  1. Maybe. A guy like Pinto is, at this point, a pretty safe guy but also a low impact guy. He will probably become a solid catcher who we complain about poor framing and pitch calling. Offensively, he'll be a slightly above avg hitter for a catcher - .280/.330/.400ish type lines worth maybe 2-3 WAR. That's not bad but it's not sexy either. A guy like Joey Gallo - #92 on MLB's list is really sexy. He's the only prospect with power comparable to Sano in the minors. He's a heck of a lottery ticket even if it's likely that his pitch recognition problems means he never makes it. But if he does figure that out, he's a true power hitter. I'd probably trade Pinto for Gallo. Rosario is getting knocked for the PED suspension and some still question his ability to stick at second. He might be a strong bat at second or might end up as a sorta utility bench bat that can play some second and back up the corners. Jury is still out on him. Others like him a lot more than mlb.com does. Responding to another post, I think Thorpe is on the radar but just needs more time. A year from now he might very well be like the Red Sox' Owens, who just shot up lists.
  2. Mayo was one of the few guys who ranked Trout over Harper. Frankly, he might have been the only big name to do so (although the others would have had him at #2 or 3 at worst).
  3. I've read in a lot of places scouts/FO types commenting on Berrios work ethic and training (along with stuff). That's great to see and it's good to see Berrios mentioning it himself. I really like this guy, hope he makes it.
  4. I like May quite a bit more than most. I think he'll end up being a much better major leaguer than minor leaguer. I love the durability.
  5. Thanks Steve, very informative. If possible, what did they say about Thorpe's upside at this point?
  6. I don't have a subscription to BA. If someone does can they summarize the chat without violating forum rules? Thanks in advance.
  7. Is the chat available to everyone or just BA subscribers?
  8. Actually, Walker's k-rate was about 21%. I think this will be a big year for him but the Twins have been pretty cautious with him - college guy still hasn't reached high A. His lack of plate discipline probably prevents him from making the majors but, as Jason Parks noted, if he gets it together, he's a first division type player. (And it's not really his strike outs that are the problem - although he k'd way too much for an advanced bat in A ball - but it's his lack of walks that is killing him). Really nice lottery ticket to have, solid 3rd round pick but he's still a long shot.
  9. Wolfson reported that the Twins were watching two Cuban defectors, Misael Siverio and Odrisamer Despaigne. Both are short guys and Despaigne apparently throws a knuckleball but neither would count against the international spending limit b/c of the Cuban exception and both would probably start in AAA or lower.
  10. I like the May ranking - I think a lot of us are under rating him. He's insanely durable - 150ip the last three years - and he has some ability to miss bats. His control can get a bit wonky but he still has #3 upside and his floor is pretty safe - strong bullpen arm. I like him a lot and think he'll end up being a better MLer than minor leaguer.
  11. Is Gilmartin on the 40 man? I'm too lazy to look but he should slot in around #9.
  12. I post at sportshoopla.com. It's pretty much anything goes but it's more general baseball discussion than Twins specific. I'm sure many of us also post at TwinkieTown but it's not that great of a place. Minorleagueball usually has some good prospect threads (and are currently doing a fan top 100 prospect). Unfortunately, twinsdaily is one of the few places that has decent discussions of the Twins minor leagues so you have to put up with some moderator behavior.
  13. Hi all, Does anyone know any reports on Jose Abreu in the Twins rookie league? He seemed to have a pretty strong year but he's already 20 so maybe it's a case of dominating younger players but I suppose it could also be a young man growing into his body. Is he a real prospect?
  14. Why 100? I thought the first positive test was 50?
  15. I think he falls in last of that group - esp when factoring trend lines. Bailey and Masterson will both be younger than Garza is now next offseason. Shields will be 33 so won't get as many years so might be a safer bet. Lester will resign w/Boston. Scherzer will be the prize of next offseason. And there are a few other potentially solid, albeit lesser, arms that could be had - McCarthy, Floyd, Gallardo. I'm not saying Garza wouldn't be nice but I think he's being overrated a bit around here. Although, as someone noted, fangraphs likes him a lot more than b-r.
  16. You're giving Garza way too much credit. 2010 - 204 ip 100 ERA+, 1.7 WAR 2011 - 198 ip 118 ERA+ 2.8 WAR 2012 - 104 ip 105 ERA+ 1.2 WAR 2013 - 155 ip 106 ERA+ 1.4 WAR 4 yr avg - 165ip 107 ERA+ 1.8 WAR. I think Twins fans overrate him b/c of the Young trade but he's never really been a front line starter and he hasn't been close to that since 09.
  17. I won't complain if the Twins signed Garza but I think I'd stay pat for now. Next year might be a better year to go after a top flight pitcher - more will be on the market and I think Garza is over rated - and the Twins will have a better idea of where they stand with Meyer, Gibson, May as well as the bats.
  18. Just an FYI, Parks tweeted that Sano and Buxton were the only Twins in the top 25 (presumably much higher) and Meyer was the only other one that made the top 50 (my guess is the 40-45 area).
  19. Actually, he put those numbers up as the equivalent of a junior. If he was born in the US, he'd be in this years draft.
  20. I think thrylos is right but if Rosario fell off (for PEDs) maybe Jorge sneaks in. On a side note, Thorpe might be gaining a lot of helium this offseason. The scouting reports on him were apparently great and at least a few prospect watchers have commented that he'd be a first round pick (and one to track this season) in the upcoming draft. So maybe BP is ahead of the curve on him. Also, just for fun, the Twins graduated 3 top 100 guys this season in Hicks, Gibson and Arcia. The fact that they can lose those 3 and still be considered one of the best farm systems (if not the best) is really amazing. It'll take a year or two but this team's future is really bright.
  21. It's ok to try and steal signs but it's also ok for the other team to make you pay for it. In his book, he quoted Jack Morris throwing a fastball up and in when the sign indicated changeup low and then turning to yell at the runner that (paraphrasing) if didn't stop relaying signs, one of his players would get killed.
  22. Nope, totally ok under the unwritten rules. Seriously, peruse that website, lots of great stuff there. I absolutely love the unwritten rules and Turbow did a good job of showing how the rules change over time.
  23. Actually, stealing signs is perfectly acceptable within the unwritten rules. Jason Turbow wrote a fantastic book on the unwritten rules - one of my favorite baseball books - and has a great website for it at :http://thebaseballcodes.com/ Here's an article he wrote about the Twins stealing signs from the Tigers: http://thebaseballcodes.com/2009/12/19/joe-mauer-is-a-great-hitter-sign-tipping-not-so-much/ Unfortunately, the video link is gone b/c MLB wanted to protect its rights and kill anything fun on the internet. The NY times even covered it (http://bats.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/10/01/joe-mauer-and-tipping-pitches/?_r=0)
  24. Yeah, he isn't the most fun pitcher to sit through.
  25. Part of what he says makes sense - I think part of the reasons the Twins wanted Pelfrey back were things not relating to his pitching days. He "toughed" it out, he wanted to pitch, etc things like that, I think the Twins (rightly or wrongly) like quite a bit. I always thought that Ryan brought Capps back b/c Capps pitched so much of the year with an injured wrist but wouldn't go to the DL. (I also happen to think Pelfrey is a good gamble at this point of his career and 6m or so per year on him looks safe). And teammates probably do like stability in the clubhouse - I have no idea how much it affects them but I'm sure they like it and Pelfrey, as I heard it, was well-liked by the other pitchers.
