  1. He's an interesting prospect. Some prospect guys are a little low on him while others remain very high. Baseball America doesn't have him ranked in their top 100 and Sickels had him at #105 but mlb.com and BP have him at #36 and 28, respectively. Klaw said the Twins were doing a great job of developing him from a thrower into a pitcher (and I think he was in Klaw's top 100, as well). Obviously, injuries are always a concern but, if he's healthy, I do think he could be a fast mover once everything "clicks" for him. He certainly seems to have the front of the rotation mentality that I wish all of our guys had.
  2. Has Ryan let a potential FA just walk away since he got back? I guess he's let a few guys go (Casilla, Marquis, Parm). He's traded (at the deadline and beyond it) Hammer, Morales, Butera, Carroll, Correa, Morneau, Liriano. You could make a case that he should trade guys like Dozier or Perkins (like he did with Span and Revere), instead of having them under contract for the next nucleus but I do think he's done a decent job of trading away the parts that he's decided won't be part of the future clubs.
  3. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/sunday-notes-grichuks-barrel-kohl-stewarts-moxie-opening-day-arrives/ Interesting article on fangraphs. They say that Stewart is throwing both a curve and a slider b/c he seems to have them both and they haven't (at least not yet) merged into one "slurve" like pitch. "The introduction of Uncle Charlie is somewhat curious, as many pitchers are limited to one breaking pitch in the early stages of their development. Youngsters who throw both a curveball and slider are frequently told to put one in their back pocket. The Twins opted to have him add rather than subtract. “It depends on the guy, and whether those pitches are defined,” explained Rasmussen. “When they start bleeding into each other, which they usually do, you have to make a choice. Otherwise you end up having two crappy breaking balls that look the same. But if one is a slider and one is a curveball, which is the case with Kohl, then they’re OK.”" Stewart seems pretty confident in his abilities and sure of himself, in a good way. Hopefully, he has a big year for the Twins and moves up the ladder like Berrios did last year.
  4. I assume he's the LOOGY and Molitor wanted him over Theilbar.
  5. Well, it's baseball season so even if the Twins are bad, it's baseball season. It's the only sport I care about anymore. I think the Twins can be a .500 team but a lot will ride on Nolasco and Mauer rebounding and the continued improvement of guys like Arcia and Gibson. And I'm extremely anxious for Meyer to debut. I'm also very excited about the prospects - especially the ones we have at AA and above. Guys like Harrison and Walker could have breakout seasons for us to go along with the high number of impact prospects.
  6. Fun game Buxton Michael Polanco Sano Walker Harrison Gonzalez Kepler Turner
  7. If this is right, that Chattanooga roster is going to be really, really fun to watch. With the exception of Hicks/Gonzalez at 1B (and Kepler will get some time there) every expected starter is a big time prospect or a strong sleeper prospect. Not a lot of chaff on that roster.
  8. I'd rather root for Hamilton over ownership, every day of the week.
  9. Computer went wonky on me. Meant to say that my guess was that the Pohlads were more into these FA signings than Ryan was so they are the ones who would have to change their minds. I think Ryan is much more comfortable with Correa and Pelfrey like signings.
  10. My guess is that it's more the Pohlads than Ryan.
  11. Wow, it got worse. Angels are really hammering Hamilton - not even the Yankees attacked ARod this badly. Rosenthal is strongly suggesting that all the leaks in this matter - which made Hamilton look really bad - came from the Angels in the hope that he'd either get kicked out of baseball or leave voluntarily. http://deadspin.com/the-angels-dont-want-josh-hamilton-back-1695524055
  12. Wow, didn't see that coming. Pelfrey over May/Meyer is sorta defensible but Thompson was a real surprise. Is he a LOOGY or supposed to be more than that?
  13. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/116166112/no-penalties-for-josh-hamilton-arbitrator-rules I'm actually happy about this and I hope he gets his life in order. The arbitrator ruled that Hamilton's drug use didn't violate the agreement in place with MLB. And it's also a nice reminder of how much stronger MLB player's union is over their NFL counterpart. Good for baseball.
  14. At the end of the day, the GM can overrule the manager. Gardy and Ryan, at least on their first run, were pretty in sync on most matters. I remember a Reusse article that Gardy and Smith didn't always see eye-to-eye on roster make up and Smith put certain players over his objections. (Brenden Harris, IIRC, was one of the guys Smith wanted more playing time for). Obviously, you want a good relationship and my guess is that Ryan will try and make Molitor happy but would overrule him if he needs to.
  15. Clearly, it's Gardy's fault.
  16. Damn. I was hoping the draft was strong and instead it's getting weaker.
  17. Wasn't Antony the one who quashed the Meyer bullpen pleas last year b/c Ryan was getting treatment for cancer? I still hope that Meyer is a starter long term but, if not, the team should use him as a big weapon out of the pen as soon as they can.
  18. 1) Perkins, Fein, Graham, Boyer. 2) Tonkin gets first crack but Burdi and Reed are the two important ones. Also, Meyer could be a bullpen guy first. 3) Interesting idea but it won't happen with the Twins.
  19. Yeah, this sounds about right. And Molitor might use the pen a bit differently than Gardy, so we'll see.
  20. Yeah, I thought the theory was that a good team could overperfrom it's pyth b/c of a bad bullpen b/c the bad pen would be used in blowouts to drive up the runs against. IIRC, fans of a team a few years ago was making that claim but I can't remember who it was now. Maybe the Reds or someone like that.
  21. A bit surprised by the Dodgers ranking, although Hector Olivera sure added something to their system.
  22. I get what you're saying and I'm not trying to belittle it or ignore it. Letting Duensing go and putting Thielbar on the roster would have been fine with me. But I don't see it as a huge issue - as of now - either. Tonkin, Acter, Pressley are just as fungible in the grand scheme. They could have spent more in FA. Robertson got 4/46m, Rome 2/15, KRod 2/13, Duke 3/15 etc. But big contracts to FA pitchers seems iffy, esp if Burdi, Meyer, Reed are in the bullpen in July. I would guess that no one thought the 2013 bullpen (Perkins, Roenicke, Fien, Duensing, Pressly, Swarzak) would be an asset and yet it was. Relief pitchers and bullpens are so volatile, year to year, that this pen could be fine. And, if not, then they have easily replaceable parts.
  23. There is so I disagree with in this post, it's not really worth getting into. But I would point out that they had a 75 win team by pyth w/l last year so you seem to be expecting a significantly worse team than last year. Let's hope you're wrong.
  24. Probably depends on the stat you use. I think if you use fWAR for it, then it might be right. If you use era or opponent OPS, than no. On the other hand, if you use fWAR, then Ryan's bullpens have usually been top of the line (#2 in fWAR from 1999-2007). And again, does this mean you favor going after Soriano or signing a FA reliever to a 3 year deal, like Gregerson? I don't really see much, if any, better upside with guys like Tonkin and Achter at this point. If Burdi or Reed were being held back, that would be something different.
  25. Good for him, I hope he does well.
