    I honestly think our local sportswriters are pretty good. They aren't perfect but LEN has taken some pretty good shots at Mauer, for instance. But thylos hits the problem right on - if they are too critical they'll lose some access which means less views at startribune.com etc. That said, I think the NFL is much, much worse at this than mlb.

    That's a good point, twinssin. Philip Humber had the same problems after he was abused in college.

    I hoped this is what would happen. Gibson can be a nice complementary piece to our rebuilt team and is a clear part of the future. Deduno is a nice story - and could be pretty effective out of the bullpen - but he's just a journeyman.

    Since we pick at 5, can you give us his top 5? I assume Kolek and Beede are the missing two. mlbpipeline has Marshall at 34. I suppose that means he could be a guy that might slip to us in the early second round.

    I'm not sure how much it helps - I think it might help but maybe not in a measurable way. But it is more fun rooting for a team of characters then a bunch of boring ballplayers.

    I think it depends on what they think of Pinto - does he need another 200 AAA at bats or is it better for him to play twice a week and watch how Suzuki calls game the rest of the time.

    First of, Ventura isn't the Royals top pitching prospect. That's Kyle Zimmer who they are putting restrictions on this year at AA. (http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/royals-put-restrictions-on-zimmer/). But it's also not really a fair comparison. Ventura is a finished product at this point. He threw over 150 innings in the upper minors and majors last year. Meyer missed two months b/c of a shoulder injury and threw about 100 over AA and the AFL. The Royals are also in a position where they are trying to win this year whereas the Twins don't really need to rush Meyer's arbitration clock early.

    Bummer. I really liked the trade that brought him here, even if he was going from the NL to the AL. Figured leaving a hitters park to a pitchers park would more than make up for it but ... I don't think they'll try and pass him through waivers yet. I think they do it later when everyone is dumping players to make it less likely that he gets claimed. He'll probably get another start yet.

    This isn't the first time Gardy has talked about ST roster decisions, I think probably happens most years. Reusse had an article about it when Bill Smith was the GM - Gardy and Smith disagreed on 3 roster spots and Smith "won" on two and gave Gardy something. I can't remember the players. In any event, I don't think it's airing dirty laundry but rather the manager just honestly answering the question. As to the other points - Gardy's actually used the bullpen to starter route before with Santana and Liriano and, if Meyer's on an innings limit, it makes sense to do it sometime this year with him.

    Interesting. Not saying you're wrong but mlbpipeline has him at #23 with his height (something the Twins are really big on) being a real concern. "The biggest questions about Weaver concern his breaking ball and his size. He has an upper-70s slurve that may never become more than an average slider. He isn't especially physical at 6-foot-2 and 170 pounds, though his frame and athleticism do draw some comparisons to Tim Hudson." Frankly, their write up sorta reminds me of Berrios - a nice second pick but not a top 5 pick.

    Well, I think that means the Astros take Rodon #1. Kolek to the Marlins. I'm not sure the White Sox would pass on Beede but if they do, then I think they'd take Hoffman and that would leave the Twins with the pick of the best position player in the draft (college or HS). Not sure who that person will be - right now it's probably Jackson. I think, in this draft which is high on pitching talent, that's a worst case scenario.

    I don't think there's much reason to think a trade is happening. Other teams scout players all the time, esp in ST. Rays are probably just doing due diligence on the Twins in case something comes up during the season. I don't think the Twins will trade Correa until the deadline. They won't want to look like they are punting on the season by trading away last years best pitcher before the games even start. If/when they are out of it at the midpoint, they can trade him (and Willingham). Ryan knows he'll use more than 5 starters this year so it probably doesn't matter that much who the 5 are in April. As the season goes on others will get their chances.

