  1. I missed this but about two weeks ago they made a few changes to the draft - 1) It'll move the draft from the middle of June to July 1st. 2) The signing deadline - July 15 - stays the same. So not as much time to negotiate with draft picks. http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/01/21/mlb-is-moving-the-amateur-draft-from-june-to-july/
  2. http://deadspin.com/wmu-boosters-wife-sues-message-board-posters-over-****-1684191151 "Bonnie Zeigler, a prominent Western Michigan University booster's wife, who has filed a lawsuit against three men for defaming her on a WMU football message board. Specifically, she is suing the men for posting rumors about her sleeping with WMU head coach P.J. Fleck." A lot of people better hope Gardy and Nick Punto don't get any ideas about this ....
  3. I don't think they pumped in any noise. I also think Ron Gant's momentum caused him to fall of the bag.
  4. Well, there's a huge distance between Kershaw and Wimmers and that can be filled up with lots of guys. I don't disagree that Wimmers is probably not going to make it but there have been a lot of pitchers who end up having one pretty good season out of nowhere. Before last year, Collin McHugh had a total of 47 ip (w/nearly a 9 ERA and 5k/9 and 2HR/9!). So last year, at 27, he has a huge season and came in 4th in ROY voting. Jacob deGrom won ROY last year at 26.
  5. Yeah, obviously it would be great if he could bounce back. I know most draft guys thought it was an ok pick but the Twins had been so linked to Wimmers that I don't even remember rumors about other guys they were looking at. That said, the 2010 draft doesn't look all that great but, IIRC, it was supposed to be pretty deep but not a lot of good (yet) picks after Sale.
  6. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/walking-through-ben-reveres-19-assists/ Fun article at fangraphs on Revere's 19 career assists. But the most important part is the ending: "If you’re looking for visually-impressive assists, Ben Revere isn’t your man. That’s what you’d expect out of an arm rating of 1. But, he’ll always have the Ryan Roberts play. That was a throw any outfielder could be proud of. And it was probably a better throw than you could make. Don’t lose sight of the fact that you completely suck at baseball. You’re just lucky you never get .giffed."
  7. From a BP chat yesterday - Rick (St Paul): Stephen Gonsavles and Juan De Leon - how much is there with these young pitchers? Jordan Gorosh: Both interesting. Gonzalves is a long, lean 6'5 LHP with the potential for three average pitches or slightly above.
  8. Finding numbers like that isn't that hard. Alexander Smit as a 17 year old in rookie ball: 38 ip, 1.18era 40k. At 19, he struck out 140 in 95 innings between rookie and A ball. Gaby Hernandez put up similar numbers - 52ip, 1.03era, 64k at 18 in rookie and A ball. At 19, he dominated low A and was promoted to A+. Neither guy ever made the majors. And I wasn't hunting for them, I just randomly looked at GCL pitching leaders from 2003 and then 2004. Tons of guys have dominated that level. Did you read the link in my post? It's a good explanation for the different level of pitchers. And pitchers can play above their ranking. Radke was a #3 who had multiple ace level seasons. I really like Gonsalves, I'd rank him ahead of Kepler and think he's the Twins breakout guy this year. But his ceiling is a #3 and it's not crazy to like Kepler more. That's all I'm trying to say.
  9. http://data.whicdn.com/images/22695004/futurama-fry-meme-generator-not-sure-if-i-m-stupid-or-just-tired-098148_large.jpg
  10. I believe his mom was in ballot, not skating. Gonsalves seems to have a #3 ceiling, not a 1 or 2. He might have one plus pitch (and it might not be plus) and is developing other stuff to go with it. That's a #3 starter. And McDaniel, Sickels and Klaw (IIRC) all had Kepler ahead of Gonsalves. (Personally, I had Gonsalves ahead, too).
  11. I guess I mostly quibble with the Walker placement. Until/Unless he fixes his plate discipline, he doesn't project to get out of AA. That's a huge problem. I'd take all the guys in the 15-20 ranking above him right now. Hopefully he destroys AA pitching this year, but right now he is too big a question mark. Love Gonsalves, like many people, and I think he'll be the breakout pitcher this season. Hopefully he can get a solid breaking ball. It'll be interesting to see how Kepler progresses this year. He needs at bats to develop and the Twins have sent him to the AFL twice, so it seems they are still high on him. Big year for him.
  12. The grade isn't for their minor league numbers. A 30 is an indication of what kind of game power Walker would show now, if he was put in the majors. They note that he has big time raw power but to translate that into a game is difficult and they are saying he would have trouble doing that now, if he were in the majors. That makes sense considering his difficulty with A+ pitching.
  13. It's ok. I think McDaniel and Hulet are pretty good at the prospecting stuff. Fun to read their views.
  14. Well, if Mauer isn't hitting well at first, it won't really matter. Plouffe and Sano have third base, so that doesn't work. An offensive-first backup catcher, part time DH isn't a horrible thing to have. Sounds like Antony thought he'd get a couple games a week at catcher and a game at DH. If he's hitting, he'll get 400 at-bats.
  15. They'll have some positive regression too. Continued improvement from some young guys and some depth behind them. I think fangraphs had an article about that a month or so ago and the Twins had the 3rd fewest number of players projected to have a low (sub 1) WAR. One way to improve a lot is to just not have a bunch of negative players on your team. So, ideally, next years team will be improved by not playing Colabello, Kubel, Parm etc. IIRC, a .500 ish team should have about 35 WAR and the Twins were around 30 last year. They can make that kind of jump. If you look at the 2000-2001 Twins, you see that.
  16. Both interviews were pretty good although Antony didn't say anything earth shaking. He does throw a little love at Duffey, who Seth has already mentioned in his top Twins list. So maybe we have even more starter depth than I thought. Which would be good. He expects the team to be around .500, which I think is reasonable.
  17. Yeah, Stauffer is probably 9th or 10th on the starter depth chart.
  18. I really like May and it's nice that his "issues" are mechanical rather than "stuff." Before last season, Jason Parks (then with BP, now with the Cubs) said that May "frustrated the hell" out of him b/c he should have better results with the stuff he had but pitched "small." Klaw said something similar. And then May just had a great season in AAA and seemingly tweaked his mechanics. He could be really fun to watch this year. He was my pick to lead the team in strike outs.
  19. The first number is the present grade. IE - if they were put in the majors today, that's how they'd hit. And that's probably right - Rosario had trouble hitting in AA and he was the most advanced. None of those guys, today, would be able to hit in the majors. The second number is the projected ability to hit in the future - ie, when they are settled into the majors.
  20. Realistically, there probably wouldn't be much of a difference. HS kids that are drafted only play short, CF, catcher or pitcher. Very few play elsewhere. They get moved to the corners by the orgs. But if they are good enough to get drafted, they are so much better than the other kids they play with that they'll play those important positions. IIRC, even Billy Butler played short at his high school
  21. Well, ESPN and mlb.com both had him in their top 40ish prospects so, yeah, if the draft was redone he'd probably stay in the top 5 again.
  22. Rosario - E Turner - D Walker - A Kepler - B Harrison - C
  23. Is this a serious question? Sometimes internet humor misses me.
  24. I remember some of those discussions. Turner was seen as a "safe" pick, like Michael and most people really didn't want him. Beede scared the crap out of me with his control. I didn't want him at all. I don't remember much discussion about Conforto. Jackson had a bunch of support. (I think the Twins were also linked to Newcomb and Finnegan). I think I probably had Gordon first, Jackson second, Troussant third, IIRC.
