  1. I really don't like coloring him with the BS years - you don't want to credit him for signing Sano, as well. I do think he stayed away from the GM duties while Smith was in charge. As to the question of how long, I think it depends on how you feel a rebuild should take. I used Lunhow as an example b/c we generally aren't personally invested in the Astros so it's maybe easier to compare. The situations aren't the same but they are similar enough that I think if you think Lunhow deserves more time, then you should think Ryan does as well. Both teams achieved surprising success last year. Lunhow went all in to get his proven closer while Ryan didn't do much (and many national writers thought that was the right move since the Twins were bound to regress while the young players accumulated to the majors).
  2. Do you think the 40 man is bad? I think it's young and inexperienced but I like the potential.
  3. OK. Fine, and that's your opinion so you can have it. But I do think that's a bit underselling Ryan and whatnot. I disagree - obviously. I think Ryan and Lunhow have both been at the helm for the last "few years" and should be given time to see things through.
  4. The internet is a fun place. You get to be snarky for free. Not a lot of restrictions. If you post too much crazy crap, you can just wash it away with a new username. That said, you understood exactly what constraints we were talking about. You read major league ready's post so you knew what the parameters of the discussion were. You choose to misread or misinterpret on purpose. It's already a loaded topic so why fan things worse with petty stuff like that? You could have ignored the discussion or started your own. Couldn't you have just said, "I don't care about the payroll constraints before TF opened." (There are flaws in that as well but at least you'd be on point). Instead you write an offbeat opinion that has nothing to do with MLR's post and expect it to be looked at seriously?
  5. Well, actually, that's not true. The Astros have the worst record. And I think that's a pretty good comparison. Do you think Lunhow should be fired by Houston? After all, they were already in 4 years of rebuild when he got there. He traded away a lot of minor league talent for a proven closer, Gomez and Gattis. I suspect you think he should get more time. I think Ryan's in the same boat. Up until this season, I thought the rebuild was on schedule. This year has been a disaster but is the nucleus really that bad? And I think it does make sense to compare how Ryan has done in his job by looking at all the constraints he has had. We might not like that the Pohlad family was generally cheap but it was the reality.
  6. Agreed. But he's a solid bat and is just scuffling this year.
  7. Ahh, then we are discussing different things.
  8. Yeah, I think that was the central point.
  9. Nice. Of those numbers, I'm most surprised by Heyward.
  10. Actually, the rip used to be that they never hung onto their guys ...
  11. Sure, they could. And I tend to think most of the problems of this years team are not on Ryan. But the issue - as I understand it - isn't whether Ryan should go or shouldn't go. The issue seems to be that some people think the Pohlad family THINKS Ryan should go but won't get rid of him unless the Pohlads meet some of Ryan's demands. I think that's ludicrous.
  12. http://www.startribune.com/with-perkins-and-hughes-where-is-the-sense-of-urgency/380440381/ Pretty rough stuff. "You didn’t have to work hard to hear complaints about both of them in the Twins clubhouse and throughout the organization. There were times a player would talk about teammates willingly playing hurt while glaring across the clubhouse at Perkins." Souhan does acknowledge that the players might be more hurt than we know but both came into camp out of shape and neither has required surgery for their ailments. "Members of the Twins organization have told me that there were key figures with the team who wanted to trade Perkins this winter, and that there is one key figure who questions whether Perkins will pitch again this season. The latter is probably more indicative of the pessimism Perkins has inspired in the organization than a reflection of reality." I usually think when a local writer writes something like this the team has given it's tacit approval to do so.
  13. Owners have said that a hundred times and made changes. And the counter of that is that Ryan has said that he doesn't believe he has that security. If the Pohlad family decides that Ryan has to leave - which they might not - they'll move on. They aren't going to decide that they need a new guy and run it by Ryan to get his permission. Now, they could very well believe that Ryan is the right guy for the job and keep him but that's a different discussion.
  14. There's a bit too much conspiracy theory in there for me. First, I very much doubt Ryan can give the Pohlad's ultimatums like the one you are suggesting and even if he could it is even less likely that the Pohlad's would listen to it. I'm sure the Pohlad family (quite rightly) respects Ryan and would prefer not to embarrass him but that's a bit different from saying they will let him set the terms of his firing - if that's what the owners decide. My guess is, if they do want him to leave, they'll tell him at the end of the year that they are sorry it didn't work out but they need to go another way, they'd love for him to step down but if he doesn't they'll fire him. They might offer him another position in the org but the new GM/guy in charge would be X (Reusse hinted that the Twins would try and bring in Hoyer). Secondly, I think a little too much has been made about the lack of turnover. Nearly the entire minor league and major league coaching staffs have been changed since Ryan took over. A new farm director - a very young one - was installed. An analytical group was created. Ryan also raided other orgs for scouting guys. It is true that some people have been with the org for decades - which isn't necessarily a bad thing - but Radcliff or Krivisky aren't going to stop a change from being made, if the owners decide to make one. Other people that have been with the org for many years like St Peter have no impact on the baseball field.
