  1. Does anyone know which compensation picks can be traded, what numbers they are in this draft and, lastly, if the Twins have had any conversations about trading to get one?
  2. minorleagueball has their mock draft up - http://www.minorleagueball.com/2014/5/19/5724288/2014-mlb-mock-draft-version-2 This one looks pretty accurate to me - talent going more or less in order with Twins taking Gordon.
  3. Yeah, I am really surprised on how poorly Span has been in Washington. I thought he'd hit better in the NL.
  4. ERA in the minors isn't all that important - it'd be a bit better with a little luck and/or better defense. Right now what's important is his ability to limit walks, which has been great since the AFL.
  5. AJ, Buchanan, Span, Revere, Milton, Kelly, Knoblauch, Tyler, Keilty, Bullock ...
  6. Actually, his OPS from July to the end of Sept was .940 and that was really mostly because of a hot two week window in July where he hit 8 home runs. Over the last two months of the season, his OPS was .795 (low obp, high slug), and he was worse in the playoffs. He was 16th on the 2002 team in WAR.
  7. I'm sure they talked about it with him in the minors. The links at twinkietown show that it was a known issue then. But at the same time, if a guy is getting by on less work but still putting up a .844 OPS in CF while being over 2 years younger than the avg age of a AA league, the results might have masked the preparation effort.
  8. I know this is probably tongue in cheek but ... Jeremy had asked what kind of draft articles we wanted and many of us said we wanted to have better discussions about the possible second round picks. We've already had enough discussion about the first pick. And Jeremy's obviously doing some hardwork to do this so I'm glad he put this out there, even if Marshall isn't our pick.
  9. That would be a really surprising draft to me - not Gordon but Jackson going 2nd. I can't see cheap Miami nabbing a Boras client when they've got a bunch of big time pitching prospects to go with as well as local talent that could be taken there for small savings. They also have a few extra picks in the 30-40 range and I'm sure Boras would want some of that money to go to his guy.
  10. Actually, he sat out a couple days last week when he felt pain in the wrist so he hasn't been playing every day for two weeks. I think the Twins are right to let him stay in AAA until he's both healthy and gotten his timing back - he hasn't exactly dominated AAA. Let Parmelee get a few ML at bats in the meantime.
  11. 15th in steals (1165) but 9th in caught stealing (487). Also, they are second to the Yankees in grounding into double plays - mostly b/c they don't strike out that much and hit a lot of singles - 25th in SO (as hitters, a good thing), 16th in walks (as hitters).
  12. Twinkietown had an article on this, too. http://www.twinkietown.com/2014/5/15/5719954/is-aaron-hicks-too-passive Reading the article, I don't think any of Gardy's comments were that bad - although this thread is absolutely going to blow up with "Gardy being mean to young guys" stuff. Like with Morneau in 06, I'm sure there were a lot of conversations in private before it came to this. Hicks is 24 and really, really bad. He shouldn't be this bad and, as Jessie at TT noted, Hicks' passivity isn't something only the Twins have noted.
  13. Reed sounds a lot like Hudson Boyd, which could be a good thing - i.e. the Twins have drafted that body type before, or bad - Boyd has been bad. Marshall sounds intriguing as does Davis. Twins have been scouting GA like crazy the last few years - I remember reading an article years ago about them wanting to improve scouting in that area and they hired that wonderful scout from Tampa and put Ryan in charge of regional scouting before he came back as GM. So they might really like Marshall. I wonder if Gettys could fall to them? They've also drafted a lot of relief pitchers in the 2nd round under Deron Johnson - maybe Lindgren? I don't think Burdi falls that far but if he did, I think they'd jump on him.
  14. Here's how mlbpipeline ranks these guys: Marshall 58 Reed 61 Davis 66 Cederoth 52 Forbes 51 Just for fun, the 2011 draft rankings of our picks were Michael ranked at 31 (they only went 50 deep). In 2012 it was Buxton 1, Berrios 46, Walker 50, Chargois 67, Melatokis 91. Last year it was Stewart 7, Eades 29, Gonzalez 98 in the top 100. That doesn't tell us much other than their lists get a bit crazy pretty quickly. Bobby Wuhl, for instance, was ranked #30 on their list and fell to Oakland in the 5th round.
  15. Actually, since Gardy took over, the Twins are 26th in the majors in IBB and 21st in sac bunts. (They also are #1 in bunt hit percentage but only middle of the road on the actual number of bunt hits).
  16. Actually, it was 22 innings over three seasons - he missed all of 09.
  17. And those are pretty good reasons that rate stats can give false information when using them out of context. Slowey was a bad pitcher for us and a worse one in Miami - he's managed .3 WAR and been moved to the pen. Frankly, that the Twins got any value out of him and Blackburn should be considered a positive on them, in my opinion.
  18. Actually, he was up last week and pitched 5 innings out of the bullpen in a blowout loss. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.cgi?id=bakersc02&t=p&year=2014
  19. Lists have been posted several times: Silva, Santana, Milton, Reyes, Nathan, Guerrier, Hawkins, Everyday Eddie, Romero, Baker, Rincon, Slowey, Mays. And that doesn't get into the number of guys who were here for 20 innings etc that seems to dominate the other lists.
  20. From Mayo/Callis: "Freeland scuffled at times during his first two years at Evansville, going a combined 8-13 with a 4.44 ERA, before breaking out in the Cape Cod League last summer. He led college baseball's top summer league in strikeouts (48) and K-to-BB ratio (48-to-4), as hitters had trouble dealing with his fastball and slider. The same has been true this spring, when he has dominated once again. Batters react to Freeland's fastball as if he's throwing harder than 90-93 mph, because he has some deception in his delivery and the pitch has heavy life, and he can reach 95-96. He throws a true slider in the low 80s and can turn it into more of a mid-80s cutter at times. He'll also display an average changeup at times, getting good sink on it. Freeland throws from a lower arm angle and features more effort in his delivery than scouts like to see in a starter. But he should be able to work out of a rotation in pro ball because he has two swing-and-miss pitches and throws strikes." Interesting pick. He's a lefty as well. I'd be ok with that.
  21. I should also point out that his GO/AO is 0.74 but I honestly don't know if that's a good number or not. His home runs though are down this year.
  22. May outpitched Bauer last night and on the season is now 2-3 4.11era, 35 ip, 41K, 13 walks 2 HR. His era could be a bit lower with some better defense/luck. The control though is the thing and that looks good. Right now his rate stats are 10.5 k/9, 3.3 bb/9 and 3.15 k/bb - all excellent numbers for us. He's striking out nearly 30% of the batters he's faced and walking only 9%. Right now, he's actually outpitching Alex Meyer. He doesn't have Meyer's ceiling but it's looking more likely that he can be a solid innings eating #3 type.
  23. http://www.sporcle.com/games/g/mlbhalloffamers Probably been posted before, not sure. I got 127 my first try. Larkin was my biggest miss.
  24. One of the great side effects of PED use was to allow careers to last longer than normal aging patterns suggested. But let's not let this thread get way off track
  25. And one that was also linked to PEDs.