    mlbpipeline has Chavis rated #35 in the draft. Obviously there is tons of movement left but he's the kind of Joe Benson-like talent the Twins could look for with their second pick. "Known as more of a line-drive hitter, he surprisingly won the home run derby at the Perfect Game All-American Classic, beating out noted prep sluggers such as Braxton Davidson, Michael Gettys and Alex Jackson. Chavis consistently makes hard contact at the plate and projects as a possible .275 hitter with 18-20 homers in his prime in the big leagues.     I think there is a happy medium in there. The Radcliff drafts tend toward the "conservative control" theme but that wasn't always true. Radcliff did draft high upside talent like Garza, who fell to him, but also guys like Johnson, Durbin, Waldrop, Rainville (both got injured but both were well regarded HS arms at the time). And he also used a 2nd rounder on Crain. Johnson has gone the other way with only Wimmers being the "traditional" Twins type pick. He's picked tons of flamethrowers (Boer, Hunt, Gutierrez, Bullock, Bashore, etc) since taking over and only Gibson has made it. My opinion is that the Twins had a pretty decent strategy for a bit (and the WAR value of the players they drafted over time holds up pretty well). They used BPA in the first round, which was usually a position player, and focused on and then grabbed underrated guys - usually guys with lower velocity but strong control - in later rounds that would help out. In any event, the Johnson drafts have not produced any pitching for the Twins yet.

Fernando Romero 18. Gonzalez Guys like Eades, Turner, Gilmartin, Tonkin, Jones didn't make the top 20. Nice depth.

    I'm not sure that first sentence is completely correct. They didn't have any top picks for most of that time period. The fact that they got some decent seasons out of 2nd round (or later) pitchers like Slowey, Baker, Blackburn, Duensing, Swarzak is a good thing. Since the Johnson fiasco in 2000 (a high upside pick) the only pitchers they took in the first round were all in the 20s. Waldrop got hurt, Perkins turned into a good closer, Garza has had a nice career and Gutierrez never made it. They took a few more in the supp rounds and more recent first round picks like Gibson, Wimmers (who looks like a bust) it's too early to say. But I don't think the Twins draft control guys strategy failed. They got some good pitcher years out of it. (Deron Johnson seemed to change that strategy when he took over in 08 and Gibson is the only pitcher he's drafted that has made the majors).

    I'm hoping for a log jam at the top. Right now there are 4 pitchers (Rodon, Hoffman, Beede and Kolek) that I'd be happy the Twins getting. I think Beede and Rodon are my favorite two.

    I think of the major rankers, I like them in this order: Callis and Mayo at mlbpipeline Sickels at minorleagueball Parks KLaw BA Fangraphs BA took a big hit when Callis left them. I don't really care much for KLaw but he's at ESPN so ... (And, in fairness, he was on a lot of rookie ball guys like Arcia and Rosario before others). Parks, I think, is better than Klaw and he has a lot more stuff available out there. Callis and Mayo are really good - I liked Mayo when it was just him and adding Callis gave mlb.com the best prospect site on the net which I'm sure is what they were after. Sickels has been doing pretty good work for years. I think the main thing I like is content and availability and the top 3 have a lot more of it then the bottom three. Parks' chats at BP are pretty long and his answers are a lot more thorough than Klaw's at ESPN even if a lot of stuff is still hidden behind a paywall.

    I'm really starting to dislike those stupid extra picks that MLB put into the end of the first round for low revenue teams. I'd really like to have a second pick in the 30s to nab a Berrios type talent but that's unlikely now.

    No, he's still a rookie. Just very surprised he's not on any of their lists. Callis and Mayo at mlb.com's great mlbpipeline didn't rank him either but Parks at baseball prospectus ranked him #56.

    BA listed all the players that made someones top 150 but missed the overall top 100. Four Twins were listed in that group - Rosario, Thorpe, Berrios and May. Surprising, to me, was that no one at BA listed Josmil Pinto among the top 150 prospects in baseball. http://www.baseballamerica.com/majors/ask-ba-3/ Berrios had the fourth highest ballot vote - coming in 69 on someones ballot - of the players that didn't make the top 100 (doesn't mean he was on the most ballots, just that on one, he was ranked pretty high).
