  1. Not in defense of Souhan, but I had a friend once who was a wrestler in Verne Gagnes stable. He told me it makes no difference if you are a good guy or a bad guy, but the only way you survive and make money is to develop a sticht. The crowd has to love or hate you, but indifference will put you out of work. So goes it for columnists. Souhan is not a baseball writer, he is a pot stirrer. And it worked in this case. But since the pot is boiling and I jumped in: I would leave Buxton in TN. And most of the rest of them. Barring a total collapse by an individual prospect I would start filtering them in after the ASG. Buxton would help the Twins win a couple more games, and likely cause the pitchers to lose less sleep. But, to bring him up now, to fill a hole, with the way this roster is constructed, would be an indication that the Twins think they can contend. To me this would indicate a level of delusion that would be borderline certifiable!
  2. If The Chief says nonconcur is a word, (even though my spell check says it's not), then I respectfully nonconcur! There are six examples listed above, of which one, Hughes, did well and one, Suzuki, did well enough just long enough to get an extension. Pelfrey should be forced to the bullpen, but we don't have the guts to do it. Our 39 year old signee is still adjusting to where we have placed the Target field infield, and Nolasco should have been taking that compound instead of Santana. We would not have missed him on the 80 day list at all!
  3. . Nolasco? Hunter? Corriea?
  4. . He is the Twins Ace. Of course that makes you the Ace of the maybe the worst pitching staff in baseball. There is no doubt Hughes pitched very well last year, and would have pitched even better if he had played with a better defense. But keep In mind the term "last year"! An Ace needs to be repetitive. He also needs to be able to pick up a K in a tight situation, and that is not a Hughes talent. Lastly, while I think the topic is interesting, it again shows the talent level that we have adjusted to. The simple fact that we discuss whether Hughes is a MLB Ace, attests to that.
  5. . This one was much better, the other day he missed the infield entirely! Apparently he was distracted while mentoring a young fan on how to properly hold unto a Polish sausage!
  6. . It seemed like the wind held it down a little!
  7. He mentored him right into a new position!
  8. . Maybe Manvel is too small to be on the Google?
  9. He should have had OJ's attorneys!
  10. . I have found a duck call to be the most effective (aggravating) present so far!
  11. Two weeks? We believe in every man for themselves. The words integrity and candy have no business being used in the same sentence!
  12. . If I remember correctly that did not turn out well for Abel?
  13. Just think, what if the Twins with their 90+ losses last year, actually were playing over their collective heads? .
  14. I am in the camp that thinks Ryan is a good GM for a veteran laden team. He will be able To find you that fill in guy to get you over the hump. In fact he is so fond of veterans he keeps signing them to a non contemder. The Hunter signing wasn't dumb, it was absurd. And signing Dozier for 4 years and not getting anything in return was suspect. This is a insular hidebound orginisation that puts up with mediocricy. I doubt unless Jim Pohlad pulls the trigger it will change.
  15. . Does this mean there won't be a 2 year extension? We could buy out year 41 and 42!
  16. . I made a point similar to this a couple weeks ago, about roster control. But I said it somewhat tongue in cheek. My semi serious take was that Dougy lost out because it would have been very difficult to keep him from wanting his team from last year up here. Maybe I was not so far off? Btw, "business decisions"? Is this Wal Mart? Or MLB?
  17. . The mentoring thing puzzled me for this reason: If you were bringing in a guy, Hunter, to "mentor" then why did every position decision go to players who would not need or benefit from mentoring. The often used joke on TD is that Hunter should be a thousand miles from here, is actually almost a fact. There is no one to mentor. Arcia, maybe? One other thing about Arcia. He is not a good outfielder, no news there. But he is generally far better going to his left. He belongs in RF, in theory he should have help there to his right side, and his arm plays well there.
  18. I tuned in about the 7th inning, and noticed all the empty seats. At first I thought everyone was in line for an alcoholic beverage with a slice of pizza in it? But that might have been an erroneous assumption. I can envision some suburbanite getting home to the spouse and saying, "I just saw the most disgusting thing ever at Target Field". He/she says, "don't tell me you had a pizza drink"? The response, "Well, the drink was bad, but watching the Twins play defense, was disgusting"!
  19. On most teams, when a pitcher gives up a no doubt gopher ball, he is shown reacting by hanging his head in disbelief, or disappointment! When a Twins pitcher gives up any fly ball, his reaction is to hang his head in fear, knowing nothing good can come of this!
  20. You brought up some very interesting points. They might seem minsicule to some, but they make a difference. There is something wrong in Twins Territory. You obviously wrote this before the home opener, but this is as bad as I have ever saw the Twins play. Worse than bad, it's just sloppy!
  21. . I think the number 91 will be in vogue this year again!
  22. Since I seriously doubt the Twins are contender material, and I even more seriously doubt that they would resign Pelf as a starter, I would have left him in the bullpen where he has at least a chance to succeed. Then if he doesn't, mid season trade, or try and keep him in the bull pen next year. As for roster decisions, the Twins seem to place an inordinate amount of consideration on a players character and in house behavior. I too like "nice guys", but I like them even better if they are really good ballplayers!
