  1. He also added Luis Castillo for a couple prospects. I'm not as concerned about this as you are. Trading prospects while rebuilding is dicey. Not saying it shouldn't be done but it has to be a pretty good deal. And teams that are trading for prospects (and supplying vets in return) are usually other bad teams that are rebuilding, so there isn't always a good fit. A contending team usually isn't going to give up a good ML player for a prospect while they think they can that ML player can help them now (see Texas last year).
  2. Just last year the Diamondbacks traded Bauer, who looks likely to bust, for a pretty decent shortstop prospect. Andrus was part of the Teixeira deal a few years back. The Red Sox traded away Hanley Ramirez (and Anibal Sanchez) for Beckett. The Twins could move Sano for most any shortstop in the minors if they wanted to.
  3. Springer is 4 years older than Sano. Positional difficulty should be considered, I suppose, but at the end of the day the Astros ignored the BPA and that was probably a big mistake. Callis at BA (now mlb.com) had noted several times that the Astros could have drafted both Buxton and McCullers (but not Ruiz).
  4. That'd be my thinking. Let him stick behind the plate as long as he could.
  5. We should probably be talking about HS C/OF Alex Jackson as well. Twins love toolsy prep bats and, on mlb.com's list, he's currently the best HS bat in the country. Jacob Gatewood, another toolsy HS bat, could be an exciting pick, too. He probably ends up at 3rd but could be a 30 homerun guy.
  6. I was on the Buxton bandwagon. Goldstein at BP had a Q/A chat where someone asked him what the Twins should do and he responded "Hope the Astros pass on Buxton." The SI article was nice - I actually posted a link to it that led to some really intense discussions here. But I just thought that he was too good of a talent to pass on for (in my view) some questionable pitchers.
  7. Not Seth but I have a few guesses. First, his walk rates and power were just fine in AA but he did have some strike out issues and his avg fell to .236. Nothing wrong with letting him get a little more experience in AA. Second, it lets Sano and Buxton be on the same team. Third, the Twins have had no concerns promoting directly from AA (as have many other teams). And fourth, AAA is sometimes noted for its negative atmosphere as it is full of players who can't quite stick in the majors or feel they got a screw job by their team.
  8. Nice write up Seth. If both he and Buxton start the year together at AA ... wow. Can you imagine how many scouts would be at all those games? Long term, I love Sano. He might struggle a bit at first but his power - esp his RH bat - should play well in TF.
  9. Yeah, he'd be a very Twins pick.
  10. Way too early to speculate but ... Nick Burdi, relief pitcher that the Twins drafted once before. Throws high 90s and should be a quick to the majors closer. Can't start. Seems like a Deron Johnson type pick. Might not be there at 40-something.
  11. I'll just echo most people's thoughts and say that the development of the young future foundation - Gibson, Meyer, May, Arcia, Hicks, Buxton, Sano, Dozier, etc - is the most important thing. I hope that Ryan swings a few more good trades and he should have a few assets in Hammer, Correa, Perkins and maybe Plouffe.
  12. Is there a potential Bryant in this draft? A college slugger that might sneak into the top 5? From what I've seen the best college power is the Indiana catcher and Virginia OF Derek Fisher but I'm not sure if either of them could sneak up.
  13. Just for clarification, mlb's write up on him lists him as a RHP.
  14. One other point on the draft - the Marlins at #2 also have three other picks in the 30-40 range and a really cheap owner. They could very well underdraft at 2 to save some money for other guys and let a better player slip by them.
  15. Yeah, there's going to be a lot of movement on these lists. IIRC, a year ago guys like Gray and Shipley ended up with a lot of helium and Manaea fell. The year before, Zimmer flew up draft boards. So a lot will change. I've read some nice things about a Fl HS pitcher from Haiti named Touki Toussaint who could easily put himself into the mix at #5. I'd also bet that the Twins are scouting Nick Gordon a lot - his dad and brother both played in the majors (they love bloodlines) and he's currently in a FL HS and the Twins have taken a lot of kids from southwest highschools these last few drafts (Buxton, Goodrum, Boyd, etc). And, lastly, it looks like Michael Gettys is the top Georgia high schooler this year and compares somewhat favorably to Meadows/Frazier last year. Looks like it'll be a pretty solid, deep draft. Hopefully we get something great out of it.
  16. http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/talking-al-prospects-on-mlb-tonight/ The link has a 4 min segment where BA and mlb.tv guys talk prospects in the Central. Usual stuff - Twins are best in central, Buxton is a unique type of player, Sano is a top prospect himself. Solid group. BA seems to list Berrios as our #5 prospect but that might have just been a list of names and not a specific order.
  17. I think we'll be slightly better this year - at least for a bit although we might fall off in the second half when they trade a bunch of guys (I think we'll trade Hammer, Correa and Perkins this year and maybe another bullpen arm. And Plouffe could go too). I suspect we'll go something like 72-90. I think our pitching staff will be adequate and keep the team in games but the offense will lag behind. But the games should be a lot more fun to watch, esp when the young guys come up in the second half and we get to see an OF of (hopefully) Hicks, Buxton and Arcia in Sept and watch Sano hit homers after the super 2 cut off date and Meyer on the mound. They'll struggle but the foundation will be set.
  18. There's a lot wrong with this post including the fact that Radcliff wasn't in charge of the draft for some of these guys or taking into account payroll issues the Pohlad family put on the FO. If you look at the WAR of Radcliff's picks over time, the Twins have drafted pretty well while he was running the draft.
  19. Considering we graduated three top 100 guys off of Laws list last year (Hicks, Gibson and Arcia) it's remarkable how strong the system still is.
  20. I don't have a huge problem with Sano's ranking. I think Buxton is clearly #1 and Bogaerts/OT #2/3. Then I think there are about 8 guys you can put into 4-12 into any reasonable order and I was a bit surprised not to see Sano in there. But BP seems to have done a run of shortstops and RHP before Sano. Sano's still the top ranked thirdbaseman and BP knocked a bunch of high k guys a bit - Bryant and Springer.
  21. An interesting side note was the idea that working with Mauer helped him with plate discipline. Torii Hunter actually said the same thing and saw an improvement in his obp. So maybe it's more than lip service.
  22. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=22670 Buxton - 1 Sano - 14 Meyer - 32 Stewart - 54 Pinto - 56 Rosario - 60 Berrios - 75 Thorpe - 101 Eight players is pretty good. Astros had 5, Red Sox 6, Cubs and Pirates 7. Surprised on how low Sano and Stewart were.
