. Calling borderline, or worse, strikes on catchers makes for a very long day behind the plate. They wil always get the benefit of the doubt. He has always hit like a machine, everything perfectly repetitive. But it may be time to change that approach, or at the least tweak it.
  22. I will defer to jorgensweet.... Anything I say would be redundant..... But I still will say something. First of all four minus 90's is really really bad. Secondly there are a lot of middling talented players on this roster. Not completely bad players, but not that good either. This group seems to have no Pucket or Hrbek waiting to break thru. And one last thought not often mentioned here. This group seems to be soft, they seem to go thru the motions easily. Maybe it's just me on the outside looking in but that's the way it seems.
  23. . Reusse is an adept baseball guy. He likes baseball at all levels, from town ball on up. I always thought his observations are pretty astute. So I agree with Patrick, as I agree with Thrylos, and Kwak. In essence the Twins have kind of painted themselves into a corner. Normally in spring you sell false hope, the Twins have somehow managed to pay $20m to purchase false hope. In an almost impossible stroke of genius they worsened their terrible outfield, they are contemplating sending their young talented arms to Rochester so they can start some of the past mistakes they made in desperation, and appear to be hinging their hope on the seldom successful "no regression" theory. Never has a 90 plus loss team, with a poor defense and mediocre pitching staff seemed to have so few spots up for grabs. Maybe that fire sale is not such a bad thing. This roster reminds me of entering a Dodge Caravan in the Indy 500. It's dependable, it will last a long time, but you will always end up last.
  24. Thank goodness, this will still leave time to get the field ready for a 7:10 start!
