  1. And to add to what Levithan said, this doesn't just happen to famous people. Tons of young people - mostly girls - are harassed horrifically by people over the internet. The attitude shouldn't be "don't let girls on the net unless they are ready for sexual innuendo" - the answer should be to shame and punish the asshats who act like that. Here in MN just a few weeks ago a dad learned that his 11 year old daughter was being harassed by two idiot bullies at her school. The school didn't do anything until he went public.
  2. http://deadspin.com/curt-schilling-goes-dadmode-on-twitter-trolls-bashing-h-1688969687 Don't really care about Schilling but this is a good story - he tweeted his congratulations to his daughter for getting into college. Several people tweeted some pretty bad things in response and a lot of sexual references to his daughter. He outed two of the jerks and they are now dealing with their new fame.
  3. I like this quote: "These swing issues are usually fixable and often work themselves out with maturity; this toolset isn’t easy to find. Javier is a prospect where how much you’re willing to pay will be determined by how coachable he is in your private workouts, how big his parents are (as a proxy for how much weight/strength he’ll add) and other broad indicators, because the ability is here and he plays the right position, but a lot of work is needed so you need to know how likely he is to make the adjustments."
  4. Yeah, I think when Sano comes up, Plouffe can be moved to LF, RF, DH or 1B if we decide to keep him. Ideally, those 4 positions are locked down and we get the great problem of too much talent. But if he's playing well, he'll be worth a lot on the market anyway. I don't think the Twins are going to trade Sano to keep Plouffe, for a variety of reasons.
  5. http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/white-sox/post/_/id/23010/sale-looking-less-likely-for-opening-day White Sox ace Chris Sale broke his foot jumping out of a truck. There's probably a joke there. His injury might open a spot for Carlos Rodon (who I still can't believe fell to #3 in the stupid draft - Houston and Miami will regret that) to make the rotation out of ST.
  6. Yep, you're right, I'm wrong. Technically they were even teammates on the Tigers. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/beanebi01.shtml http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/beanbi01.shtml
  7. Pretty sure that's a different Billy Beane - not the A's GM. Billy Beane the player is famous for coming out of the closet after he retired.
  8. I'm not sure. My first guess would be that the various quality of umpiring would have a bigger impact than framing. I suppose one could look to see if a team gets a higher than expected % of called strikes - I think some sites track those statistics.
  9. Give Hicks credit, he got sent down to AA and didn't pout - he just hit his way out of the EL. I would prefer that he starts at AAA and gets confidence hitting there but it's not going to happen so hopefully he does well.
  10. This is the other baseball thread, lots of stuff gets posted here - there are currently threads on Profar, Hamilton, minority managers, Montero etc. Last year, discussions on the Astros draft, Appel's struggles, unwritten rules and Yankee spending were all huge threads.
  11. Yeah, he's always struck me in a bad way, as I alluded to above. Before TD, I used to read him but I haven't for years except for his prospect lists - and give him credit, he does more than just 20 guys. That does take some hard work. But his overall tone - both in covering baseball and in different areas - has always made me think poorly of him as a person, regardless of his what he is actually saying.
  12. Yeah, I agree with this. It's incredible how many excuses people have given him over the years. I like the guy and I think he should get into the HOF but he has some considerable downside at this point in his career.
  13. I'm not sure we should expect much more from Mauer. He'll be 32 next year, I don't think it's reasonable to expect him to be something else now. He doesn't seem the type of guy who will age well. According to BP, he averages missing about 38 games/season to injuries so I don't really expect him to play more than 130 games now. His krate has moved in the wrong direction while his walk rate has gone down the last several years. He wasn't unlucky last year, his babip was right around career norms. So I think he's adjusting to shifts by losing power and not going for the gaps. I think he'll have slightly better numbers than last year but he's never going to be an elite player again, maybe a .300/.370/.400 3 WAR-ish line?

  15. fangraphs chat today, McDaniel listed his top 5 for the draft (way too early): 1. Brandon Rodgers T-2. Dillon Tate and Brady Aiken 4. Mike Matuella 5. Any one of about 10-12 guys
  16. Marrying your wife is #1, I assume?
  17. 25 and younger is just as arbitrary as rookie status. I suppose something like 28 and under would suggest players still in or before their prime.
  18. Lasik?
  19. I think Hunter's best "intangible" facotrs would be making players comfortable so that they can succeed. He's not going to teach them to hit a slider in the dirt (although maybe he says "if it has a red dot, don't swing") but he might help them learn to deal with failure/life on the road/pressure of ml lifestyle that isn't directly related to coaching. Look at the yahoo.com article on Rasmus - he has all the talent in the world but something isn't kicking and the author suggested an inability to make adjustments and tuning out his coaches. Maybe a guy like Hicks needs a guy like Hunter around to just show him how to keep a bad at-bat out of his head or how to prepare for Verlander.
  20. On Gordon, even if he can't stick at short, the BA scout compared him to Orlando Hudson, which would be a pretty nice player. Obviously, he's years away so we don't have to worry about being blocked by X player for a long time. I think, even if he is Hudson, that having a solid MIer at second base isn't the worst outcome. Does anyone know how many more chances a shortstop gets over a secondbaseman on average?
  21. Yeah, I agree. He seems like an unhappy guy and it reflects in his writing - except, I guess, when he's writing about his latest celebrity crush. He's sorta creepy, really. Anyhow, it's a prospect list so it's worth reading.
  22. Amazingly, he never got a hit in any at-bat last year when he was up 3-0, even though he swung at the 3-0 pitch nearly half the time. Fun little article that, of course, means nothing. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/oswaldo-arcia-and-the-relentless-3-0-hack/
  23. On Gordon, most prospect guys - BP, mlb.com, Klaw - seem pretty confident about his ability to stick at short. I'm sure there are some reports out there that question his ability to stick but I think it's a minority view and a pretty small one at that. BA had a video scout on him - http://www.baseballamerica.com/videos/scouts-video-view-nick-gordon/ - and they think he can stick but if he moves to second, think "Orlando Hudson - type", which is just fine.
  24. Interesting guy at 6. I don't know enough to say anything one way or another but a short HS pitcher doesn't seem the Twins M.O. I think if they go the HS route, they'd feel more comfortable with a guy like Cameron.
  25. Yeah, in the long run, I think this ends up being "Sano's team" from all I've read about him. He's loud (in a good way), popular with teammates, cocky (again, in a good way) and competitive both team-wise and individually (meaning, I think he'd be upset if the team had a 6-game losing streak). Hopefully, he gets healthy and starts crushing balls into TF soon.
