  1. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/06/dodgers-designate-carl-crawford-for-assignment.html Crawford is still owed 43.5 after this season but is probably done. I always thought he was a bit overrated because he was an exciting player - lots of triples and stolen bases. He signed a huge deal with Boston (7/142) but it didn't really work out. Boston was able to dump him on LA.
  2. I think tonight's episode was probably the weakest of the season - part of that is that I just don't think the actress playing Margaery Tyrell is very good and giving her scenes with much more accomplished actors like Pryce and Diana Rigg just makes it worse. But the scenes in the North seem like we're more or less just waiting for the big battle (which we are) but nothing is really happening. Nice to see the Hound again but that was about the one bright spot.
  3. I don't have any problem with trading Plouffe but I have some doubts about whether Sano can play it. I think the claims that Sano is less likely to get hurt at third (or to be better defensively) are a bit thin (esp since he got hurt running the bases, not in the field). On the other hand, with an OF of Grossman/Buxton/Kepler looking solid, maybe the Twins do want to give it a shot (and I do think Polanco could play it pretty well in the majors, if Sano can't).
  4. I think that's one of the things that the Twins and Boras might hammer out in the off-season (or, perhaps, sooner).
  5. I wonder how many HS kids are demanding over slot bonuses? At a certain point, not all these guys are top 10 talents, but are more than 10 (for instance) expecting top 10 dollars?
  6. I think there is probably more to this than is being reported but I don't know what is going on, so I'll just hope that Meyer gets another chance in the ML rotation soon.
  7. Well, none of that is good news.
  8. I think a lot of that depends on how Sano can handle third. I think the offense is hurt by a new position thing is overstated. Sano can hit and is on pace for about a 3 fWAR season, prior to his injury.
  9. I have no idea who either of them are - neither makes mlbpipeline's top 30 Mets but both could be having break out seasons and should be considered top 30 guys. I'm just not sure. Last year, the A's took a few guys from the Astros that were ranked low but having breakout seasons. I'm just not in a position to judge.
  10. Mets blogs are at least considering Plouffe. I think Plouffe just needs to hit well and stay healthy for a few weeks to show that he's not cooked. I suspect most teams have an idea of what he is but probably want to make sure he's healthy and good to go. I do think the Twins will trade him (and a few others) before the deadline.
  11. In fairness, Ryan would very likely look to get a player in A+ or lower, with upside. That's what he has usually done. And I think the Mets - who are in win-now mode - would be willing to lose an A ball player or two. I don't know much about the Mets system or how the Mets view Plouffe (or Nunez) to know who to target but I'd bet it's a guy in the low minors.
  12. Well, it seems like the goalposts keep being moved. I believe the concern was that Ryan doesn't trade anyone until their team control was nearly done. Well, no, that's quite clearly not true. Now you want to look at only players moved that had team control and were starters? Fine, Knobby, AJ, Dougie, Walker, Span, Revere, Keilty, Redmond, Lohse, Slowey. Again, probably not a complete list. I guess I'm just not seeing the concern. Ryan's record shows he'll trade away a guy at any time. I think the Twins hung onto Plouffe b/c they thought they'd be in contention this year and playing with him at third and Sano in right gave them a better chance. He's struggling a bit but he's been a solid player the last few years. He's probably not cooked at this point. mlbtraderumors had him in their top 10 list of trade players.
  13. Well, sure. Not all those trades worked out - and some that did aren't included. But I do think Ryan's track record shows that he'll move a player instead of getting nothing back for him. So at the end of the day, I think it's very unlikely that Plouffe is non-tendered.
  14. Yeah, I think that's the big issue. If Sano can't play third, it doesn't really matter. My thought during the off season was that the Twins sent Sano to winterball to get a better idea of his ability to play third. They did that and proclaimed him a RFer. I do think it makes sense to trade Plouffe now, however. It's a lost year. We can put Sano at third and see if he can fight it to a draw.
  15. Sure. Aggie, Gutherie, Mahomes, Walbeck, Becker, Redman, Buchanan, Kinney, Kielty, Padilla, Lohse all had over a full season of control left. Guys like Mohr, Milton, Romero all had a full year. Neither of those are complete lists.
  16. I think it's fine to keep Palka in AA. 1) It's his first taste of the league. 2) It's only been about 40 games. 3) The Twins (and many teams) generally consider AA a step away from the majors anyway and 4) wouldn't he cut into Rosario and Walker's playing time in AAA? I assume Rosario is in a corner and Schafer was signed to play center.
  17. I don't necessarily disagree but this is a draft of suspect quality. A guy #15 on one list might be #29 on someone else's list. I think it makes more sense to know what it will cost to get the guy at 15 so you can factor in your pool for the rest of the draft. If #15 is a tough sign or won't sign, you won't be able to play around with other picks after round 10. Last year, for example, the Twins expected to save some money on Kyle Cody but he didn't sign so they weren't able to sign one or two HS guys they picked late. I think the Twins should find a guy who is willing to sign at 15 for something the team is ok with.
  18. Grossman could be ok. He was part of a big trade from Houston to Pitt so I'm not sure it's fair to say that Pitt let him walk. Houston burned his three option years but only avg a little over 250 at-bat each season. He had an opt out against Cleveland so he left them. His minor league numbers have always been solid and he was a top 100 prospect several times. He's not a future all-star but he could be a solid OFer for a good team.
  19. If you recall, Jones was going to be moved but Kubel tore up his knee in the AFL. But the rip on Ryan used to be that he didn't hang onto his players. He'd let some go via FA if he got a supp pick (Koskie, Everyday Eddie, Hawkins, Guzman, Jones) but he traded a lot of guys before their team controlled time was up if he could get a good deal. And since he's come back, he's done the same. If the Twins think that Plouffe won't be back next year, they'll trade him. They won't non-tender him in the offseason.
  20. A trade to the Mets makes a lot of sense - they have no one to play third right now and also lost their 1Bman. We might have to eat salary but they should be looking for help. (Maybe they'd be happier with Nunez).
  21. mlbpipeline did a bunch of updates today. First, a new mock which has the Twins taking a HS bat! "15. Twins: Alex Kirilloff, OF, Plum HS (Pittsburgh). Another team that covets Garrett, Minnesota likely will wind up opting for a hitter over a college arm. Kirilloff projects as the best bat available if the Draft plays out this way." Interesting. I hadn't seen the Twins linked to a HS bat before but Callis is plugged in pretty well. mlbpipeline also updated their top 200 for draft day - http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2016?list=draft
  22. Nice write up. Seems like we'll probably draft one of those guys or maybe a college arm like Hudson if he's available. Of the group, I'd probably prefer Anderson but, really, any of them would be fine.
  23. Kind of a lost year for Gibson.
  24. I thought I read somewhere that the cost of wooden bats is the reason the colleges won't go to them. For all the money they'll put into football, baseball doesn't get much - it's not a good revenue sport. So metal bats save the teams several thousands of dollars each year.
