  1. I think the Twins rookie hazing has been pretty minor - dressing them up in costumes, run errands for the vets, etc. I remember reading articles about how well Kirby dealt with young guys coming up, for instance. He'd buy them suits, take them to dinner but also made sure they used the stipends to tip the clubhouse guys, stuff like that.
  2. Speaking of the Astros, who pick at #2 and #5. It'll be interesting to see how much they burned bridges with Casey Close who is representing a bunch of the top talents in this draft (as is Boras). Uncertainty in those relationships might mean that they pick a lessor talent at 5 and spread money around down the draft. And, while the draft is miles away and they should draft BPA, rumors on Astros blogs are that they are really leaning toward a college pitcher at #2.
  3. Yeah, that's my dream too. **** the Astros.
  4. http://deadspin.com/holy-crap-jesus-montero-is-in-shape-1687055215 Somehow he dropped 40 pounds and it looks like it was mostly fat. I'd bet a lot of money that a PED or two was used to drop that weight (didn't Vargas get caught using something like that?) but I hope he gets his stuff together. His ice cream incident was pretty embarrassing and it would be nice if that wasn't how people end up remembering him.
  5. Keith Law said in his chat a few weeks ago that Stewart was still more of a thrower than a pitcher when the Twins took him, wasn't concerned about the strike outs and thought the Twins were doing a "hell of a job" with his development. So don't be too concerned about his placement at this time. If he develops like a lot of people think, he still has front of the rotation potential and he'll be high on these lists next year. He's a competitive young man, maybe he takes not being on the BA list as a slight and uses it to have a better year.
  6. Well, yeah, maybe with a better avg but less HRs. But Dozier was a 5 WAR guy last year and Profar was a lot better defensively. If he could have stayed healthy, he could have been putting up those kinds of seasons at 21 or 22. That's easily a #1 prospect.
  7. http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/55243/rangers-profar-to-have-shoulder-surgery Profar was the #1 prospect in baseball and got a cup of coffee in the majors at 19 but his last couple years have been destroyed by injury. He's still just 22 but hasn't played in a professional game since 2013 and is now out indefinitely.
  8. Baseball America has a small little video review of Gordon http://www.baseballamerica.com/videos/scouts-video-view-nick-gordon/
  9. Also, it looks like they had both Stewart and Polanco on their 15 that just missed, so that's 8 Twins mentioned. Not bad. "Rays catcher Justin O’Conner (great arm, but still has work to do at the plate), Twins shortstop Jorge Polanco (how much impact will he make?), Padres catcher Austin Hedges (exceptional defense, but the bat has stagnated) and White Sox second baseman Micah Johnson (needs to show his speed has returned after hamstring issues) also ended up just on the outside looking in."
  10. I wouldn't worry that much about Stewart's ranking. It would be better if he was higher but mlb.com, BP, fangraphs and Klaw all had him considerably higher. If Stewart is the guy they all (and we all) think, he'll be high up BA's list next year. And remember that Callis, the man behind BA for 20 years, is now at mlb.com.

  12. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/02/d-backs-agree-to-new-television-contract.html "Arizona’s current television contract, which expires at season’s end, has an average annual value of about $31MM per year, Piecoro notes. He adds that the new contract is believed to at least triple that amount. It’s unclear how much the total value of the contract is, because the length of the deal isn’t currently known, but club officials have recently said they were discussing lengths in the 15- to 20-year range. Piecoro reports that there are indications that the new deal is indeed in line with those previously discussed parameters, which would suggest the total value is at least $1.4 billion." Anyone know what the Twins current deal is and when it expires? With our luck, it'll happen after the TV deals burst.
  13. Interesting article. I do wonder how Arcia's splits play into this. He killed righties last year but lefties were destroying him. His OBP against righties was higher than his slg % against lefties! I think that makes me a bit more confident that his k% will go down - either he hits lefties better or he starts being platooned against them.
  14. Probably nothing wrong with it but calling it "neuroscouting" seems like something a D-Bag would come up with.
  15. It's generally considered that he played pretty badly in the games they had to lose (6 for 21 as opposed to the 6-11 in the games they tried to win) and played pretty passive defense.
  16. Well, if nothing else, this reminded me of how much I loved Puckett.
  17. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=25592 Twins #2 behind the Cubs. KC 14 Cle 17 Chi 18 Det 30 "State of the System: After resting atop these rankings in 2014, the Twins managed to retain their lofty title despite injury-marred seasons from two of the game’s elite prospects, Byron Buxton and Miguel Sano. Even with their arrivals delayed due to injury, both prospects headline an impressive crop of talent that was augmented by top picks Nick Gordon and Nick Burdi; both of whom offer impact potential. When combined with the continued progress of Alex Meyer, Kohl Stewart, Jose Berrios, and Lewis Thorpe, and depth provided by the likes of Eddie Rosario and Trevor May, the Twins boast an enviable collection of talent with the potential to push them back up the Central Division standings in the years to come."
  18. I think you are giving Pettitte far too much credit. He only admitted to what had been publicly revealed and was caught lying about that twice. "We want to think the best of him. Everybody does. People seem to see Pettitte as a generally honest and minor character in baseball’s PED scandal. Ask a moderate baseball fan who was named in the Mitchell Report — Sammy Sosa or Andy Pettitte? I’m thinking most will say Sosa, which is the wrong answer. Ask any baseball fan which pitcher denied using HGH, admitted using only twice but never more, admitted later than he actually used it another time, and I suspect Pettitte will not be the first guess." I'm glad Knobby did this. Pettitte cheated and made millions for it. He made the competition unfair and that hurt other teams, including the Twins, whom he killed in the post season. Yankees want to honor a POS like that, fine. But it's also good that people are reminded what a POS he is in the first place.
  19. This is part of the ST tradition that I enjoy - the article about some 24 year old in A+. Say what you want about Reusse, he seems to love baseball. http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/291926801.html
  20. Ryan traded a ton of guys at or near the peak of their value - Revere, Span, AJ, Milton, Knobby. Kielty, Buchanan, Romero etc.
  21. I'm a little blah on Beuhler. I don't want to read about another "too short" RHP. Bickford certainly could jump into top 6 consideration.
  22. Obviously, it's a long way off yet but mlb.com's list is pretty nice for us. There are some interesting pitchers who will certainly be available at #6. I want Aiken but Funkhowser, Kirby, and Matuella are all pretty intriguing college arms. It's unlikely that all 4 are gone when we pick and other guys like SS Swanson or Daz Cameron (#2 on my wish list after Aiken) could be taken if we go with a bat. This looks like a deeper draft then last year's draft was (with the usual caveat that it's a long way off and some will fall and others will rise and injuries will knock a few out).
  23. Yeah, I figured this was one of the lines built more on how people will bet than on what the team is more likely to finish.
  24. Yeah, that seemed low. But that also might be a reflection of where the betting money comes from (and doesn't come from).