  15. I think the article was a bit rushed and ignored some changes but I do think, like Reusse, that Ryan will be gone at the end of the year. When Ryan came back, he changed a lot of the minor league development people, including installing Brad Steil as farm director, and minor league coaches. I think Steil's done a very good job in both developing talent and pushing it up the system in his short time here. Obviously, it's easy when you have talent like Buxton and Sano in your system but we've also seen "lesser" prospects pushed and making big leaps on prospect lists. I wouldn't want him to leave.
  16. Didn't the book hint that his father heard him once? And Theon might have heard Bran through a Weirwood tree, too. How the White Walkers were created was a pretty big reveal - want to bet the first sacrifice was a Stark ancestor? I'm a little surprised by the sudden end of the three-eyed crow, I figured he'd be more important but maybe they need to move forward. Anyhow, Hodor's reveal was good - I'm glad he went out a hero.
  17. Say what you want, he held that door.
  18. Ouch, that's rough. Sorry.
  19. Very nice. Of all those names, only Curbelo - #98 makes mlb.com's list (which doesn't mean they won't be good players or the Twins shouldn't be looking at them). Curbelo is likely a future third baseman.
  20. New mock out by Mayo - http://m.mlb.com/news/article/179142756/aj-puk-at-no-1-in-latest-mlb-mock-draft?topicid=151437456 Has them taking Ian Anderson but also notes what the Twins are (apparently) thinking with the pick - "Minnesota is on all of the top-tier high school right-handers." So it sounds like we will be taking one of the big arms, just depends on who is there.
  21. minor league ball put out their mock today and had the Twins taking Forrest Whitley - http://www.minorleagueball.com/2016/5/20/11717354/2016-mlb-mock-draft-lewis-groome-puk-pint "Minnesota doesn't have any real strong tendencies in the first round. They do lean high school, and arms more than bats. The best available prep arm is Forrest Whitley. Whitley is a giant of a man-child at 6-7, 230. Unlike most big guys, his mechanics are fairly clean and repeatable, leading to a mid-90s fastball. If they decide to go a different direction, Josh Lowe is still there. Or they could go after a different prep arm, like Joey Wentz, the last tier two prep pitcher available." I'm opposed to drafting someone named Forrest.
  22. I agree but he's also been yanked in and out of the line-up a lot. Molitor didn't even start him until the 5th game and his next start was the 8th game. Benched again. Then he started 6 games in a row (.968 OPS, 30% krate). Benched for two games, one start, benched again, then given 5 starts in a row (.650 OPS 55% krate). Benched again for a few games. Then given 5 starts (.917 OPS, 20% krate), benched, spot start, bench, spot start, benched for a couple games, pinch hit attempt, bench .... He has a big strike out night, Molitor benches him for several games. That's not helping him. He's never going to be a low strike out guy but he's increased his walk rate and clearly has made efforts to improve his game. He's a former top prospect, still young and has real power. The Twins should be giving him a real chance and not yanking him in and out of the line-up. If for no other reason to determine what he might become and/or see if they can increase his trade value. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-george-springer-who-isnt-george-springer/
  23. Honestly, so much has gone wrong so far this season that I think you'll just have to see how it shakes out before planning for 2017. I suspect the Twins will trade off a few guys - although it would help if they started hitting first. And our panic about next year might subside if Kepler, Sano and Buxton show signs of hitting like they are capable of in the majors.
  24. I think Kepler and Buxton should both stay in AAA until after the all-star break. Combined, they have about 250 PA in AAA. Let them (and Rosario) hit without pressure, take good at bats and we can see where they are in a bit. Meanwhile, perhaps Arcia or Grossman (both former top 100 prospects) can get hot with consistent playing time (assuming they get it) and may increase their trade value.
  25. I'm not sure where this goes but it goes somewhere. I'm also not sure what it tell us. Brad Radke was drafted in the 8th round of the 1991 draft. 4 players drafted in the 8th round in 1991 amassed more than 25 career WAR (Radke, Derek Lowe, Jason Schmidt and Steve Trachsel). Only four players total in rounds 1-7 reached the 25 WAR total in their careers (and that's only if you count Nomar, who didn't sign and was redrafted in 1994).
