  1. Interesting mock draft - Zimmer going before Jackson. I think I still want Jackson over Gordon but I'll trust the FO.
  2. He wasn't that bad - he did move away from the piranhas and created the 2010 team. That team was arguably our best team since 91. Anyhow, the Vikings didn't officially have a GM between Lynn and Spielman but there were a lot of bad moves in that time span. I forget the name of the guy they fired who drafted Tarvaris Jackson (and called him a "boy"). The North Stars had some pretty bad years there too. And Kevin McHale couldn't build a team around KG.
  3. And Trevor did an interview for Twins Daily: http://www.twinsdaily.com/content.php/2936-Ten-Questions-with-Trevor-May
  4. His twitter says it happened but nothing else so I imagine it must be a baseball related decision. Perhaps (probably likely) that his stuff isn't as nice as his stat line. https://twitter.com/AJMalinowski24
  5. He'll give up a few more hits but we're also in ridiculously small sample sizes yet. If he had given up 10 more hits, his h/9 would be well over 9, instead of 5.5. With May, the big issue will always be control - if he's walking 1 batter for every three he's striking out, we're ok. He's going to eat innings, he's durable. He'll give up some hits and he projects as a solid middle of the rotation arm. His best seasons might be sort of like a healthy Aaron Harang type season.
  6. http://www.baseballamerica.com/international/which-teams-have-signed-the-most-international-prospects-2/ Badler's article gives credit to Latin American scouting coordinator Fred Guerrero and international scouting coordinator Howard Norsetter for their work in making the Twins big players in international free agency. Only the Rangers and Red Sox have more international players in the BA prospect handbook than the Twins. Badler notes successes like Arcia and Pinto as well as low minors players like Thorpe and Polanco.
  7. This thread got pretty ridiculous. On the plus side, here's a nice article on sign stealing from Mr. Turbow.
  8. I'm not sure how much command can be coached. Too some extent, I think it can - see Meyer and May's improvement - but Shooter Hunt also says "hello".
  9. This is what the Astros scouting director says of the talent in this years draft: “It’s a good class. There’s a lot of high school pitching this year. I’d say that’s the main thing that characterizes the class this year. There’s a lot of high school pitchers that are impact arms at the top and there’s a lot of depth to the class. I think we’re going to see several first rounders who are high school pitchers this year. I would also say there’s some power bats in the college ranks, guys who play a corner position – maybe third base, first, left field, right field in college and have done some damage during the college season. Those are really the two groups of players that stand out in this class. “Overall we’re pleased with the level of talent. I think it’s probably a notch better than last year’s class, it’s a little stronger and we’re pretty happy about that because not only do we have the 1-1 pick, but we have three in the top 50.”
  10. Probably b/c fans tend to only consider that number of players. Last years draft wasn't 3 deep - several scouts thought Stewart should go 1-1. Last year's draft did have 3 college players in consideration for the top but Stewart and Frazier were both constantly in the discussion. The Twins will get a pretty good player again at #5.
  11. In fairness, Herrmann is the 25th man and plays corner OF more than catches and Pinto is the everyday DH.
  12. I think Meyer is more likely to be held back for Super 2 status than May. And May probably won't be on any sort of innings limit than Meyer.
  13. Came out a bit late this year but here's the link: http://www.minorleagueball.com/2014/5/1/5640414/top-150-prospects-for-2014-baseball-john-sickels Buxton is not #1 on his list. Sano is #21 (takes injury into account), Meyer 27, Stewart 64, Pinto 111, Rosario 119, Berrios 124, Polanco 138.
  14. I gotta admit, I wish Stewart was dominating A ball just a bit more. And I say that realizing he has a sub 1.000 whip, 2.81 era and is about 3 years younger than the avg pitcher in the midwest league.
  15. We lost some of the discussion on here last week but Trevor had another outstanding outing last night - 6ip, 3h, 1bb, 11k 104 pitches. He also managed to get more ground balls than fly balls. In 5 starts, he's only had one real dud (his second start wasn't as bad as the numbers suggested). He's walking 3 BB/9 and has a 11.5 k/9. Opponents are batting .179/.240/.279 off of him. We need a little more consistency from him but it's quite possible that he'll be up before Meyer.
  16. I'm sure he got insurance for his senior year which covered some of that. And I don't think it makes a lot of sense for a college player to worry about getting the big paycheck from arbitration/free agency at the cost of his first contract. In a best case scenario for Appel, he would have ended up debuting at the same age, regardless of the extra college year. In the worst case, he never makes the adjustment to MLB and doesn't make the majors.
  17. Yeah, that's impressive but it's also a hitters league - I believe he's around 30th in each of those triple slash categories (Buxton, for comparison, was also 19 last year in A+ and was among the leaders in his league in those categories, which was also more of a pitcher's league). He's also sat out about a week with a minor injury. I wasn't trying to disparage Correa, he's a legit prospect and a better one than Appel.
  18. Actually, it worked out for Appel - going back to school netted him several more millions than if he had signed with the Pirates (it also helped the Twins net Stewart by adding one more pick into the 2013 draft).
  19. I agree that TF seems better for RH pull power - which is one reason I'd like the Twins to draft Jackson.
  20. http://thebaseballcodes.com/2014/04/28/as-push-back-on-porter-houston-pilot-pops/ I forgot to post this but here is the finale to the A's/Astros grudge, link has video to the incident. In short, A's hit the Astros lead off man in the butt in the top of the 9th in a game they were leading 12-5. A's websites rejoiced - http://www.athleticsnation.com/2014/4/25/5655000/recap-oakland-athletics-beat-astros-12-5-josh-donaldson-daric-barton
  21. Not sure if anyone saw this from mlbpipeline: http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/26271672/v32463709/top-prospects-ryan-eades-rhp-min/?c_id=mlb
  22. I agree with Mike. Take BPA even if that's a HS short stop. (I hope it's not). I'm really intrigued by Hoffman. He'll miss a few starts but then make a few before the draft. If he doesn't have any set backs in those starts, the Cubs will have a real tough decision to make between him and Jackson. The Cubs system is absolutely loaded with hitters right now - I think they have 4 bats in most top 50 lists. Earlier this season they were linked to Beede but he has been less than impressive lately. I think they'd jump at a healthy Hoffman leaving us with Jackson.
  23. He seems to have given 9k total and the last time was over a decade ago. Not sure that's "huge money."
